“Beautiful getaway, in the historic centre of Mexico City.”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

The location is fantastic and the hotel is beautiful. The rooms are luxurious and in keeping with the hotel. The rooms are very comfortable and very quiet. It was the best bed I have had in Mexico. The staff are very accommodating and will get tickets for shows or tours. There are many good restaurants in the area.

we stayed recently. Very central with many sites an easy walk away. We stayed here as I had seen a picture of the entrance hall. It is fabulous along with the art deco lift the bell boy took us up in. Staff were friendly. Our room was enormous and at the back of building , so no view but very quiet. We felt perfectly safe wandering around the area. Loved watching the 8am raising of national flag in the square and the 6pm lowering.

Room Tip: back room was quiet but I imagine the front will have plenty to see.

It is always a pleasure to read such nice comments about our building and staff. As you mention we have some rooms that are very quiet so our guests can rest peacefully but we also have some rooms with a lovely Zocalo view and to the 16 de Septiembre street for those who are fond of the liveliness of this area.
Maybe the next time you will try this rooms, we will feel very proud to receive you again!

Stayed at this hotel for 5 days in December. The rooms are older but very big, high ceilings, gorgeous bathrooms. THe lobby had old fashioned elevators, Tiffany stained glass ceiling, and peacocks in cages. Very historic. Go to the top floor and have a margarita on the rooftop patio restaurant that overlooks the zocalo, fantastic. The Aztec soup is delicious. Every night there was a chocolate on our pillow and upon checkin a lovely plate of fruit and chocolate. Free water every day. In the lobby there is an espresso machine (free). The Zocalo is right around the corner as is the pedestrian Madero street. For breakfast we went to Sanborns (on Madero), about 10 min walk, but fantastic. Front desk staff very helpful and friendly. Only downfall is the beds a bit dated so not fantastically comfortable and the internet was extremely slow.

Great hotel, with beautifully appointed rooms and excellent ambience, architecture, location (the Zocalo!), lobby, elegant old style elevators and Tiffany glass. But what made my stay at this hotel extra special were the outstanding staff, (especially Juan Luis and Cynthia but also everyone I met here), with excellent English and an obvious eagerness to be most welcoming and helpful. They are genuinely nice people who seem to me to love their profession and city. Mexico City is incredibly beautiful, with too much to see and do in my several day stay. Historic, great food and art, safe and clean, wonderful museums and parks, lovely central area and neighborhoods-frankly, I am surprised this hotel and this city do not get the press they deserve.

Room Tip: Zocalo facing rooms have terrific views, like living right out of a history book, but can be a bit n...

I chose this hotel mainly because of its location on Zocalo and though I had read a lot of reviews and had seen many pictures , I was very impressed by its gorgeous design. You will feel a special atmosphere when you enter the lobby and look at "a Tiffany stained glass ceiling from 1908" and hear birds singing. The atmosphere is really special and the service is impeccable.Your breakfast will be served on the ground floor and the view of Zocalo is partially restricted but you can enjoy a spectacular view from the rooftop restaurant Terazza. We enjoyed our meals in both restaurants and were impressed by a personal attitude: the maitre d' seemed to memorise our names at once. Our room was quite big and very quiet since it wasn't on Zocalo side. The beds were very comfortable. On the whole, we had a very pleasant stay at this hotel,
especially taking into consideration the moderate price we paid. You can get a very good price if you reserve a room 3-4 months in advance.I would definitely recommend this great Gran Hotel.

This 1895 belle époque building is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen and wonderfully maintained. With a Tiffany-like ceiling it is stunning, especially during the day. The rooms are spacious but those on the Zocalo are so noisy it is impossible to find peace from the bustle of a major city. The noise is so loud that the building shakes at times - it could be loud music, drumming, etc. The noise does settle down by 9 PM usually. We had to ask to have our rooms made up after 3:30 PM or we might have been overlooked. The taxi "service" the hotel worked with sometimes backed up on city streets and often didn't know where they were going, stopping to ask someone else for directions. Visit this hotel by day, stay somewhere else and enjoy the beautiful, exciting art is Mexico City.

Room Tip: Have lunch and see the hotel, but I wouldn't recommend staying here.

We are sorry that you feel this way towards your recent experience. Like you mention, our Zocalo view rooms tend to have all the liveliness of the Downtown area as a daily show. Nevertheless we also count with Internal View rooms for our guests that require a more quiet stay, which we would definitely like to suggest for your next stay.
As for the taxi service, we are sorry to know you had such an impression. This external company we work with also works with several hotels in the area so the drivers usually know the surroundings and popular spots very well. Maybe they count with new colleagues, which we assure you we will carefully revise. We hope that you consider giving us the opportunity to receive you again, we trust that you will dearly enjoy our Internal view rooms.

Even if you do not stay at this hotel, a visit to its public area is a must. The hotel is located right beside the Zocalo, so there is no reason not to visit. The lobby features art deco styling, including Tiffany-style glass in the elevators, bird cages and the spectacular dome.
Friends and I (female, 40, 65 & 69) spent three nights at this beautiful old hotel. We loved it for its historical feel and its fabulous location. Our spacious rooms were done in a French provincial style, bathrooms more contemporary. Decor here is a little tired, but so charming as to be entirely acceptable. It was clean. Beds were comfortable. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Off-season prices were unbeatable. We found the hotel restaurant unexciting and not great value for money, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby, including the stunning blue tile Sanborns with its phenomenal breakfasts about 8 min on foot. I would be more than happy to stay here again.
