Owner description: Once an orphanage, this building now serves as a gallery of the famous murals of Jose Clemente Orozco.

The building itself was gorgeous and massive and the murals by Orozco were stunning. Apart from that however it was a bit lackluster. It was full of modern, post-modern, contemporary art which I personally do not like and they had some incredibly strange exhibitions. I luckily got in with a student discount (I'm not sure if it works with international student IDs, I have a Mexican one) so I didn't have to pay the full price which I thought was a bit much. All in all it was alright, the highlight is definitely the building itself and the murals rather than what's in it.

To truly be able to appreciate the murals, you need a tour guide.
Otherwise you may miss the story the murals are telling and some of the magic created in the murals perspective. Enjoy !!

A great building, designated a UNESCO site, plus outstanding murals by Jose Clemente Orozcu, one of the most important Mexican muralists. "Man of Fire", perhaps his greatest achievement, adorns the central ceiling of this magnificent building. Many of his other significant murals are on the walls of the central structure, a testament to his strong views about social struggles of humanity. The building itself is a fine example of classic architecture, with classic Doric columns, 23 courtyards, soaring arches, and vaulted ceilings. A visit to Guadalajara would not be complete without a few hours at this wonderful place. Tuesday admission is free, and you can wander and explore for hours by yourself. However, the best way to understand and appreciate the murals and the building is to ask the office for a private tour guide, either in Spanish or English. No charge for 30-40 minutes, but a 100 peso tip is always welcome. Ruben was our English-speaking guide, and his insights made the afternoon very special. Don't overlook the very nice bookshop.

The building structure is as magnificent as you can imagine, but the paintings inside are even more wonderful.

The main attraction here are the Ozcuro murals and the building itself, we thought the other art exhibitions were average. If we had come any other day and paid the entry fee I think we would have been a little disappointed as you can see his other murals for free at the Government palace and at the art museum at the University.
That being said the murals are amazing as is the building.
