This place came highly recommended by embassy personnel. Not that I hold any angst in general against this specific member of the diplomatic body, but in general they are the ones that know the least about local customs, culture and procedures as they live in a shielded environment with an overpaid service organization to fix all the retarded interactions you have on location.

Anyway, Azul Historico, in the center of Mexico City, turned out to be the worst or the worst on earth. We managed to order some food after some guess work by the waiter about what they actually had. Ten minutes into the cooking process he came back for the switch request. They had run out of some processed fish apparently.

After gobbling down their junk it was time to pay. Apparently their credit card system was down so none of the two US cards, nor one British card worked. The crazy manager accused us of being at fault. I quickly asked him if he was completely out of his mind. Obviously the problem was on their end. The manager insisted after some phone calls to his bank that we would have to call our banks in the US and Europe to fix the problem. They decided to keep us hostage in the restaurant since we were unable to pay. Finally we went upstairs to a separate bar and got some drinks we paid for with a credit card without any problem. The manager came upstairs and asked the owner of the tequila lounge if we could pay there instead, all while one of his security guards was making sure we could not escape. After 15 minutes we went downstairs again and the payment worked just fine.

The worst dining experience of my life!

Make no mistake this is a high end Mexican restaurant but for very reasonable prices. We had a supurb meal, wonderful service, great ambiance. Arrived lateish on a Saturday night (not that easy to find but worth looking for) without a reservation and waited half an hour for a table. The setting is in the interior courtyard of a classy hotel. Very busy - a tier of galleries and shops up above. I had as good a margarita as I've ever had anywhere, and we shared an appetizer of guacamole, with ground up grasshopers on the side. Weird but tasty. We then both opted for fish dishes - I had the Red Snapper Vera Cruz which was excellent. Very attentive service throughout. Highly recommended. I think we were the only "gringos" in the place.

The restaurant is in a beautiful courtyard, but on the evening we visited there was a noisy party in the bar above, with a constant stream of party goers/drunken tourists passing by our table on the way up to the bar. Dreadful. Two of our mains arrived, a duck dish, and were incredibly tough. We spoke with the waiter who tried to convince us that the problem was our expectations were wrong, and that in Mexico duck is preferred tough. Rediculous and arrogant, particularly when three of our party were Mexican! Whilst the tough mains were eventually replaced with something else, this meant we did not all eat together, ruining our meal out. Injury was added to insult when we received no apology and no money off our expensive meal. All in all this was a terrible restaurant, interested just in making money. Avoid at all costs.

Having been for lunch at Padrino's, an Italian Mexican restaurant also located in the trendy new Downtown Hotel, we decided to return to the hotel to have dinner at Azul Historico. Located in the central courtyard of the hotel, Azul Historico was very busy and clearly popular with the locals. Although it has a very cool vibe the menu is traditional. We started with the "soap de tortilla Oaxaquena", which had a little kick to it from the chipotle, and the pear and roquefort salad ( a departure from Mexican fare). For our main we shared the "cochinita pibil", a slow roasted pork dish. This dish was very good and the portion generous. The margaritas which are served at Azul Historico are as good as they get. After dinner we ventured upstairs to the Downtown Hotel's rooftop bar. With its views of the old Casino across the street and the other surrounding buildings, this bar was extremely crowded and very lively. All and all we had a fun and enjoyable night in the centro historico.

Azul Historica was recommended by a Mexican friend.

Initially not easy to find as there are no signs anywhere from the main pedestrian walk way.

However once there it is very much like an oasis in the concrete jungle of Mexico City.

High stemmed trees with manicured leafy canopy tops create a superb tranquil setting below.
The menu is superb choice of classic Mexican food including the "Mollo".
Steer away from the meat steaks as I discovered the kitchen has no idea how to do a steak medium to rare. I was informed that Mexican steaks is a delicacy. The meat cut was too thin and not what I expected. Tasteless!. However all other patrons of our group had wonderful meals. Excellent service. Menu is expensive.
On the second level there are numerous craft shops but not the usual tourist stuff. These are more on the high end and good artistic quality.
