I began visiting this restaurant a few years ago when I used to have breakfast and in that time it was not bad but nothing excellent either, just good. We came back a year ago and things were a bit different, we ordered coffee and hot cocoa from Oaxaca, the coffee was a bit cold and not very good, the cocoa was extra sweet. Despite this last experience, last week, we decided to give this place a second chance since it is very well located if you are planning to go to a concert in Sala Nezahualcóyotl (inside the National University), so we had breakfast, THE MOST HORRIBLE BREAKFAST EVER! The food was cold, no good taste at all, the coffee was worse than the last time (tasted like water with sugar). The service was slow and the waiter was in a bad mood all the time. So it is clear to me now that the only good thing about this place is the location, NOTHING ELSE. Plus, you have to wait for almost 30 minutes for a table and they don't accept credit card payment. People go to this place because it is the only place inside the UNAM (university) to eat while you wait for the concert to begin. As a local, I recommend you NOT TO GO THERE, you will be very disappointed!

This time around I visited El Azul, the more upscale "branch" of Azul y Oro in Colonia Condesa. Although a reputable place with excellent Mexican food at affordable prices, this restaurant lacks the excellence expected of the establishment of a famous Mexican chef.

The choice of "fresh" greens for a do-it-yourself salad is poor and unattractive, and the kitchen-assembled salads are not creative and all fall in the worn-out formulas like mixing pears, candied nuts, and blue cheese (you know what I mean...).

My hibiscus (jamaica) enchiladas were soggy and lacked any distinctive or memorable flavors. Why not a well-spiced, well-seasoned sauce? Why was the jamaica tasteless (excessive extrusion of flavors to make agua de jamaica?). Why not top the enchiladas with a good aged cheese (añejo)?)

To end my meal, and out of environmental concerns, I ordered a glass of plain water instead of bottled water. Although it tasted good, I did not like the abundant sediments in the bottom of the glass. Can't you install a good filter?

To be fair, the nicoatole I had for dessert was fantastic, although the zapote sauce did not stand out. Can't you perk it up with orange juice or a dash of liqueur?

Azul y Oro is not anymore a destination in itself, so it must be visited only if you are in the National University campus (UNAM) and don't mind eating in a cafeteria (canteen) setting, where you will have to do without alcohol. You can give it's pricier Condesa branch a miss...

Had breakfast there yesterday with two frienda. The food was terrible the eggs arrived cold and insipid.
The sweet rolls had seen better days, probably more than a week. The first cup of coffee was good the refills were awful.
Frankly I don´t understand why the place is so famous.
A much better place is right in front of it at the new museum of modern art. It is named "Nube Siete" and is very good.
I do not recommed this place.

Azul y Oro is easily the best bargain in all of Mexico. Top end traditional mexican cuisine by his chef majesty, Ricardo Muñoz Zurita. Anyway, the restaurant is located in the CCU of UNAM -my alma mater, so beautiful. Take the subway to CU and the jump on the free UNAM shuttle (Line 3) tell the driver to drop you at CCU. Azul y Oro is next to the new MUAC, it beautiful to sit outside and enjoy remembering college days. About the food, I had the Tamalito de Frijol (awesome), tasted the Sopa de Tortilla (very subtle), had the Cochinita Pibil ( Incredible with Jamaica) and sampled the Mole, great.
And finally, with these prices, i wanted to start all over again.

This restaurant is located in the south end of the UNAM campus, in the Cultural Center complex. It features high-quality Mexican (Oaxacan) and international food that is elegantly presented. The prices are very reasonable: the most expensive item on the menu is salmon and it is only 100 pesos. You can find a wide range of items on the menu, from Oaxacan black mole to cheese cake. The restaurant is a bit out of the way, but well worth the trip (it is a 15 minute walk from the Perisur stop of the Metrobus). This is undoubtedly the best bang for the buck in D.F. as far as restaurants are concerned. Be aware that it closes early, the hours are: Sunday through Tuesday 10:00am – 6:00pm
Wednesday through Saturday 10:00am – 8:00 pm.
