“Overrated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2012

This restaurant in the Hotel Nikko in Polanco was highly recommended by the concierge and another friend. It is Japanese with a very complex menu that is poorly translated into English. The wait staff could not explain the various options adequately. The sushi selections were per piece and very expensive. We sat in the dining room at 6:30 pm and were the first ones in the restaurant. Soon after a very loud group was seated very near and talked loudly on a cell phone throughout dinner. This made the experience less than delightful. We were asked to order immediately after being seated and we requested a few minutes to look at the menu. It was difficult to get the wait staff to return for the drink order. There was another very long wait after that to order the food. My wife ordered tempura which was brought to a side table long before my order of Benkay rib eye,(thin and unappealing with miso sauce),came. Needles to say the tempura was cold. It had to be sent back and subsequently arrived warm, but soggy. I think it was microwaved. Did not want to try anything after that. The cost of the food was very pricey for the quality and service.

“good not enough”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2012

It is good, everything is mini even the tables and place to seat. Go if you are near by, if not try going to Lomas or Santafe. They have better Japanese choices.

“The bill always hurts at Benkay, but the food is worth it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2012

... and that's why I keep coming back. Truth of the matter is Benkay has the best fish and traditional dishes of any Japanese restaurant I've been to in Mexico City. They really have the lot: imported fish, local fish, sushi dishes, hot dishes, traditional meals, Japanese beers, a wide range of Sake, very good service and a very very nice setting.

But... it is expensive. A full meal at Benkay with beers (no sake) will cost around USD 100 per person (and it can easily go over if you're inspired). So enjoy, but proceed with caution (unless you're not the one paying for it).

5 stars for the food / service / ambiance... 4 stars for the price.

“Superb japanese food and nice atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2012

We like japanese food and have visited most well regarded japanese restaurants in Mexico City and Benkay is by far the best.
It is located inside the Nikko hotel which is owned by Japan Airlines, so it is very authentic. Benkay was recently relocated and remodeled within the hotel building itself. It appears to be a bit smaller than before but atmosphere is a bit warmer.
Most japanese restaurants in the city place too much emphasis on sushi and do not offer too many other japanese options; that is not the case here, you can order many other authentic dishes like sashimi, shabu shabu, sukiyaki, etc. and you can rest assured that everything will be done done to perfection.
The sake list is impressive, japanese beer is also available. The waitresses wear cute kimonos and cater to you with a smile.
Parking is available inside the hotel but expensive, even after the free hour or so you get from the restaurant.
Request a table by the window facing the pebble garden, it is very peaceful.
Opens daily from 13:00 to 23:00 hrs.
