“Jalisco atmosphere, Guanajuato food, across from the University”
Reviewed March 25, 2014

The owner is attentive in this restaurant popular with Mexicans. Long established, it's on Positos/Pocitos, near the Museo del Pueblo, the Diego Rivera house, the Museum of the 19th century and another new museum of contemporary art. Plenty to look at as you wait for your meal served in three courses. The price has gone up a little but is still moderate. Unbeatable location. Offers alcoholic drinks too.

“Great food for cheap”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

The menu del dia is an amazing value and each item, while not large portions, is well cooked and seasoned and for $5.00 is a steal. I also had the tacos arranchera - delicious flank steak tacos with all the perfect trimmings. Wish we had had time to go back there again. Oh well - next time.

“Great bargain!”
Reviewed December 5, 2013

This is a wonderful place to stop for lunch if you are on a budget or if you simply don't want a fancy meal. Honest, home cooked food at an unbelievably low price. We each had soup, entree, side dish, bread, and drink. The food was very good, the service prompt and friendly, and the total bill was well under $10US for both of us. What more can I say?

“Great value, good food”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

El Tapatio is located just across the street from the "Universidad", which is Guanajuato's law school, a very noticeable while castle-like building, quite a sight in itself. The interior of the Tapatio restaurant is very Mexican, which makes it all the more enjoyable. Lots of wood & lots of Mexican tiles. A poster of the very first Cervantino festival is there to remind you of how long the restaurant has been there, giving you a hint of the authenticity of the food there maybe.
The waiter isn't the most social person in the world but he is efficient and you never have to wait : that's what matters most, isn't it ?
The prices are very very reasonable and the food is good to very good depending on what you choose.
There is a 55 pesos menu that includes a soup (choice of two), an accompaniment of some sort to choose from (usually rice and something else), and a choice of meats to choose from, as well as a drink and a desert. There are extremely few places in Gto that can compete with that on price, let alone quality. I would say this is possibly the second best value in town, right after "the 35 pesos place", that basically offers the same sort of menu in a cheaper setting.
El Tapatio is becoming my 'go to' place because of its outstanding value.
The Tortilla soup is just $28, the soup of the day is a tiny $17, and with that you get bread & usually fried tortilla chips with salsa.
The enmoladas & mole are very good and around 45-50$ if i remember well. The enchiladas mineras are priced very reasonably too.
Overall, if you are expecting very good value you will not be disappointed, whether you are Mexican or not.
Quite frankly i am surprised this place isn't full all day as there are very few places that reach this level of quality on certain dishes and even fewer that come anywhere the value.

Note: this is not a posh venue for fancy occasions, see this rather as an authentic Mexican restaurant priced for Mexicans with food the indigenous population will appreciate for it's true quality.

“Tasty, fast, and filling”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

I ate here twice. First time, I had milanesa de pollo (chicken schnitzel-style) which was nothing fancy, but tasty and filling. Second time, I had the set-menu lunch, which featured pollo en mole rojo (chicken in chocolate-spicy sauce) plus various other courses. Yummy, and a great value.

Before your meal arrives they also give you a basket of bread, a basket of chips, and salsas for dipping.

The only downside - a minor one - would be the somewhat cramped space; at the tables-for-two you're hard-pressed to find a spot that isn't on the path to the kitchen or a bathroom.
