“Good place to stay in Guadalajara center.”
Reviewed February 27, 2012

Main positive point of our stay here was convenient location in Guadalajara historical center. So all main city sites of interest such as Cathedral, Palacio del Gobierno, Colonial churches, artisan market, Teatro Degollado are in a walking distance from hotel. Av. 16 de Septiembre from where buses run to the main bus station is also nearby. The building itself is of a remarkable architecture with spacious coutyards and balconies, decorated with plants, Frida Callo"s portraits and bids in cages. Hotel offers different types of rooms. We had a twin, rather spatious room with windows looking over the Plaza. It supposed to be a balcony, but a french door leading there from the room was closed during our stay. Room furnishings were rather old and simple. There was tile floor in the room , as well in corridors and patios. Room had TV. There were complimentary bottle of water, soap and shampoo. Buffet breakfast cost extra 75 pesos and was served in one of the patios. I liked their pancakes and fruit. We got an additional discount for this accommodation from a travel agency where we booked it and were satisfied with our stay and price per quality ratio.

We have stayed at the San Francisco Plaza several times over the last eight years, but this time was our last. The hotel has become quite run down and though they are making efforts to spruce it up, it needs far more than a coat of paint. The rooms on the second floor facing the courtyard are tolerable, but most of the rest are dark, dingy and have peeled and cracked plaster, grimy floors and barely acceptable bathrooms. Many smell of mildew and the water system needs a complete overhaul to get rid of the strong alkali smell of the water. The neighbourhood is frankly a little scary and we are not comfortable walking to and from the central plazas after 7:00 or 8:00 at night. Finally, the service from the front desk has become decidedly indifferent. Such a shame, as we have enjoyed this hotel many times in the past, but won't be going back.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here, insist on a second floor room in the central section overlooking the inner...

A good choice for a moderately priced hotel near the historic district. Neighborhood is mostly commercial with many gold and silver buyers and a few local bars. The rooms are large, but the bathrooms are spartan and closets narrow. Courteous English-speaking reception staff and friendly service staff.

Room Tip: The rooms that face the courtyard where the restaurant is located are noisy starting about 6:00 a.m.

I always used to stay at Hotel Fenix, which I like a lot, but the service really started going downhill and the prices increased drastically so I sought out and found this little gem of a hotel. Beautiful lobby, friendly staff and great location. I felt safe and secure and will definately be back!

Room Tip: There is no elevator so I always try to stick to the second or third floor. I like views of the par...

PROS:
great location to historic downtown
great price
helpful staff

CONS:
no in room safe
hard mattress
noisy outside
no hairdryer

Overall, at first I was disappointed with not having an in room safe & hairdryer but after spending a few nights there I realized the things missing were not a big deal when we were paying a very low rate.

Yes, this is a older hotel but quite nice. Has genuine feel of being in mexico. The person at the desk could always speak pretty good english. within walking distance to liberty market, plazas and interesting site to see. Weekend brunch was excellent. We were one of the few tourists, other occupants were travelers of mexican decent...which to me says a lot. It rooms were clean and adequate. Would DEFINITELY stay there again. Booking was a little problem. Booked large rm with two beds. We were checked into room with one bed.... complained and immediately switched to room with 2 beds. Kinda had the feeling that I was booked into the hotel and was given an available room... like it shouldn't matter to me so long as I had a bed at the hotel. But as I said, when I complained, immediately given a very nice, LARGE room with 2 beds. AC worked wonderfullly.

Room Tip: tips... I would get the name of the person you are booking the room with and confirm before arriving...

This hotel has nice historic character and a lovely interior courtyard and a good location close to the sights of central Guadalajara.

Room was a good size and comfortable, although dark and a bit bland and lacking in character.

Some of the immediate area of the hotel is slightly dodgy. The little plaza on which the hotel is located is certainly not Guadalajara's best, with a few dodgy characters about. However, I did (single male traveller) walk into the city at night and back again several times and never felt truly unsafe in any way but the hotel staff can advise the best streets to take.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel for its historic character and convenient location close all of the historic central sights of the city.
