“Lovely place with character”
Reviewed June 1, 2007

We spent five nights at El Zopilote Mojado, in the Yellow Room. It's a lovely place, clean and comfortable. We had a private bath--although not attached to the room--and a balcony big enough to view the beautiful street below. There is also a roof terrace with a terrific view.

The owners and staff were friendly and helpful. The cafe downstairs has good food, and it's a pleasant place to have a beer or glass of wine.

The room is a little noisy sometimes, because it is above a plaza where children play, but it's a nice noise. I believe the other rooms are quieter. And there is no traffic noise, as it is on a callejon with no cars. The location is very good, but the quickest way back from the Jardin involves a significant climb, so it might not be the best choice if your mobility is limited.

We'd certainly stay there again.

We stayed at El Zopilote Mojado for nine days and would stay there again. We were in the "blue room," which although small was immaculately clean, nicely furnished and decorated, and quite comfortable, as were the common areas. Our hosts, Raúl and Ana, were charming and helpful, as were all their staff. The cafe had a limited menu, but everything we had there was very good. The location could not have been better. It was a short walk to the jardin, to the Teatro Principal for concerts, to transportation. It helps, but is not necessary, if you speak some Spanish, since the staff does not speak English and the hosts are not always around. It was a wonderful stay and a great value. Our only caveat is to be sure you have instructions telling exactly how to drive there from the airport. The Zopilote Mojado is on a pedestrian only street, and our cab driver from the airport did not know how to get us very close, leaving us to schlep our luggage a good distance. I arrived cranky, but was soon cheered by the accommodations, friendly staff--and breakfast.

This is a clean, and comfortable place with great views.

Everyone is really nice, and the prices are excellent. We stayed in el Callejón de los perros muertos. Be prepared to walk up the cobblestones alleys, so bring comfortable shoes.

There is a kitchen, dining room, living room with a fireplace, and terrace with amazing views of the city.

It has a lot of character and charm. In the mornings you wake up to the sounds of barking dogs, church bells, and the gas and water guy yelling in the alley -not necessarily bad!

My spouse, myself, my sister-in-law and niece all stayed at El Zopilote Mojado for three nights. It is extremely clean and modern and were very happy with the beds, the rooms, the sitting area, which was nice since we were all together, yet not together. I also like that it is close to everything, and like the key pad rather than carrying around a key.

We only got to eat one breakfast in the restaurant, since it was the New Year's weekend and so it was closed, but he breakfast was great.

The owners are nice and helpful, when we needed a wine opener, they provided one, as well as setting up glasses.

I would strongly recommend staying there. You can't beat it for the price. Since I was the one who made the reservations, based on the forum's review, all in our party were extremely happy with the rooms and location. It also has a great terrace and view and was a very quiet place to stay.

We spent a week in Guanajuato and stayed at El Zopilote Mojado. We chose it for the interesting name (The Wet Vulture) and after reviewing the website. The hotel is located on a small plaza about a 5 minute walk uphill from the Jardin del Union. There is no vehicular traffic around the plaza, so no traffic noise. The hotel is a small house with a cafe on the ground floor, 3 bedrooms on the second floor and a rooftop patio. We booked the Blue and Yellow Rooms, each with its own bathroom. The White Room is between the two and can only be rented with one or the other, as an additional family room. We had the entire place to ourselves. Between the Blue and Yellow Rooms is a common sitting area. There are electronic safety deposit boxes in each room and plenty of closet space. The Yellow room overlooks the plaza, and has doors open to small patios with potted plants. The Blue Room is at the back with a window overlooking an interior airway. There are no screens on windows but there are no bugs so they are not necessary. Bottled water is provided each day. Everything was kept spotlessly clean. The rooftop patio is half roofed to provide shade, with a table and chairs and a couple of loungers. Potted plants abound. The view is magnificent.
The maids, who also run the cafe, were very courteous and pleasant. The owner is Raul Galarza, who speaks English well, is a very genial cosmopolitan fellow, and very accommodating. He arranged transportation to and from the airport, which is about 30km away, which made travel much easier and is well worth the $30 charge. The driver was Antonio, who works at one of the language schools in Guanajuato, and was very prompt and courteous, though does not speak English.
The cafe downstairs opens at 9am, or thereabouts, on weekdays, and serves the best coffee in town, as well as delicious breakfasts and sandwiches.
The downside is the Yellow Room is quite noisy in the morning and late at night, because of pedestrian traffic, often dragging wheeled carts across the cobbled stone plaza, and a Gas salesman who comes around every morning shouting his wares. Sometimes kids are playing in the plaza late at night. The Blue Room is at the back and so is not so noisy.
Overall, our stay at the Zopilote was exceptional, and well worth the $50 a night.

Four of us stayed at El Zopilote Mojado in mid February, a five minute walk from the Jardin de la Union and all the restaurants you could wish for. We both had a nice room with own bathrooms(blue room the quietest, no outlook but french doors for air) Sun room at front a little noisy at times,no traffic though. Nice sitting area, could do with more comfortable seats, but lovely and cool with balcony looking out onto Plaza Mexiamora (pedestrian only)

Great cafe downstairs serving excellent coffee and light meals including breakfast. Owners Raul and Ana were very easy going ,friendly and helpful with pick up service from Leon airport.

Upstairs is a great terrace looking out over the city, south facing but partly roofed for shade. Would definately stay there again.

I concur with other reviewers on the virtues of El Zopilote Mojado -- Raul and Ana, the friendly and helpful proprietors; the comfortable and nicely-decorated rooms, especially the new apartments in the annex building; the good, filling breakfasts and tasty cakes in the cafe; and the handy location on a quiet plaza just a few minutes' walk from the center of town. Raul and Ana also arranged a massage for me (perhaps the best I've received) and transportation to and from the airport. In all, this is a great place to stay over a long weekend in Guanajuato!
