“5 Star Looks, 3 Star Service”
Reviewed October 23, 2009

The Good - This Hotel is currently undergoing renovations but already looks quite good. The general layout and design of the Hotel is interesting and quite attractive. The facilities and room furnishings are top quality. Newly renovated rooms include flat screen TV's and very modern well furnished bathrooms Most of the staff are easy to deal with and can speak english fairly well. The buffet breakfast is well planned and the Hotel in general is very clean. There is a very good shopping plaza across the street that contains electronic, clothing and grocery stores. A water purifier has been installed and they encourage the guests to use it (I did not).

The Bad - Internet connectivity is extremely poor, bad enough in fact that I often had to work from the Lobby through the night to accomplish work related tasks (and I don't require much bandwidth). There are no ethernet ports in the renovated rooms so you must rely on the poor wireless connection.

Three days into my two week stay I was forced to move rooms from the non-renovated room to a newly renovated one. Due to previous commitments I was required to check a large dollar value possession with the front desk. They arranged to move the rest of my luggage for me to the new room during my absence. When I returned they had lost the key to the locked room containing my equipment taking much of the night to get into the room and return my possessions. To their credit, they did get the locked room open that night and did not make me wait until the next day. When I arrived in my room I found someone else's luggage located there. When I brought it to the front desk I was told it was meant to be placed in my old room (the room they told me I had to vacate due to renovations).

They hosted a grand re-openning gala on a thursday during my stay. This Gala ran until midnight in the lobby with excessively loud music playing until after the fact (actually most nights the music can be heard even on the 18th floor up until midnight). They had room tours on levels populated with other guests, rooms being toured were beside ones containing guests. So guests were not able to sleep until the Gala was over which is not enjoyable when one is required to be awake for 5 or 6am. The Hotel did nothing to quiet over excited Gala attendees who continued to celebrate well into the early hours of the morning.

Attendants will bring Ice to the rooms in the evening which is a nice service, however they only knock once on the door and wait about twenty seconds before entering if they hear no response. You may wish to deadbolt your door to avoid having this occur when you are unable to reach the door due to circumstances out of your control.

If you get upset easily by such events as I have listed I would encourage you to find other accomodations

This is hotel is being renovated, meanwhile business is continued. Hard job, causing lots of noise and working people all around, although they do there best to avoid any disturbance, this is not always the case.

I stayed on the 21st floor, already renovted. A decent and well furnished, clean room, with a magnificent view. Sofar the good news

I have some serious complaints. Well, I am not a griper, always nitpicking. But this time I like to make some comments:
No free internet, I payed $14/day, for a lo speed wireless connection. This is really a shame for a five star hotel. Even in remote hotels as in Lima Peru or Beijng China in middel class Hotels we got internet in our rooms for free !! Furthermore a lot of things didn not work properly: the coffee machine, the curtains went loose, the toilet was clogged each time I did "relieve my bowels", the airco fan couldn't be switched off (which is very inconvenient during night). The worst I found the service. After repetitive complaints to the front desk, really nobody of the maintenance people did show up. !!.

So if you are free in your choice, don't go there. The food in the restaurant was OK, but very pricy.

Calling this Intercontinental Hotel a 5 star deluxe property is very to say the least not that easy and may only be valid once some serious face lift and upgrades in quality product as well as guest service has been achieved. We both found that this hotel does promises more via its brand name then it actually can deliver at present.

Upon check in we were asked if we would like to upgrade to their Club floor for only 75 USD more, (knowing the Intercontinental Club Floor from other of its property) we did agree expecting the same kind of value to be delivered, well we were proven that it is not the case. The upgrade was not worth the price, the true difference was in the only the higher floor, other service were (at least to us) not provided.

It is unfortunately that the Intercontinental Groups in Mexico (like in Panama City) did hold back for too long in upgrading their nation wide properties. Guest quality service did go down however most of all the Product quality (in relation to a deluxe hotel) simply does not meet today requirements.

The Entertainment and guest service provided in the Lobby Bar was the only high light in the operation, other then that the hotel operation just doe not meet expectations anywhere at all, outdated, used up and it did lose its shine.

Price / value levels are totally out of line, charge for an upgrade to the Club floor should go in line with additional Guest amenities and services. Sad to say, but we both have to agree in all aspects with most of the Reviews already published on Trip Advisor, the Intercontinental in GDL just does not meet the challenge and service needs of today’s business traveler, however still does pretend to do so using its Brand name.

This hotel is really not up to the Standarts of Intercontinental. The Hotel is old. Food at the Hotel is not great. Better food is availible right outside the hotel at Plaza del Sol.
Rooms are old and outdated. No free High Speed Internet and the Wireless Internet that is offered is slow

The hotel has problems.
The furniture is old. The closet door did not close properly.
The internet is expensive ($13.30/day), slow (hardly broad-band) and erratic (went off twice).
Everything is extra and expensive. Breakfast ($ 18), water ($7 for a small bottle), coffee kit in the room ($ 4). The coffe machine in the room did not work properly, anyway.
Staff courteous and helpful.
Needs investment to bring it to Intercontinental standards.
Today is not worth your money.

First, they insult you with all whatever comes to their mind. I paid in advance, had a company-guaranteed stay and still every day I had to find a new letter in my room from the front desk regarding what more I should pay. In the end they even wanted me to compansate for the currency exchange differences that occurred because I paid in advance (shouldnt have...). And above all, ALL my watches and my glasses got stolen. I would definitely not go there again.
