We have just returned from our trip to Zihuatanejo. We were there for 9 days and we tried many resturants: La Gula, La Casa que canta, Espuma, Carpaccio, Agave, etc and for us, this one was the best. Great food, very well prepared and cooked and excellent service. This restaurant was one of the best we have ever tried in our lives!!

I have eaten here twice.
The owners are quite welcoming and polite.
All food is made with fresh ingredients and care and the owners call it "slow food".
The restaurant is upstairs so nice to sit at a table by the railing and watch the goings on in this quite neighborhood by the lovely beach walk.

Not only stunningly good, but stunningly surprising that it is not mentioned more often in forums such as Tripadvisor.

Creative and out of the ordinary, the care this restaurant takes with their food preparation, presentation, service and atmosphere is amazing. La Gula, other than its location on Playa Madera's Restaurant Row, would not be out of place in cities like New York or San Francisco.

While a touch pricier than some of the other surrounding venues, it is well worth every peso. We ate here twice over the course of a week (once a full dinner; the second time an assortment of appetizers).

A must not to miss when in Zhihua.

My wife and I found this place on a recent trip to Zihuatanejo. We loved it so much we ate there 2 more times before our week-long vacation was over. It is away from the "touristy" crowds of Ixtapa, and this is a major plus. The open-air seating suits Zihuatanejo's terrific climate, and the elevated views of the surrounding area are subtly beautiful. The restaurant is located on a pretty residential street not far from Zihuatanejo’s “Playa Madera,” and the location helps complete the overall authenticity of the place.

As nice as the location of this restaurant is, the food is, of course, what makes it stand out. My wife and I had only appetizers the first time we were there and enjoyed everything we ordered. After going back twice more for a more formal dinner we were surprised to find that, while everything we had was enjoyable, quite a few of the dishes we tried were absolutely fantastic. Admittedly, some of the items on the menu seemed like odd combinations, but Chef Jose Luis carefully blends seemingly different flavors and produces some very interesting, and absolutely delicious, results. The food is distinctly Mexican, but with Chef Jose Luis' own interpretations, his dishes become something altogether unique and were a true joy to discover.

La Gula has other good qualities: the service was friendly and attentive, there was soothing live music 2 of the 3 nights we were there, and when we sent our regards to the Chef the last night we were there, Chef Jose Luis happily came out from his open kitchen to welcome us and talked to us about his dishes and his experiences around the world.

Overall my wife and I found Zihuatanejo to be a charming place; it has maintained it's small-town identity despite being a stone's throw away from the bustling streets and crowded beaches of Ixtapa, and La Gula was certainly one of our trip's highlights. I almost hope the restaurant won't be too "discovered" when we return, but a place like this deserves some attention. Bravo.
