Owner description: 17 Gardens Of Three Acres Located On The Grounds Of An Old 16th-century Hacienda, Which Still Includes Some Original Furniture.
Reviewed March 23, 2014

This old hacienda used to be a site for extracting silver from the rocks mined around Gto. Thousands of indigenous people died of mercury poisoning in the past. Now the site has been turned into a magnificent garden. AS a result, it is a very strange combination of misery and beauty. Take your camera. You will enjoy the memories. although only a 10 minute cab ride from Centro Historico, it has a calmness that is a nice contrast to the downtown area.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the ex hacienda. The main house is a beautiful structure and with its furnishings provides an interesting glimpse into the lifestyle of the wealthy elite of the period.

The gardens are a beautiful and refreshing setting to relax and wander about at a leisurely pace. We frequently found ourselves saying, "this would be a great place to entertain guests," as we found a new garden or small plaza. What a life it must have been! The various gardens ranged from small to large and from formal to whimsical.

The cost of admission is only about 28 pesos (about $2.00 US). Although the structures and grounds are maintained fairly well, they are clearly showing the signs of decline. Also, it would be great if there were English audioguides available; my wife and I would have gladly paid much more for this than the cost of admission.

We took a taxi both to and from the ex hacienda at a cost of about 45 pesos each way. I would definitely recommend the Museo Exhacienda San Gabriel de Barrera to anyone visiting Guanajuato and who enjoys history, architecture, and gardens cast on a grand scale.

If you don’t speak Spanish, good luck on finding the right bus to get there! We speak passible Spanish, and spent an hour waiting for the number 030 we were told to take by another bus driver, and when we got frustrated we started asking every bus going to Marfil if it went to Hotel Mision. Finally got the right one! 5 pesos. After the lack of green spaces in central Guanajuato it was nice to be in a park-like atmosphere with a lot of trees. There was no information posted anywhere about the hacienda, other than a few old signs identifying furniture styles in the moldering rooms of the hacienda. As for the gardens, there was nothing special about them. The hacienda was not nearly as interesting as other ones we have visited across Mexico. We were very surprised this was ranked #4 on trip advisor. Oh, and there was no guide named Carlos around, or anyone to ask for information about the history of the hacienda. A disappointing half day – if you’re looking for something interesting to do, there are many more rewarding places to visit in the historic center of Guanajuato.

We spent a delightful morning touring the gardens and the hacienda interiors furnished in authentic period furniture. A great place to go for a little quiet in the festive city of Guanajuato. If you enjoy imagining another time in history, don't miss it.

The ex-Hacienda San Gabriel de Barrera offers striking gardens - 17 in all - many of them devoted to a specific style. The hacienda itself is well restored with period furniture and provides an interesting look at how the hacienda owner and his family lived.

The grounds are breathtaking
