This 400 year old hotel is moderately-priced, incredibly charming and centrally-located near many historical sights. If you enjoy walking to cafes, shopping and nightlife, this is the place to stay. The expansive lobby features a small bar with live Mariachi and singers for guests to enjoy. Climb the impressive staircase (or take the lovely antique elevator) to the terraza for views of the city, especially gorgeous at sunset. The reception and staff are warm and welcoming. Need something? Just ask. They are happy to oblige or help. The room I stayed in was small and clean with a giant closet, high ceilings and efficient bathroom - perfect for the solo traveler. Plus, free strong Wi-Fi and water service. Located in the back of the hotel, my room windows opened to a wall: not quite scenic, but enough to let in light and fresh air. The adjacent (and fun) discotheque Maxim's features live music and is open until 4:00 am. Overall, I recommended Hotel Frances for travelers seeking a central location with historical charm, and a good price with great service.
