Went with a friend, were looking for some spanish food and wine. We were disappointed in the food- the paella was over seasoned and just put together. Our waiter was very good, but we felt watched, the lighting is very bright and he upsold us on the wine. The menu is too large and the restaurant needs some updating- even if it is an icon.

An icon for many decades, Centro Castellano continues to be a safe bet in that part of downtown. Service was attentive, no complaints. Food was miss or hit. Croquetas de Jamón were just average (less mashed potatoes and more meat guys!). Their huachinango al perejil (Red Snapper - house specialty) was tasty and well cooked but the vegetables looked looked like they were frozen from a 2009 vintage.. tasteless and looked appropriate for a "still life" Velázquez painting... Their prices are generous, they could charge less and reward their loyal customers with a better price to quality ratio!

For me Centro Castellano is the total dining package: Good food and good atmosphere - though it doesn't really look like it from the outside!

The interior is deceptively large and antique, complete with grand stone staircase, traditional oven and replete with knick-knacks from times gone by. Though the restaurant was busy (Sunday lunchtime), service was both friendly and efficient.

The food isn't bad either. The starters and main dishes, a throwback to Spanish colonialism, were delicious. Beware though; the portion of paella is huge. By the time the mariachis had been round, we'd also polished off a few fine desserts too, all home made. However, it's worth avoiding ordering the cake made with suger substitute Splenda - even if you're counting the calories. We'd washed it all down with a tasty, not to mention strong, Clericot (form of sangria).

Of course the total package comes with a bill a bit on the high side, but no too hefty given the experience. A good time had by all.

My wife and I got into Mexico City late Saturday evening and wanted something close to our hotel in the Centro Historico. The front desk folks named this one among a few other options and I was intrigued by the name and the opportunity to try some authentic Spanish cuisine. We walked the couple of blocks and were seated immediately. As is typical of restaurants in the DF the walls were covered with photos of the owners posing with celebrity guests. The decor transports you to the Spanish countryside and the menu has something for almost everyone. My "house specialty" red snapper was okay but not the best I've had in Mexico. My wife didn't fare much better with her steak. So don't go for the food - go for the atmosphere. There may be other menu items that they do better. I'll go back but I don't think my wife will!
