My wife and I were spending Christmas in downtown near Zocalo and wanted to have Christmas dinner on the terrace of this restaurant because of the beautiful views of the cathedral and palace. To get a reservation on the terrace, we were required to pay for the meal (600 pesos each!), which we unfortunately did.

The service was terrible and though we and the other people dining on the terrace tried to be patient (because it was Christmas and we felt sorry for the staff having to be apart from their families), we all eventually became quite frustrated. Two of the tables near me spoke quite harshly to the manager while my wife and I silently waited on our food. When it finally arrived it was cold and tasteless, a great disappointment. We walked out without finishing while another table of customers berated the manager.

The only reason I would ever return to this restaurant is to sneak onto the terrace to take a photo:

The La Terraza del Conquistador at the Zocalo in Mexico City used to be an excellent place for taking visiting family members, friends or business partners to one of Mexico's most famous and most visited places, the Zocalo of the capitol.
At the beginning it might be a bit hard to find, but the hidden entrance is located between all the small jewellery shops at the Zocalo opposite to the Palacio de Gobierno de México. From the roof top terrace of the sixth floor the view is marvellous with the cathedral on the left, the Palacio de Gobierno of the country vis-a-vis and the even more beautiful architecture of the city government to the right. Of course, what I forgot is one of Mexico's items the people are most proud of, the huge flag in the center of the square. People arround here say it is the biggest flag in the world! Every day arround 17:40h the military takes down the flag, folds it and carries it into the Palacio de Gobierno. In the morning there is supposed to be the same ceremony for putting it to the pole.

Now, this was already all of what is nice at this place. The service is very bad and recently they introduced a minimum consumption per person of 200 Pesos for sitting on the terrace enjoying the view. In my honest opinion, food is not bad here, but by far not the best and the most typical option in the city center. Therefore, it used to be a nice place to stop by with family, friends or business partners just to have a quick beer, tequila or espresso and then after the ceremony go to another place to have dinner.

Anyhow, the nice atmosphere and the precious view probably puts them into the position to be able to start with such policies, but if it was not the only place with this view, you can be sure that I would prefer another.
