You must visit this museum during your trip to Mexico City. It truly is one of the nicest museums I have ever stepped foot in. We only had a little over two hours to visit it (which we knew would do it no justice) but decided two hours was better than not going at all. I would say book a tour guide days before you plan to visit the museum; we tried to book one online (from a third party) the night before we went to visit and found that no one was available until the next month. As stated by many other reviewers, this is definitely a place worth investing in a tour guide, especially if Spanish isn't a language that you already speak (as there are many captions that are only in Spanish). I would definitely do some internet research the night before (or a couple of days, or something) to ensure you can see all of the important, well-known exhibits in the museum. If in a time crunch, definitely visit the Mayan and Aztec exhibits. Don't forget to visit the outside exhibits (where you can see replicas of various structures from those individuals during that particular time period).
Sundays are busy as the museum is free for all Mexican citizens. Student discounts are offered only for Mexican students (sadly).
