Casa Cuitlateca
Ranked #27 of 78 Hotels in Zihuatanejo
Reviewed March 21, 2010

We just returned from a week in Zihuatanejo with another couple, and we had a wonderful time, enhanced by the accommodations and the great service at Casa Cuitlateca. We were met at the airport by Alfredo, and from that moment on we felt very at home. The accommodations are great, and the hotel has a casual elegance about it, with beautiful Mexican artesania and furnishings. All the staff is attentive and very friendly. Breakfast is included and is beautifully prepared, with a wonderful variety of choices. Our room was always cleaned by the time we returned from breakfast. All the guests were friendly and interesting. We felt like we were at home with friends. Terry the owner, Alfredo, and Amador were a wealth of knowledge about things to do, restaurant recommendations were spot on. They made arrangements for a tour and for fishing - and those people were great too. We were sorry that our week was over so soon!

After being told that we were going to be in Houston overnight due to an airplane malfunction we called Casa Cuitlateca to tell them that we would be 24 hours later than expected. Barbara the reservationist told Vicki that was not a problem. We asked if another night was available due to not getting there on Friday. She told us that would work but we would have to have a different room the last two nights. Not a problem we said..

At 11 a.m. as we were driving up the steep driveway to the Casa, I was looking around and thinking to myself, "Man this looks sweet!" The cabbie got our bags out of the car and we met Amadore. He took us to our room. As Vicki and I walked into the room she turns around with big tears streaming down her cheeks and says, "This is the most beautiful room that we have ever stayed in-and the view is gorgeous!" Amadore just smiled and said he will see us when we get unpacked. Well it kept getting better from there. The room had a king bed that was extremely comfortable, as were the pillows.

The bed was sitting on the 2nd tier of the room overlooking a two step lower area for sitting with a small refrigerator and a roomy desk area. The veranda had two chairs and a nice table along with a hammock and around the corner was a mattress that was incredible for a nice siesta or.....!!! The bathroom sinks were located at the "top" of the room. Through a door was the toilet and a shower big enough to have one showering and the other drying off. The view from the veranda was absolutely stunning. We were 150' above the bay. The city was slightly to the right, the bay straight out and to the left, the Pacific. There was another room above us and above that was an area for sunbathing, massage or just hanging out. Below us was the open air kitchen ran by Sylvia. She knew her way around the kitchen.

So we get organized and into our shorts and t shirts and as we came downstairs to look around, we were met by Amadore asking if he could make us a Welcome to the Casa drink. I said, "Margarita on the rocks." With Salt? For sure! And for you he asked Vicki? She said "Dos!" I tell you this guy had that drink down. Very tasty! He was the daytime go to guy. We had our own private butler, bartender and the best question and answer man.

The deck area, which is straight out from the kitchen and eating area, has 4 chaise lounges sitting on it that were very comfortable. They have a basket with large beach towels that you can use to lay on or to use for drying off after a dip in the infinity pool. A bit on the cool side and it would take a couple of moments to adjust to the water, but after being on the beach and walking from the beach up to the hotel, the pool is just what the Dr. ordered. After a couple of days I could just move quickly into the pool and view all of Zihuatanejo.

One drawback is that the Casa is 125 stairs down to the road or up from the road, depending on which way you were going. Albeit, that was small potatoes compared to the ammenities of the Casa. A cab ride to or from town was approximately $3 American. After walking to town, drinking and eating, the taxi ride was a nice compliment to the evening. You want to get the driver to bring you all the way up the driveway.

The coffee was usually brewing around 7:15 or so and breakfast started at 8. The menu was large and good. Eggs, omelets, rice and bean, fried potatoes, fruit w/or w/o yogurt, pancakes, waffles and the list goes on. A very nice thing was usually by the time breakfast was eaten your room was made up by Mariam. She took good care of keeping the Casa clean. During the day the kitchen was open and Sylvia was doing her thing; Sopas, nachos, quesadillas or a club sandwich. In the evening the tables were moved in place of the lounge chairs and they offered a dinner that I hear was pretty good. We did not eat dinner there due to the many great restaurants in ZIH. We did spend a couple very nice nights sitting in the bar area looking at the lights of the city and visiting with Alfredo, he was the night go to guy. He also knew his way around the libation area; Pina Colada made with cinnamon or a cream drink. Throw a slow cd on the player and dance cheek to cheek and there could be some nice magic happening. We did get the opportunity to stay in the honeymoon suite for two nights. Really nice and secluded. Private veranda, BIG bathroom with a view of the Bay from the shower. Good A/C, cold refrigerator. I would now and then sit and visit with Terry. We would talk about an American in Mexico or whatever the wind would blow toward us. He told me that when people stay at the Casa, he wants them to feel like they are family. We did. There was also a community area with a flat screen and games. I would recommend this hotel to anyone I know.

We deliberately chose a place that was not "turisty", beautiful, yet rustic. From the moment we left the taxi, we were taken with the surroundings. The staff is very attentive. Terry, Alfredo, Amador, and Sylvia all catered to our needs. We stayed a total of 10 days and the couples we met were very pleasant. Can't say enough about this place - beautiful, serene surroundings amidst lush and verdant grounds. We took an early morning stroll (6 am) to the pier as the fishermen were arriving with their catch. We purchased some fish which Alfredo and Sylvia prepared into a succulent ceviche.

We have stayed in some splendid places, but Casa Cuitlateca rightfully takes its place at the top of the list. We knew nothing about the hotel, but chose it based on recommendations like the one I am writing now. If we expected x, then we got x + 10 both at the hotel and the location in general. The high-on-the-hill setting is beautiful beyond belief, the views stunning, the rooms spacious and comfortable. The level of service was just right - there when we needed it - but otherwise we were left alone. The staff were lovely beyond compare: kind and helpful, anxious to please. There are only five rooms and we met all the other guests. Most - as we will be - are repeat customers who would not dream of going anywhere else in Zihuatanejo. A late breakfast on the terrace after a morning walk was our favorite meal of the day. Dinner can be arranged at the Casa Cuitlateca (those who did were very happy) or you can visit any number of local restaurants within a short walk. I don't usually post reviews of places I visit, but the Casa Cuitlateca is truly exceptional. We can't wait to go back.

My wife and I just spent a memorable week at one of the nicest places that we have ever stayed at, and we have travelled a lot.
The staff were the best, the view outstanding and the beds were heavenly. The only complaint I have is that we didn't stay longer. We hope to go back next year.

My boyfriend and I stayed there for 4 nites before joining the rest of the wedding party at the next villa next door. The staff at Casa Cuitlateca were so attentive and friendly. We were upgraded since we were the only guests at that time. We hardly had to use taxis since the staff happily offered us a ride while they were running their own errands.

The pool was amazing - a really nice romantic getaway. We even helped with the design of the landscape.

I absolutely recommend this place.

Super attentive staff. In particular Alfredo for his great margaritas and Sylvia for her breakfasts and afternoon snacks and Amador for his attentive service.
The view is spectacular and they're doing landscaping work on the property to make it even more beautiful. Only 5 rooms and we'd recommend Guerraro for it's view of the bay.
