If you practice yoga, and are looking for a great class with a stunning venue in Zehuatenejo, check out Hotel Irma.
Pilar, the instructor, teaches in English, and is very energetic and precise in her teaching methods. She offers challenging and creative poses.
Classes are held on the shady side of the bay in the cool of the morning, a perfect way to begin the day in paradise!

We stayed at the Hotel Irma as a result of booking a package through Delta Airlines and are truly glad we did. First, the hotel and restaurant staff are friendly, professional, courteous, and helpful. Whether it involved directing us to an area attraction or taking our order for drinks by the pool, they exceeded our expectations. The hotel itself is well located and well maintained. Our ocean view room was large and comfortable. Some other reviews cited the "hard" beds. We would call them firm, and we found that we had no problems sleeping. Some reviews talked about the climb that is required to get to the hotel, but, again, we did not see the climb as excessive (we are in our 60s). We walked to the beach, the central shopping area, and the pier. When we took some longer trips, the front desk notified one of the readily available cabs. The hotel is a good, affordable choice.

We have stayed here multiple times. Not fancy, but it is clean, secure, and reasonably priced for beachfront property. Ignore the fact that it's 90 some steps down to the beach, as you have a million dollar view from most rooms, the pools, bar and restaurant. There are lots of stairs and no elevators. There are 2 pools next to each other, the one pool works for kids and the second is too deep for the kiddies. There's a restaurant that serves reasonable, overpriced food. There's one bar, serving overpriced drinks made with cheap bar liquor and a limited choice of beers. We call the margaritas "jet fuel."

The guests are a combination of returning regulars from US, Canada and Mexican families. Very easy to converse with your fellow guests as it is a very relaxed, family oriented atmosphere. There are few guests in the 18 to 25 age group, not a good spot for spring breakers.

You are walking distance to downtown and there are ample bars and restaurants within a few blocks. Cab fare is minimal to and from downtown. If you do walk to downtown, you don't have to worry about getting bumped on the head... If it's later in the evening, opt for the cheap cab.

My wife and daughter and I stayed at the Irma for 4 nights in early January. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful--and a lot of fun, particularly if you try out your Spanish. There are two nice swimming poolis, one the "infinity" type, with a spectacular biew of the bayfront. We had breakfast included in our rate --a substantial "American" breakfast with Mexican touches (beans, tortillas, etc.). Very filling, and inclusive of either fresh juice or fresh sliced fruit. My one dinner off the menu (chicken) was a little disappointing, but on another night they cooked the fish we caught for twenty bucks and served it nicely. Happy hour is a big (and good) deal here--two for one margs, rum punches etc. Prices are reasonable for food and drink even outside of happy hour. Our room was basic: average size, small bayview balcony, very small TV with a couple of US channels in English (like CNN). The bathroom featured a door that was open at the top--a little weird, but it makes it easy for your spouse to hand you your charging cellphone! The beds are typical Mexican "firm" -- are they designed for penitent monks? Still, they are not as hard as the ones at some other Mexican hotels I've stayed at. (One day someone will explain to me this Mexican fetish with cement mattresses). Staff here are not very English proficient, even at the front desk, so I ended up communicating in Spanish almost exclusively. It is an easy 10 minute walk into town (downhill) but a little more arduous on the way back (uphill). There is a short but extremely steep walk up to the main highway above the hotel that leads to some nearby fine restaurants (including the one at the famous hotel La Casa Que Canta). But cabs are so cheap here-- (25 pesos (two bucks) gets you and your family anywhere within the town)-- that we just hailed them when we were beat (but do confirm the rate first). One other warning to the elderly or unfit--upper floor rooms involve many stairs with no elevator. There is also a long stairway down to the beach below the hotel. All in all, the Irma is a good choice if you are not seeking super luxury at a price (see La Casa Que Canta, above, for that), but are not willing to rough it either.

Room Tip: Stay on a lower floor if you don't like climbing stairs. There seemed to be some cabana-type roo...

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Irma in the first week in December 2012. We had an oceanview room overlooking the town and the bay. Beautiful location with steps down to the seawall and beach. The restaurant has excellent food and cooked the fish I caught with a handline off the seawall. Great, friendly service from all the employees and will stay there again. The town is safe and the walk into town takes about 10 minutes along the seawall and beach. Last time I was here I stayed in Ixtapa but we liked staying in the town with all the shops, restaurants and interesting residents. The town is actually a small city with a population of about 125,000. We met people from Grand Forks, BC that had rented a room with a kitchenette at the Hotel Monarch for $400/Mo. and a teacher who was renting a two bedroom furnished apartment for the winter for $320/Mo. One week was too short for us. We love this place! We could easily live here for the winter and not get bored. They have a Scotiabank that I used without a service charge. Beer on the beach costs about 18 pesos[$1.40US] and a fish lunch or dinner for around $6-$10. Rosie's Restaurant has a Red Snapper dinner with all trimmings for about $12US. It's situated on a beautiful beach[Playa Ropa] just south of town. The rooms in the Hotel Irma were extra clean and we tipped the maid 20 pesos per day. Each maid would form the towels into swans or hearts with rose petals sprinkled around it. We were very impressed with all the staff who made our vacation a trip to remember. We brought our own coffee maker and bought a cooler from OXXO[7eleven equivalent]. We had a king size bed that was comfortable so I don't know why other writers complained. Airconditioning worked well but you had to leave it on all the time to be effective. Zihuatanejo is a hot place and higher humidity than the east coast. This is now our favourite place in Mexico. We got a great price for the trip and hotel through Expedia. $700 for air and hotel each including tax from Vancouver BC Canada. The prices are better before the Christmas rush.
Regards,
Richard Schnoor, Tsawwassen BC

Hotel Irma is in the right location to walk to town and/or La Ropa beach area. The Hotel is clean and the service was great. The air conditioning worked so well be had to actually turn it down. Our room #30 looked straight out over the bay, we couldn't have asked for a better view. In the mornings you could smell the bacon cooking it was great. Food was excellent as were the drinks. We will be going back year after year.

Room Tip: You can'g go wrong with any of the rooms at Irma as they all have ocean view, however we really...

A wonderful property in terms of location, the facilities, and the staff. It is ideally situated with a spectacular view of the city from their well maintained pool. Conveniently located, well maintained. You can easily catch the bus for six and half pesos, or walk. The La Ropa/Centro bus will take you right downtown, and when you get back on, if you tell the bus driver you want to go to the Irma, he will drop you off at the taxi stop on the top of the hill above the Hotel. if you walk, go down to the Cyber Cafe (excellent tacos) and cross over the canal bridge there- the lighting is much better and you avoid a rather marginal block or so. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and as noted elsewhere, they are air conditioned and you can hear the ocean waves (limited in terms of size here-you have to go much further north to surf). The music in the restaurant is great- new age pan flute stuff. Very soothing and a welcome change.

Do not opt for the breakfast unless you like an endless variety of mexican egg dishes or prefab waffles. The lunch menu was quite tasty, however, in terms of the salads. We did not eat dinner here during our 12 days, however.

Despite promises to guests for the past three years, there are no refrigerators in the rooms. The staff will provide you with a foam box and ice if you complain. The road from Irma, both down and up is very steep, especially the one to the taxi and bus stop above the Hotel.

The biggest downside to the Hotel is that there are NO elevators, and the beds are the old box springs on concrete Mexican special. I loved the explanation of the manager this morning at Yoga (which you have to pay 100 pesos for). "They are so new, they are not broken in yet". We used the old trick of throwing the "mattress" from one bed on top of the other with some relief.

Room Tip: All rooms face the bay and ocean, but see my note about no elevator. They typically do not pay a lo...
