Owner description: This historic plaza, which thrived as a center for mariachi bands in the 19th century, still sees the occasional appearance of bands.

Having read that the Plaza was run down and dirty, and having found Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico DF in that condition, we decided to give it a miss. However wandering around one evening looking at what was going on we heard the music from some distance and headed over - and found a little gem.
It looks like it has had some work done in the recent past and is a smallish area with food outlets at one end, a stage at the other, and tables and chairs in between. We really enjoyed it, and all the people were extremely friendly. We saw a couple of mariachi bands before a show - which had 2 dancing couples and 2 singers - which we really enjoyed. The male singer was particularly good.
Understand that this is not a "made for tourists" spot, but we really enjoyed it.

A must visit at night time. Ask for MARTIN who own one of the restaurant, very gentle guy. He will help you to find a really good mariachi and will prepare a very good food. It is important to access and departure in taxi at night time for security reason

Plaza de los Mariachis has not been maintained well in the last 10 years. Mariachis still come here to practise their musical traditions and make some money. To truly appreciate this place you have to understand the Mexican culture's love of Mariachi music. The Plaza was created to give honor to the writer of the famously requested song "Guadalajara". His bust is there in the Plaza. The Annual Mariachi Festival is when you should try to visit Guadalajara; if you want to experience truly great Mariachi music. This plaza however, is good for some food, refreshment, and listening to local talent trying to make a living.

Don't come here to look for the rich and famous. Come here to see the people of Jalisco and the city of Guadalajara. Some are busy some are not. Some are relaxed while some are in a hurry. Some are dressed up some are in their working clothes. In the evening there may be music but there is something going on all the time.

Yes, the music was fun, and it might be a great place to sit down and have a beer outside while you listen. Still, the surrounding area is dirty, rundown, and populated by some questionable characters.
