We were so very lucky to be recommended this little town for a visit. We were also very lucky to stumble upon a taxi driver who could go on at length about the history of the place (in Spanish). he charged us (4 people) 1000 pesos for a 6-hour trip to and around Pozos from SMA (6 hours was all we had, though more would have been nice, as it is a pleasant hour-plus drive each way). We ate an amazing lunch at Posada de Pozos and visited the impressive Galeria 6 art place (at the corner of the central square--don't miss it) before our driver-guide took us on a drive to some of the ruins. We chose not to visit the mines to minimize walking and instead went up to some ruined haciendas where we got the harrowing view down into a mine shaft. Careful!

Mineral de Pozos is the name of this pueblo rather than Pozos de Mineral as it is currently listed by tripadvisor. This old mining town that was almost totally abandoned is now coming back to life with an insurgence of expat Americans and Mexican nationals, mostly migrating from San Miguel, Queteraro, and Mexico City. It has recently been designated as a Pueblo Magico and seems to be on the rise as a true tourist destination. I have visited "Pozos" several times and find it to be a place of history and charm. It is tranquil, a place to enjoy and relax. The peace and quiet is a treasure that can be enjoyed at several high quality hotels and bed and breakfast venues. This is a very simple place, a no-frills venue, but has a charming quality that will not disappoint.

We drove over for a Sunday visit. What a great surprise! Great little ghost town - but not for long though. Go visit now while it is still quaint. Had a great lunch! Easy drive from San Miguel de Allende. Will return!

The ruins are worth the trip by themselves. Add to that the friendly people and some nice places to stay and you have a recipe for a great weekend. It's a small town so don't expect a zillion things to do but the place grows on you as you explore it.

We went to see the smelting ovens just outside of town and we told that there is an old fellow there that used to work the mines and if we give him a small tip, he'll tell what life was like as a miner. His tale was well worth listening to and the tip we gave him.

We even found ourselves asking if we could maybe live there; It's that appealing.

This little town seems just right for a movie set, maybe one of those movies named The Mexican or The Gringo. It's got Jerome, Arizona, written all over its face. But it's one heck of a lot easier to access than Jerome.

Wander around, let your imagination roam, admire the church's inspiring interior, and settle down for a tasty meal at Posada de las Minas.
