“A very nice place to stay in Guanajuato”
Reviewed February 24, 2007

I concur with other reviewers on the virtues of El Zopilote Mojado -- Raul and Ana, the friendly and helpful proprietors; the comfortable and nicely-decorated rooms, especially the new apartments in the annex building; the good, filling breakfasts and tasty cakes in the cafe; and the handy location on a quiet plaza just a few minutes' walk from the center of town. Raul and Ana also arranged a massage for me (perhaps the best I've received) and transportation to and from the airport. In all, this is a great place to stay over a long weekend in Guanajuato!

We stayed here in February, 2007. Raul Galarza, the owner, is wonderful and very helpful. The cafe is very peaceful and has a great breakfast. We had a room in the house nearby (owned by El Zopilote Mojado) and had the use of the entire house, including kitchen and patio with breathtaking view. We are a retired couple and stayed 5 days. It was the best part of our trip as Guanajuato is a great town and the accomodations were so perfect. We would recommend this place to everyone.

If you're visiting Guanajuato, definitely stay at El Zopilote Mojado. It's close enough to the central part of town to be an easy walk but it's quiet, too. The guest house is extremely clean and comfortable, and the lovely decor only adds to the enjoyment. In addition, the housekeeping staff and the owner are very friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful time in Guanajuato and staying at El Zopilote Mojado was part of why our time there was so pleasant.

  • Liked — the location and the cleanliness and attractiveness of it
  • Disliked — it's difficult to explain to a cab driver where it is because it's on a very small street

We spent 7 days and would have spent more if time permitted. Guanajuato is a picturesque colonial town with hills that meander through it like a maze. There are tons of stores, restaurants and everything is accessible, provided one can walk and climb stairs. Prices are reasonsable in comparison to San Miguel Allende. We visited during Xmas so we had the fortunate experience of partaking in several posadas - a cultural enriching experience! (even if not catholic).

The well kept house we stayed, Perros Mojados, is located walking distance to the Jardin but far away enough that it was a private heaven. The house is located in a safe neigborhood, has all the comforts of home (except a phone and a multi channel TV, but who needs this when you are vacationing right?) and it is located amongst very friendly and kind locals who will tell you about everything you want to know about the neighborhood and their life in Guanajuato.

The house did not have central heat, which was a little rough at times but manageable if one brings appropriate clothing. The bedroom we had upstairs had a heating blanket which helped immensely..thank you!

The room is quite large although the bed not as large as a we are used to, (this may be a downer for some; for us it was fine), it has a large bathroom with a huge tub with hot water 24/7. We were very happy with our choice of accommodations and no we didn't see any cockroaches.

The only downside is the noise at night, but this is very common in many parts of Mexico we have visited. Between the church bells, the dogs and the echoing voices we had a difficult time sleeping at times. Thank goodnes for the ear plugs!

Thank you to the owners, Trini and the staff for making our stay pleasant and worry free . We would love to come back and stay there again.

Visited Guanajuato for the Thanksgiving Holidays with my mom. I booked the Sun and White Rooms in the hotel. The design is great--the White Room is in between the Sun and Blue Rooms and can open up to either room especially great when visiting with family like we did.

Mr. Galarza (or Raul) was a fantastic host. We arrived early at noon but were able to check in which was great considering we were either on a plane or in transit since midnight. We did request the airport pickup service from the hotel which was US$28. Raul showed us our rooms and gave us a tour of the hotel and from the terrace pointed out the different sights we could visit with a brief history of the place. Needless to say I left my guidebook back in the hotel room the entire time I was visiting.

I'd have to agree with the previous reviewer who said it was hard to describe El Zopilote Mojado. Its a bit like a small quaint hotel, or guesthouse, or bed and breakfast altogther. To me it felt like staying in someone's nice house than a hotel.

The state of the facilities and rooms were great. Everything looked new and well kept. The hotel is only about 2 years old so its likely not listed in any of the guidebooks American travelers frequently use (eg. Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Frommer's, Fodor's, etc). The main room (Sun/Blue Rooms) did have an electronic safe, but we never felt the need to use it. The Sun Room did have its own private bathroom with hot water available 24/7 and was cleaned daily. My mom was even suprised that our hosts provided us with bottled water (everyday in each room), towels and toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner) upon checking in. We've stayed in hotels back here in the States where you either have to ask or pay for toiletries--almost nothing is complimentary these days in American hotels. There were even electric blankets provided without us asking which was nice given the cool evenings in Guanajuato.

The hotel is located in a Plaza off a street only a few minutes' walk from the main plaza, La Jardin Union. The side streets and plaza immediately around the hotel are pedestrian only. So the hotel is free from the late night noise from the crowds and mariachis on weekend evenings around the Jardin Union--which is great for those who like to call it a night earlier than most other visitors. Like some of the other reviewers mentioned there is a steep climb to get to or from the hotel to the main plaza and touristy areas. But that's like much of Guanajuato city, you're either climbing up or down streets or steps to get to wherever you're going.

There is some construction work on the plaza outside the hotel but there's public works construction occurring all over Guanajuato city so its not just isolated to this one little area of town. I was never really bothered by the noise, but those who are light sleepers or late risers might prefer the Blue Room (my mom stayed in the White Room and said she never heard any of the construction work which usually started around 8am on the weekdays).

What I also loved about the hotel was its a great place to relax and rest after a full day of sightseeing and walking around town. I can't wait to bring other family members or friends to visit for future trips to Guanajuato and would definitely stay here again. And thanks to Mr Galarza and the staff at El Zopilote Mojado for a wonderful time!

It is a good address with reservations. Location is superb: in Centro, but on a plazuela cut off from much car traffic. That also meant we had to walk a bit to get a taxi.

But the church bells still ring and the dogs bark furiously. Probably unavoidable in town...

Upkeep is excellent; lots of modern convenience, but we had no t.v. Secured electronic house entry; safety box in the room.

Overall attractive hotel. Excellent resto recommendations from Raoul; when he comes by.

Breakfast offerings are limited and not before 9:30 a.m. That means no breakfast on an early departure day.

The linen could have been cleaner and also the glasses. Kleenex were in shortage.

  • Liked — its llocation
  • Disliked — linen, glasses
  • Tips/Secrets — bring ear plugs because unlikely to get quieter in the Centro

Thank you for your comments! Our practice is to change the linens every 3rd day or upon our customers' request. We strive to maintain high standards of cleanliness and will pay more attention to this detail! Plenty of kleenex should have been available for your stay and we will ensure that this is the case in the future! Again, thank you for your business and we appreciate the opportunity to continue improving.

We just stayed here last week and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is very clean, comfortable and picturesque. We stayed in the blue room, which wasn't our first choice but it worked out fine. I don't think you can go wrong with any room here. It was very quiet and it had a nice bathroom. In particulr, we loved the terrace. The view was spectacular. The coffee down stairs was the best in town for sure! We loved our stay and I would recomend this hotel to anyone. One of the pictures I posted is of the stairways going up to the hotel. It shows one of MANY workers who have to carry sacks of materials up to the plaza they are repairing. It did make for quite a bit of noice but at least in the Blue Room, we were away from the street and it was quiet. Once the work is done, it should be a very nice spot to relax. Thanks to the hosts.
