“Food and service disappointing”
Reviewed December 25, 2011

Nice restaurant. Food was just ordinary and service barely adequate. Would not recommend it or ever go back.

“Breathtaking view and excellent food”
Reviewed December 24, 2011

We went to Ristorante il Mare based on a recommendation from our hotel and we were not disappointed. The view of the bay is breathtaking (we had a table right at the edge) and the food was outstanding. The lobster fettucine was perfectly prepared and everything, including the service, was fantastic. Highly recommended.

“Not the best”
Reviewed December 6, 2011

The view is beautiful but the food was average at best and the service was not much better. There were only two other tables with diners but our waiter was more interested in talking to his coworkers than in waiting on his table. We will not go back.

“Great view, but the food is just average . . . not as good as 2 years ago.”
Reviewed December 2, 2011

Since we found Il Mare two years ago and enjoyed two wonderful meals there, we were anxious for a return visit. This time we went on the highly-touted Wednesday Greek Night.

My partner and I both opted for the pricey rack of lamb: What could be more Greek? Our two salads were crispy and relatively flavorful but (though differently defined) were practically identical in appearance. The meat was juicy, but rather flavorless, and was accompanied by bitter spinich that even extra butter could not make palatable. The other vegetables were just steamed and nothing special either. We had a glass of house wine that was fine, but also overpriced.

Service was fine, but perfuctory at best.

If our experience is at all typical, perhaps Il Mare should reassess its cusine and not rely so much on its view and atmosphere alone..

“Bay Front with Great Quality Food and Fun!”
Reviewed November 30, 2011

Those who have traveled repeatedly to Zihuatanejo, and there are many, as Zihuatanejo is the # 1 return destination in Mexico, have probably made il Mare the #1 restaurant folks return to in Zih. Ristorante Italiano, il Mare, really sets the stage for a memorable lunch or dinner with music, bay view, excellent customer service, and quality food. The staff is attentive and professional; and if the owners Fernando and Belen are there, it is an extra special treat as they share much joy, humor, and passion for fine food and drink with their patrons, to create a wonderful and unique dining experience. The view from il Mare is fabulous, night or day. One can see all the action on the bay, plus the mountains and town of Zih. Everything on the menu is well prepared and fresh. Salad lovers have eight to choose from, all clean, crisp, and flavorful. No worries about eating fresh veggies here. Concerned for the health and enjoyment of their guests extra precautions are taken to properly wash and prepare all fresh fruits and produce. Some of my favorite salads are the seafood, Caprese, and mixed salad. The mixed salad uses an assortment of greens, tomatos, cucumbers, black olives, walnuts, and raisins, tossed with a light, sweet-tart, house made dressing. Appetizers and antipasti include grilled octopus with olive oil, wine vinegar, and herbs; the beef or tuna Carpacio, is thinly sliced and marinated in olive oil, lime, capers, onions, and herbs; and the Prosciutto and Melon, Bruscheta, and calamari - grilled or fried - rounds out the great list of starters. I also enjoy the Minestrone soup and a side of mashed potatoes, when I'm in the mood for comfort food. The main dishes are all large portions and tasty. Pasta, meat, and fish, so many great dishes to choose from! My favorite meat? The lamb chops. Otherwise, the dish I enjoy most often is the eggplant parmagian. On Weds nights, it's Greek Night, with Greek food and music. The eggplant is called Moussaka, and il Mare offers a wide variety of delicious choices that make Greek Night a special night to eat out. il Mare serves Cocktails, and has a fine wine list, including a local Mexican winery Montevina. Montevina has a rich, full bodied, slightly jammy, cab-merlot blend, that is perfect with the hearty Italian and Greek dishes il Mare serves. If you can, save room for dessert. Four people can share one slice of il Mare's specially made Chocolate cake! It is layers thick with creamy chocolate frosting, fresh strawberries and whipped cream. When I'm in Zih, il Mare is my home away from home, and I always feel welcome there. Even if I have not eaten there, I will sometimes stop in on the way home for a "noche gorro", a night-cap, cocktail. I order a "Russo Blanco", White Russian, to wind down the evening while listening to the music, and watching the lights from the stars and town reflect on the bay. It is peaceful and relaxing with hints of being in Spain or Italy, a very international feel that adds to the pleasure of being in marvelous Mexico!
