My husband and I stayed at the Grand Hotel de la Ciudad de México in August 2019, and we couldn't have wished for a better experience.
The hotel itself is beautiful. A real architectural jewel from the turn of the 20th century. The hotel's ceiling it an impressive Tiffany style stained glass dome. I had never seen anything so beautiful. The hotel's art nouveau style makes you feel like you walked into a luxury hotel in Paris sometime in in the 1800's.
The rooms (60 in total) are finely decorated. Not super pretentious, but very classic. The four post beds have canopies and, they are also very comfortable. The bathroom is elegant and spacious with a full size tub and french style mirrors. They even give you complimentary slippers embroidered with the name of hotel.
The hotel's location is prime. Right across from the Plaza de la Constitución, or Zócalo, the National Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral. From here you can walk anywhere in the Centro Histórico (Historic Downtown). Although the hotel is in the middle of the action, the rooms are very quiet,
The hotel has two restaurants and one bar. the Terraza restaurant on the fourth floor offers a magnificent view of the Plaza and live feed cameras so you will never miss any of the action at the Zócalo. The food at both restaurants is very good and the margaritas are just delicious. The restaurant on the first floor offers a very nice breakfast buffet, and the Terraza has a huge salad bar included with all meals. However the portions of the regular meals are so large, that you will not want to waste your time with salads. They also prepare your customized Mexican salsa table side. You get to choose between a green or red salsa, the level of spiciness, and the type of chiles you would like to have in your salsa. Then the whole thing is ground in a traditional molcajete (stone mortar) table side. On our last dinner at the Terraza, I ordered a 1/2 kilogram rib eye, which was also cooked table side, seasoned with grasshopper salt and habanero sauce. Delicious!
Although the hotel itself is wonderful, the best thing about our stay was the service. Everyone here goes above and beyond to provide the best service and make you you have an unforgettable stay.
As soon as we arrived we were greeted at the front desk with glasses of complimentary champagne. Later in the day, when we returned to our room after sightseeing we found a nice plate of chocolate covered strawberries and other desserts, including my name written with chocolate syrup on the plate. A few days later it was my birthday, and most of the hotel staff congratulated me, played Las Mañanitas for me (Mexican birthday song), and, once again was surprised by a tray of desserts, a big slice of cake and a greeting card in my room.
Altogether, everyone at Gran Hotel made sure we had the best stay possible, from Gabriela at the front desk, finding us the best room within out rate, Manuel the Concierge finding us the best seats to Mexico's Folkloric Ballet, Victor Hugo, the Bell Boy who gave us a very interesting historical tour of the hotel, Victor Manuel, our housekeeper who made sure our room was always impeccable, Salvador, the super nice Bell Boy that offered himself to carry our luggage a full block to the spot where we were taking our Uber to the airport, to Alejandro, the young and polite security guard that greeted us with a great smile every time we walked through the lobby. We thank you all for making our first visit to Mexico City an unforgettable one.
