This is the most fabulous cathedral in Mexico, located smack-dab on the site of Moctezuma's Throne Room in ancient Tenochtitlan. The tons of gold and jewels bedecking the walls are just unforgettable. This place is so ANCIENT and SPECTACULAR. Don't miss it. Also, check out the old Mexican guys selling prints of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, the Beatles, Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata at the front gate to the cathedral. The photos are CLASSICS, and they are only 10 PESOS APIECE (about 80 cents). What a deal!

This is a beautiful and interesting building. Wonder around and admire the devotion and commitment in Mexico. Wonder at how the building stays together as bits of it sink into the ground!

If you only have one day to spend in Mexico City, be sure to include a visit to the Metropolitan Cathedral. Absolutely stunning, breath-taking architecture inside and out. Located in a safe area near other beautiful things: all the buildings in the Zocalo square, the Templo Mayor, and 10 minutes walk from the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
One thing to watch out for--a few of the times that I've come here I've ran into what I will call "tourist-hijackers." Now, they're harmless, so don't worry there, but it's become a bit of a nuisance for me. Sometimes a person will approach you, tell you a little bit about the building you are looking at, and then offer to give you a free tour. If you agree, you will have a hard time getting away, which is really annoying if you are on a time-schedule and some person won't leave you alone. My advice is to try politely declining the tour, and if they persist, then insist (a little less politely) that you don't want the tour and walk away. You're not going to hurt anybody's feelings. Enjoy your vacation, and don't let "tourist-hijackers" take away from your precious vacation time. (If you really want a tour explaining the history, there are many free group-tours offered. These are better, because you can break away according to your own time schedule.)

If you like Catholic iconography - this is a gold mine! Pay for the tour to see Juan Diego's bell at the top of the bell tower.
The tours are very cheap.
