It's worth taking the funicular up to the monument to see the city from above, all the brightly colored houses as well as the churches, the university, etc.

“Nice view!”
Reviewed February 18, 2014

Would like some written descriptions of what the statue was about. Great views of the city though. Some indicators of what you are looking at would be good. Too many people trying to sell you guides, over and over and over again. I was polite but it does get tiring. We took a taxi to the top (50 Pesos) and walked down.

“Great views of the city”

But be prepared for hawkers of souvenirs and lots of stalls - but it's worth the visit whether or not you want to buy anything - the Mexicans here were friendly and never over-pushy

“A View that Cannot be Missed”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

The statue itself is impressive to see but the view is a "must do." It gives you a panoramic view of the city and is perfect for that couple or group holiday photo. Access is by the funicular. Vendors sell refreshments and souvenirs. Don't miss this!

“This is the way to enter the city”
Reviewed February 14, 2014

This is a heroic statue which looks down on the city. It gives you an idea of how this hero of the 1810 revolution is thought of but it also gives you a superb understanding of the layout of downtown before you get to ground level.
