“Great stay in the middle of the old town”
Reviewed February 11, 2014

A great hotel if you like to stay in the middle of the old town for an affordable price. Amazing 1900s architecture. Although the interior and hotel facilities are not 5 star one feels like in a 5 star hotel because of the lovely service, the historical surroundings and the splendid interior design. The rooms are large, clean an comfortable. Definitely worth the price.

Thank you for your comments; those are extremely important to us. We are located in the Historic Center, which has many buildings that date back to the colonial era, so as you kindly mentioned our architectonical style keeps that essence, we have uniquely-designed rooms that will enrapture you back to the warm environment of ancient Mexico, with the luxury and comfort of modern life as well as a wonderful service that all my colleagues will offer you before, during and after your stay. For us will be a pleasure to receive you very soon.

The Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is perfectly located for seeing Mexico City's historic attractions. It has old-world charm and elegance with all the modern conveniences. The staff is professional and warm and welcoming. I wrote to them several times ahead of our visit to request restaurant reservations and an airport pick-up. Everything was handled perfectly, including a reservation at a restaurant that does not take reservations. They really go out of their way to make you feel welcome and well-cared for.

Gorgeous historic hotel with a superb maintained facade & lobby area.
Excellent location close to Zocalo & old city centre.
The suite room was lovely & spacious with the period furnishings to set the scene of opulence.
Lovely restaurant with attentive service & great views to match.
However, for the weekend stay, the room suffers from noise issues from adjoining parties well into the early hours.
Another minor though notable issue was when requesting for a taxi, a hotel car is sent as a default & the driver got lost & had no knowledge of the nearby prominent hotels address within close proximity which was an annoyance.

We appreciate your review. As you mentioned we have uniquely-designed rooms that will enrapture you back to the warm environment of ancient Mexico, with the luxury and comfort of modern life. This external company we work with also works with several hotels in the area so the drivers usually know the surroundings and popular spots very well. Maybe they count with new colleagues, which we assure you we will carefully revise. We hope that you consider giving us the opportunity to receive you again, we trust that you will dearly enjoy our Internal view rooms.

This hotel lived up to its reputation from the fabulous glass ceiling and old elevators to the large well furnished rooms. We stayed in the master suite which had plenty of space and clean with great views over the Zocalo. Be prepared if staying in the rooms overlooking the Zocalo that you can experience noise. We stayed over Christmas and noise did not bother us despite the Zocalo being turned into an ice rink with generators running day and night.

The hotel staff were really helpful including the bell boys and porters. Enrique on the front desk deserves a mention for being particularly helpful.

Breakfasts were OK, we used the roof terrace restaurant for an evening meal, mainly to enjoy the fabulous views across the square. The buffet on offer was of reasonable standard. One of the big plus points of the hotel is the location with easy access to the historical buildings, shopping etc. The street outside the hotel has been recently pedestrianized but the hotel ensure they have staff on the corner of the square to greet guests arriving by taxi. We would definitely stay at the hotel again

I was at the place, very beautiful indeed, Arriving in great expectations, departed offended and heartbroken: Located right in front of the Zocalo, upon arrival and after falling in love with the stained glass ceiling, they took my PLATINUN VISA CARD, and requested 15,000 pesos FOR EXTRAS, but fear this high pre-checks on your card. I since november 2013 booked a MASTER SUITE, and requested VIEW TO THE ZOCALO. They ( the management seem to never Read their reservations...) took me to my MASTER SUITE 407, at the very bottom and end of the hotel, the room was stuffy and mildew smelly....the only window rusted stocks, impossible to open... The only possible ventilation is the NOISY EXTRACTOR ( permanently ON, so hard to sleep in this place) and the Air Conditioning. I took with a smile... Tired of the long flight, just went to sleep until the extractor took over: forget sleeping at this 407 room...
Next morning, we went down for breakfast, and very nicely, if jewish or Hispanic I suppose, ended at the tables at bottom: perhaps the view is only for "European or American tourists", and on our 2nd time there I clearly noticed, DIFERENCES ARE MADE...I took it with a smile, the last one. On our second night there, I NEEDED TO MAKE A PHONE CALL, remember the 15,000pesos pre-charge on my Visa Platinum? They kindly told me " for my safety" I could not use the outside line directly...but there are 3 phones at this 407 room... They told me they would " pass the call"... Never did. So, I had to dress up again, leave MY 407 STUFFY MASTER SUITE, AND HEAD DOWN STAIRS, to start my suffering at the Main desk. The phone call to my tour operator, a call free local number, took over 45 minutes, I was standing up, never offered not even a stool or chair... And I tried to talk to a manager, but forget it. Managers leave for the night. Another tourist, who saw the whole deal, surprise, an American, told me THEY HAD ACCESS TO THE PHONE... Too much. Next day, I placed a written complain, claiming abuse on the charge to my card, since I was not aloud to use the phone, and refuse to use any other service from the hotel. I left today, and do not recommend to stay at this place...unless you are White, European or Americans.

Thank you for taking the time to write your sincere opinion about your recent stay with us. We are very sorry to know that you felt like you describe during your latest experience. We can assure you that at Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico we do not make distinction, all our guests are equally important, still then we have talked with our staff about this situation and they assure us it was never their intention to bother you or disrespect you in any way. As the credit card situation you kindly reported us, we would like to mention that those boucher are taken only as a guarantee per each night and we do not make any charge at least that we have the guest authorization, all extras charges are independent of this guarantee, those can be made only when our guests left an open one, so all phone calls are made through our reception department because of our commutador request it. Also in case of the inconvenient on your room we are having special attention on our equipment in order that it will not represent an impediment for our guest´s rest. In our both restaurants, we have tables with view, which are always assigned for everyone who claim it as the availability allows it, but if you request a change of table, our captain can make it when a table will be free. We take comments like yours very seriously and use them in order to keep improving our service. Be sure that we will watch more carefully the attention and procedures our colleagues are providing in order to avoid this situation. Therefore, we extend the most courteous invitation to visit us again. We are sure that next time you will feel completely different about us.

We stayed four night at the Gran Hotel. The hotel is beautiful and in a wonderful location for sightseeing. We had excellent breakfasts everyday in the restaurant. We were so grateful for the friendly and excellent service provided by our waiter, Daniel Copelera. He helped us through our limited Spanish with grace and charm.
