We have been going to Puerto Vallarta for ten years and always ask people we meet where they suggest to eat and then try it if it sounds good. PV has great restaurants but we keep going back to Trio at 2464 Guerrero St and think it is the best we have been to in PV (including Cafe Des Artiste, Vista Grill, Hacienda San Angel, Naranjo, La Palapa, Le Bistro, the River Cafe, and Mark's Grill and Mezzo Giorno in Bucerias) and ranks right up there with any place we have been to anywhere. The atmosphere is great, the decor is interesting and beautiful, the service is spot on, and the food is creative, fresh, varied, served beautifully and well prepared. Most nights they have a soft sax player who is great background and plays old favorites that are recognizable. Every one we have taken there loves it and we look forward to eating twice there very year. I had the rack of lame twice and it was just great. Their sister restaurant Vitea on the Malecon near the Sail Sculpture is also excellent.

Trio is a must for my family on our annual Puerto Vallarta vacation. We are never disappointed with the quality of the food from appetizers to dessert. It's great that they have small plates at such reasonable prices so you can easily eat an appetizer, an entree and dessert.

Last visit to Trio was 6 years ago the last time we were in P.V. Anticipated a great meal again and invited friends. My wife ordered sea bass off the Catch of the Day. The piece of fish seemed under two ounces, there were 3 tiny shrimp and two muscles.I ordered sea bass off of the regular menu and again a miniscule piece of fish was camouflaged by a white fish lying on white mashed potatoes. My wife actually went back the next day to complain (not wanting to make a scene in front of our friends). She was cordially received and an e-mail from the manager was received a day after we were back home ( Florida) offering us a free entree within two months. The food, was fresh and well prepared and service was as one would expect in one of P.V.'s more expensive restaurants.

My wife & I have been visiting Puerto Vallarta almost annually for 20+ years & have dined at Trio during each of our visits since it opened in 1994. For quite a few years we were enthusiastic boosters. Unfortunately, our last two visits over the past three years have been quite disappointing.

Three years ago we were the last diners, entering the restaurant at 10 PM & the last to leave. The staff was just short of rude, service was perfunctory, & the food was forgettable.

This year my wife & I had dinner at Trio the evening of Wednesday 11/27 at 9:30 PM after an art walk in Central PV. Although we had made reservations & the crowd was thinning when we arrived, we were seated at a terrible table near the bathroom & a table with small children. Having requested another table, we were moved upstairs to one of the two outdoor balcony tables, which we appreciated & enjoyed. Our server was pleasant, willing, but inexperienced & slow.

Our lemon drop martinis were grossly sour; our waiter took them back & removed them from our bill. Our food was OK but forgettable. The wine menu was extensive but over-priced.

Trio is off our most-liked list. We strongly recommend Archie's Wok in PV & Mark's Bar & Grill in Bucerias as superior alternatives.

We have eaten at Trio five times, and our dinners here were special and delicious. This last trip we were fortunate to come during duck season so there were a variety of duck dishes, from comfit to roast duck with bread dressing and cabbage. Not to worry though, there is a roast duck entree that is a standard. From a lovely fruity Malbec wine from Argentina, to filtered water (safe to drink) to a grilled Romaine lettuce salad, we knew that each course to come would be perfect. One night as we had a slightly longer wait time, the chef sent out the soup d'Maison, a lovely dark rich broth that complemented the assorted breads that came before dinner. My partner tried the fillet mignon one night, excellent, medium and I had a pasta dish with shrimp and a tomato basil sauce with grated cheese. One very nice feature is that many entrees come in two sizes, and the smaller plate is certainly fine for those wishing to have various courses or just enjoy smaller portions..
For dessert, we have tried the creme brulee, and the molten chocolate cake with pecan and vanilla ice cream on the side. Again, beautifully presented. My next time I will try the mango crepes with hibiscus sauce if it is on the menu.
A tenor sax player played background music one night, and Mexican trio another night. One night the Mexican trio was a little loud, the next time, it was soft and melodic. Colonial interior with plants and brick walls, very nice ambiance. Pricing maybe a little higher than other Mexican restaurants, but this is a first class place, so that is to be expected. If you go to the main church in Puerto Vallarta, it is just a block or two to the right up a few doors. Convenient and excellent choice for dinner out. Enjoy.
