“History coming alive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2012

Simple yet fascinating museum. The whole house is kept as it was on the day Trotsky was murdered. We had a personalised guided tour in English that was really interesting and helped us understand how complicated things got during the Cold War. The experience was enjoyable for my 13 and 17 year old children as well as for me, a history teacher.

“Well worth seeing, even if you're not a history buff”

Nothing fancy or beautiful here, but very interesting. The entrance is not on Vienna, where you expect it to be -- it is on the other side of the block, on Churrubusco (sp?).

“Good, Small Museum Feels Authentic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2012

Located a just a few short blocks from Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in the quiet, Coyoacan area of Mexico City, the Museo Leon Trotsky is a tour through the modest, one story home he and his wife lived in after falling out with Diego Rivera and Kahlo. As a leading Marxist intellectual, Trotsky spent his days reading, writing and tending his chickens and rabbits. The house, which is surrounded by high walls consists of a kitchen, dining area, study/work area, main bedroom, small bedroom and bathroom with a cast iron tub. There are bullet holes in the main bedroom, where a group of Mexican Stalinist supporters launched a middle of the night raid aiming to kill Trotsky. They did not succeed and then-President Cardenas order security beefed up. Windows opening to the street were bricked up and a doorway was as well. Overall, the museum reveals the modest living quarters of a leading Marxist intellectual who, despite the protection of the Mexican government, was eliminated by Stalin.

The house looks very much as it must have looked on the night in 1940 when Stalinist agent Ramon Mercader buried an ice-axe into Trotsky's brain as he worked at his desk in the study. There are even items of his clothing in a closet. In the shady courtyard is a monument marking the resting place of Trotsky's ashes and in an adjacent building are news clippings, contemporary photos, and various art works. All explanatory notes are in Spanish. Photogrpahy is permitted.

“Interesting contrast to Frida's house”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2012

In this house, Trotsky and members of his family and entourage lived after he was booted from Frida & Diego's house (after Diego found out about his affair with Frida). Whereas Frida's house is open and light, Trotsky's is dark, behind high walls and bricked up windows so that he could avoid Stalin's hit squads. Alas, he was in the end not lucky. The house oozes history and mood... it is as it was left, maintained by his followers. The garden is lovely too. Should not be missed.

“Highlight of Mexico city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2012

The house-museum Leon Trotsky was an open book, of history, human nature, politics, all in one. Extreamly recommendable to those with learning will. You will understand why he ran away through the hole world, why he was killed, how, you will even see the bullets on the wall.
No hollywood fake rollercoaster. This museum shows real world, real people.
No mather you love capitalism or hate it, it will help you either way.
