You must visit this museum during your trip to Mexico City. It truly is one of the nicest museums I have ever stepped foot in. We only had a little over two hours to visit it (which we knew would do it no justice) but decided two hours was better than not going at all. I would say book a tour guide days before you plan to visit the museum; we tried to book one online (from a third party) the night before we went to visit and found that no one was available until the next month. As stated by many other reviewers, this is definitely a place worth investing in a tour guide, especially if Spanish isn't a language that you already speak (as there are many captions that are only in Spanish). I would definitely do some internet research the night before (or a couple of days, or something) to ensure you can see all of the important, well-known exhibits in the museum. If in a time crunch, definitely visit the Mayan and Aztec exhibits. Don't forget to visit the outside exhibits (where you can see replicas of various structures from those individuals during that particular time period).

Sundays are busy as the museum is free for all Mexican citizens. Student discounts are offered only for Mexican students (sadly).

This impressive museum shouldn't be missed by anyone who visits Mexico City. It is divided into 2 floors. The first floor corresponds to the history of the diverse prehispanic cultures that settled in Mesoamerica. The second floor is dedicated to the contemporary indigenous people in Mexico. I highly recommend to visit the Mayan and Aztec sections, these are on the first floor.
This museum also has a section in which temporary exhibitions are displayed. These exhibitions are also extremely interesting. I had the oportunity to see one about the Russian Tsars and one about Persia and it's history.
Tip: on sundays the admission is free.

Want to learn more about the history of Mexico. This is the place to go. You can spend hours viewing the exhibits. We found that doing it over 2 days was better than trying to get it all in on one day.

Modern, vast, easy access. This museum shows a wide variety of objects, along with videos to support the learning of ancient Mexican cultures.

This is an absolute must for anyone interested in and planing to explore the Meso-American civilisations of which it provides a fantastic overview: historical, geographical, cultural, and artistic. We in visited this museum after we had visited Teotihuacan and 6 Mayan sites in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize and saw many of the stelae, artefacts and other important pieces which originated from many of the temples we had seen, and the vast collection is housed in an architectural gem. Vaut le voyage!
