Sanborns, the Mexican chain of restaurants/shops/pharmacies dates from the beginning of the 20th century and the food is standard, middle of the road, Mexican cuisine. This restaurant is no different in that regard but it is special because of its location (close to the Centro Antico) and the 18th Century building that houses it (Casa de los Azulejos, house of tiles). The stories we were told about it, pretty much match what Wikipedia says. As well as the Puebla tiles outside the murals in side include one my Orozco. It's a wonderful and very atmospheric location.

The original Sanborns is in an old building covered entirely by antique Mexican tiles in the Zocalo- Centro Historico of Mexico City.
Really high ceiling, gigantic chandeliers and big windows are a reminder of a time when horse carriages brought coiffered ladies to the cafe doors for high tea.
This particular branch has older patrons who are quick to tell me I must hold on to my camera or it will disappear.
The seating is curious but very efficient- a serpentine table with little booths for the waitresses who will come and take your order. Have the chocolate frio and the cold coffee.
You can order delicious old world pastries from the patisserie in the adjacent room or eat a bigger meal at the marble counter. Tea and coffee is served in beautiful blue and white tea cups and the service is very friendly. A great place to stop as you walk through the crowded streets near the Palaces of Fine Arts. You can also shop for gourmet foods and othe goods on the second floor.

This Sanborn's restaurant is located inside the Blue Tile building. The restaurant is in a courtyard around a Moorish style fountain. Mexican food is served here and is really good. This is a must see while you are in the historic center.
