“Beautiful grounds, exceptional food, best service I've ever experienced”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

Viceroy Zihuatanejo was the most relaxing vacation I've ever experienced. Want a private dinner? They will set a table, white linens, candles, etc. at a place of your choosing . . . under a palm tree, on the beach under the stars, or just in your room. Very romantic. Their restaurants will seat you indoors (open air) or on the beach, and live music is usually arranged (ever see a musician play a harp with his right hand while playing a keyboard with his left hand? Their musicians are talented!). Their restaurants provide a menu with a diverse selection, and they still prepare nearly anything (not on the menu) if you just hint about it. For example Wifey ordered home made ice cream for desert, and they served it in a chocolate dish; she smiled at the presentation, and commented (under her breath) that fried bannanas would be good with this (not on the menu), and minutes later she was served fried bannanas. And the taste and presentation of the food speaks volumes of their chef's training, experience, and skills.

I just cannot say enough about their service and attention to detail. Sitting at the bar and want a pool towel? They will immediately provide one. Want a drink at poolside? They will bring it. Coffee delivered to your room every morning at a pre-determined time if you like (they leave it on a provided shelf just outside your door, so you won't be woken up).

Viceroy Zihuatanejo is perfect for couples wanting a stressfree and romantic vacation. Very well suited for a honeymoon. Yet, it still has suitable accommodations for families (beach cottage, for example).

This resort comes with my highest recommendations.

My husband and I took our two kids to Zihua for spring break. We spent a lot of time at Playa La Ropa. We had drinks at the beach bar at Viceroy one afternoon. The bartender was really great. The atmosphere was perfect. Tamarind margarita was delicious!

Just had a great 5 night stay at the hotel and it was amazing. Room was really nice (beach suite), food was great (specially the pulpos al ajillo con arroz), really friendly and attentive staff, great, quiet location and a really nice spa (ask for Modesta). Really enjoyed it!

Room Tip: Beach suites are amazing!

We stayed for six nights at a Laguna Suite over Holy Week which is apparently the busiest period in this area since all of Mexico is on Holiday. The private beach was the best and although we had to pay 30 dollars per day to occupy a swinging bed at the front row we didt it gladly because it was really the best way to enjoy the beach. The food was extraordinary, we enjoyed all our meals at the hotel and could not get enough of the delicious dishes they offer. We loved also the building still preserves a local flavour and we appreciated the fact that most of the personnel have been working there for decades. We had two treatments at the Spa (the sweedish massage for 80 minutes) and we absolutely enjoy them as well as the clean massage beds the aromatic oils and the nice ammenities. It is true that the hotel is expensive if you compare it to other places in Playa la Ropa, however there is nothing in the surroundings that compare to the standards of teh Viceroy. On our opinion is worthwile.

Room Tip: Tha Laguna Suites are worth every penny. You have your own private little pool, the bathroom is spac...

I agree with the travelers that have stayed here this is my 2nd time and its a fabulous resort from the food, service, and location it is simply...perfect!

Please don't post opinions about a hotel you have not stayed in, if you want to lay at the chairs you could of paid $ 25.00 for a day pass, it makes me upset to read a bad review about this resort but after reading your post "davidthetraveler" it is not fair to write a review when you did not stay and pay for the luxury of this hotel. It is a very beautiful amazing service and great food! If you stay you will realize it is worth every penny!

I love this hotel it's my number 2 on my top 10! My first place is the one and only Palmilla in Cabo!

See you next year!

First off I want to make it clear that we did not stay at this apparently wonderful, expensive hotel. Instead, my wife and I were walking on the beach in front of the hotel property when we saw two people that we had met casually lounging on the chairs on the property on the beach. We went over to chat and they suggested that we just use the loungers next to them as all of the loungers were empty. Since we knew we were on hotel property we felt we should get permission before doing so. We asked 3 staff members who all thought it was OK so we sat on the loungers. A very nice staff member came up and offered us towels, which we refused, and then a waiter came up to us and asked if we wanted a drink. Over the period of an hour and a half which we were there we had 3 beers in total and asked the waiter for our bill. The bill came to $775 pesos!! When we looked at the bill we saw that we had been charged $640 pesos for 'rent' of the chairs. Nobody had ever mentioned this to us or we would have never stayed there for even a minute. We paid our bill without protest and decided we would return the next day to discuss our bill with management as we had an appointment that we had to attend.

The next day we went back to the hotel and asked to speak to the manager. The very polite gentleman on the front desk asked if he could help. We told him our story and he said he'd be right back. After 10 or 15 minutes he returned and said we'd have to talk to the Food and Services manager. When that person came to talk to us he said he'd have to talk to the waiter. The waiter had little or no recollection of us, thinking we were on a different lounger, that there were 4 of us ( our acquaintances left their lounger 5 or 10 minutes after we arrived) etc. After we set the scenario correctly the food and services manager said he would need to talk to the general manager who was apparently not in and could we come back the next day to see what the resolution was. We indicated it was an arduous walk for us to be there and could he please call us at our hotel. We gave him our information and he promised to call. He didn't. In short, we felt that we were taken advantage of. We were never told of any extra charges or we would never had stayed. This may be a wonderful place but a word of warning, regardless of how inviting those loungers look, unless you are prepared to pay an outrageous amount, do not sit on them. Go a few steps further down the beach and get on the loungers that you pay $50 pesos for. We had even thought this might be a place we'd like to stay at on our next visit to Zihuatanejo. After this episode, we think we'll pass.

We stayed for 4 nights at the Viceroy and really enjoyed ourselves. We were in 2 bedroom/2 bath Lagoon Suite, which was perfect for our family of 4. The staff at The Viceroy were incredibly, always quit and willing to fulfill any requests. We enjoyed our time at the beach and the excursions we booked through the property as well. The food was absolutely excellent, much better than we expected. We have stayed at The Viceroy Anguilla several times, and I do believe that some money needs to be put into the Zihua property to bring it up to the level of the Anguilla property - there is not much to do after dinner time and the buildings, pools, etc seem to be quite old. I would recommend spending 1/2 a day exploring the town of Zihua, which was a pleasant surprise during our trip. If you're going for pure relaxation, this is the perfect spot!

Room Tip: Beach Suites lack privacy, I would recommend the Lagoon Suites.
