Owner description: This famous church, located on the site where an Indian claimed to have seen the Virgin of Guadalupe in 1531, contains an image of her that is the most famous religious icon in all of Mexico.

Basilica de Guadalupe Church is one of the sacred site which is famous all over the world. We were very fulfilled when we reached this location. There are at least 4-5 churches in this site. We attend the mass on a Saturday afternoon and it was very solemn. I saw the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary located above the altar of the new basilica which is amazing. We reached this religious site by using the Metro train which is easy and cheap but it can be crowded during rushed hours. We took the train from Insurgentes Station which is close to our hotel and get off at Balderas station. From Balderas station get on to train going to Indios Verdes but we get off at Deportivo 18 del Marzo and get the red line/Ruta 6 going towards Martin Carrera but get off at La villa Basilica. The Basilica site is very wide they also have the Hill Chapel, Museum and Garden.

My wife and I came on pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City in thanksgiving for twenty five years of a very happy marriage. It was well worth the journey from our home in Ireland. We stayed in the centre of Mexico City (Paseo de la Reforma) and we were able to catch the local bus to the shrine outside our hotel with a journey time of 25 minutes. Once in a lifetime trip.

In my half dozen trips to DF, I had never ventured up to visit the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. By subway, it's less than 30 minutes from the Zocalo. At the metro stop La Villa-Basílica one is just a few steps away from the main path toward the basilica complex. Catholic or not, it's a short pilgrimage worth making if for nothing else, the architecture, the gardens, the sculptures, and the peace of mind. If you've been traveling for any amount of time, the basilica is a most pleasant oasis for rest or contemplation. Both old and new coexist peacefully together. One is struck by both the style of the 16th century Antigua Basílica as well as the brilliance of the newer structure. Be sure to climb the exquisite staircase that leads to the Capilla del Cerrito (Hill Chapel) and then over to the backside for more gardens and waterfalls. The sculpture of the Virgin gracing that side of the park will be one of the highlights of this visit. If you're as lucky as I was today to hear choir music in the new basilica, you'll think you're being serenaded by angles.

Not the big deal that Catholics make of it, but still worth a stop to see. There are a lot of past, present, legend, and fact all in one large site.
