“Lovely”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2010

The Catalina isn't the newest or the splashiest resort on Playa La Ropa, but it is authentic, charming, and friendly. We stayed in a Loma Linda suite, and it was clean and well taken care of. We weren't able to use the balcony because it was so hot outside, but the view was breathtaking, and I'm sure it would be lovely during the cooler months.

We loved the restaurant, particularly the breakfasts, and we decided that they had the best chips in guacamole in all of Zihuat. The Sunset bar was delightful and the view couldn't be beat (along with 2 for 1 margaritas).

We were lucky enough to be at the hotel when they released all of the baby sea turtles into the sea that the staff had been caring for. I'll never forget the sight of those tiny creatures making their way into the Pacific Ocean.

The staff was also very tolerant of my bad Spanish, and they pretended like they could understand me, unlike the folks in Mexico City.

I recommend this hotel for anyone who is looking for a hotel with an authentic, non-corporate feel, is able to walk 200+ steps uphill, and is tolerant of a few cosmetic flaws like rebar, in-house lizards, and slightly dated decor.

We've been to Zihuatanejo many times before but had never considered Catalina becasue of its age. Friends invited us to the sunset bar last year and we fell in love with Catalina and tried it this year. WOW! We stayed in a Linda Vista Suite and it could not have been better. The rooms are large, kept clean and up to date. Our balcony with a view of the bay through the "jungle" foliage was incredible. The staff is nothing short of fantastic. Others have commented on the steps; Yup there's a bunch of 'em. Somewhere just north of 250 all the way to the top. I'm not quite ancient, but getting close and don't excercise--not a big deal. After a couple of days of getting used to the heat, I wouldn't say it was a piece of cake, but it was only a minor annoyance. The beach palapas are easily the nicest on La Ropa. Lots of them, widely separated, never crowded. We've already reserved for next year. It took us quite a few years to find this gem, I wish we had found it earlier. Another positive for me is that, unlike many of the hotels in the area, it is locally owned. I would much rather have all of my $$ stay in the local economy than for example have Intrawest, or the Tides send the profits to a foreign corporation.

My favorite hotel ever, although not real fancy. HUGE Rooms, huge private balconies, and the most amazing view ever. Very friendly service. Very clean and also very dated. (not new but very cool Old Mexico:)

We stayed for 4 nights and wish we could have stayed longer. The hotel is on a very beautiful beach. The pool was lovely and uncrowded. The palapas (lounge chairs and tables) at the beach are the most comfortable setting, and the best place to be on Playa La Ropa beach in our opinion. The staff was wonderful, helpful, and friendly. The food was great. We felt very safe and secure there.

Yes, there are many stairs and our calf muscles got a little sore. And the mattresses were rather hard. But these were minor compromises for us, and well worth it for such a great place to be. If you have little children or older people, it might be unsafe to try and use the steps. You can ask the front desk to take you down to the beach on a golf cart, and they will take care of you.

The hotel has character and is very relaxed and low key. You probably shouldn't stay here if you prefer to be in huge, fancy full service hotels with sterile elegance.

We highly recommend the Catalina and will go there again when we can afford the airfare to Zihuatanejo.

This is one of the older hotels on Playa del Ropa. It was very clean, comfortable and roomy, with a friendly and helpful staff. Very affordable. Full breakfast was included. View and setting were spectacular. No bugs. Air conditioning in many rooms and fans everywhere. This was my first trip to Mexico, and I will definitely return and recommend this place to family and friends. Zihua is a real working town, not just another Las Vegas on the beach. Lots of fun beach & watersport activities if your want. Also great for a quiet tropical getaway.

We had a simple but spacious room with a private hammock-equipped porch facing the bay. Just outside was an infinity pool and steps down to the beach. On the beach there's a private cantina where kids can borrow a boogie board. Playa la Ropa is wonderful for swimming, building sand castles or playing in the (relatively) gentle surf. The staff even broods sea turtle eggs in a protected spot and releases the hatchlings in the evening, 350 in the 3 days we were here. Up stairs is the dining room where the food is quite tasty. You can take a taxi into town, save money by waiting for the camione, or do what a lot of regulars do, which is walk. Some people have been coming here for many years, and we found it to be a very friendly place. It's perhaps not as fancy as some of the newer hotels, and there are quite a few stairs to climb, but it's a wonderful environment, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and I have very fond memories of Catalina Beach Resort. I can assure you, my 10-year-old is ready to go back and play in those waves right now!

This 60 year old hotel is the very best of Mexico; the rooms are all beautiful; the private beach is the best on Playa de Ropa in Zihua; the food is great and all of the staff are wonderful; Eva, the owner is a most gracious host; you'll never find another place like this!
