I went with my family to see the shrine. Unlike other reviewers, I didn't feel unsafe here. We saw both the old and new basilicas. The old one is much more impressive.

It is not only a church. The surrondings as astonishing and a favorit of mexicans and visitors. Do not miss the Old Basilica and the other chapels, one for each aparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe. the one in the top of the mountain is a must.

Visiting the Shrine of Guadalupe, you are not simply visiting a Catholic church. This is the center of the Mexican universe, since this is a place the the Goddess Tonantzin was and IS venerated. In a way this is how the Aztec rites have survived by being combined to those of the conquerors. To this day, in Nahuatl-speaking communities (in other communities as well), the Virgin continues to be called “Tonantzin” and her appearance is commemorated on December 12 each year.
Come to the shrine and you will feel and participate in the ENERGY that millions of people have deposited there, it is again a lifetime experience.

We booked a tour to see the Pyramids of Teotihuacan and the Basilica was an added bonus. I was brought up in a strong catholic family, and it was amazing to see the Basilica in person. I don't think there are any words to define how glorious the two churches are, nor the faith the mexican community here has. I feel very blessed to have seen this in person, and although this wasn't a choice, am so glad that we saw this and would highly recommend anyone going to Mexico City to make this a high priority.

I visited the Basilica in a Sunday, and was extremely worth seeing how the faith guides that people. In my humble opinion, the Old Basilica is much more impressive than the new one.
