We traveled to Hotel Irma with low expectations because it was ranked a one-star hotel. The only reason I can see it derserves this rank is because the hotel is located on a large hill. We walked a lot through out the day exploring beaches and town. Sometimes it was tough to make the hill. But whenever we did not want another workout the taxis were always near by, for two dollars you can get a ride most anywhere you like.
The hotel itself is very nice, clean and a friendly helpful staff. We ate at the restrauant at least once a day, the staff would bring drinks and snacks to you around the pool. Sometimes it was hard to get a lounge chair, a few people brought floaters for in the pool. That was a great idea, and I will be doing this next year. The hotel is smaller so it was easy to make friendships with other guests. We had a late flight out so the hotel had a hospitality room in which we could clean up after a long day in the sun, before heading to the airport. Overall we had a great experience.

Just return 3-18-05 from Irma, first trip to Z. Irma is a quaint & very service friendly Hotel. No reasonable traveler could complain about Irma at its cost. I have a grumble or two but I have those every day of my life....it is a real world. I have seen chat boards talk about ants, hard beds, climbing the hill, not beachfront and cold showers Oh sure, we have all stayed in bigger - ocean/beachfront properties with fancier restuarants but the view of the bay from poolside is worth the price. The view...oh wow....150-200 feet above crashing waves. The staff is wonderful. The hill is good exercise for all of us pudgy, over-eating travelers and a casual stoll to the boardwalk along the beach or the streets to downtown. We love the beach and missed walking directly into the ocean but for a $3 cab or boat ride, you are on a wonderful beach @ La Ropa or Las Gatas. The beds just the way I like em. If staying on La Ropa beach it is a taxi to town every time or about anywhere....Irma is a walk away to countless restuarants, downtown entertainment and a Blues club. Sunday nite is like the old time on the downtown square. All families gather for downtown entertainment and merriment. I would recommend trying to get rooms 101 - 105, they are poolside and let the shower run for 5 minutes, it will heat up. Irma is brightly colored, clean, extremely service friendly. All the guest are good hearted souls. If you want a very good return for the budget, Irma is a fine choice. It met or exceeded everyone's expectations that we spoke with.

The service was excellent. When you go to the resturaunt, ask for Leo, he was a great help. He told us where to eat and what we needed to see and do during our stay. Take a taxi to the pier in Ixtapa and go on a snorkeling trip. If you find someone as great as Leo, he spent his day off showing us around and took us to Petetlan, the city of gold. Little to no tourists with a beautiful chruch. Walk from Hotel Irma to La Playa del Ropa, you can check out the crocodil on the beach, ask the locals, they will show you, if you want. The people of Zihuatanejo are wonderful. And if you have a strong enough stomach, you have to go the the market where the locals do there shopping. It is downtown Zihuat, the workers at the desk can tell you how to get there, and walk, it isnt far. It is amazing and you will see how lucky we are to live in America. Have a wonderful trip and dont miss out on any of these things!!!

Hotel Irma is a lovely hotel - much nicer than I expected given its budget price. The rooms were clean and towels replenished daily. Rooms all face the ocean and have a great view because the hotel is at the top of a hill. Some rooms have little patios, others have balconies - ours had a small balcony on the third story terrace, right by the cold water hot tub (use it during the day!) There are two small but perfectly adequate pools and a nice little restaurant. The beds are hard (in my experience all beds in Mexico are hard unless you're staying at an American hotel), but the sheets are clean. There are a bunch of stairs down to the ocean and in the hotel itself, but nothing an able-bodied person shouldn't be able to handle (would be a difficult place for an elderly or disabled person, though).

If you have a late flight, you can check out of your room and then ask for a key to another room to shower before you leave for the airport. They gave us access to one of the interior, non-remodeled rooms just so we could use the shower. Thought that was very nice. I would go back to the Hotel Irma and Zihua in a minute - the place was just beautiful.
