pros- great breakfast, great location and ambiance.

cons - they messed up the bill once out of the 5 times we were there but it was major. There is some law that is making credit card usage expensive and we were asked many times to use cash which I hesitate on due to secuirty.

Breakfast was great, as a matter of fact we ate here 5 out of the 5 days we were here. I had been here a few years ago and was happy to see this restaurant was still around. This is on the beach and you can also see the sunset from here. Service is great and free wifi is provided.

The food, the service, the location all were fantastic. The portion sizes were just right the prices were really reasonable. Loved that clean upscale feel. The waiters wore crisp clean gorgeous shirts. Last meal while in Mexico and left us feeling very good.

During our stay in Vallarta we had dinner here twice, breakfast twice and lunch once- all within 2 weeks. I highly recommend this lovely, vibrant and very good restaurant. It sits right on one of the most popular beaches in town [very entertaining people watching!] and has on beach dining as well as a lovely restaurant. The food is mostly local and really well prepared and very eclectic including Mexican, Mediterranean and American influences. The service is SLOW however. There never seems to be enough servers for the amount f guests. Can be frustrating. They also have great live jazz and Brazilian music nightly which adds to the whole experience!

Having been to P.V. many times we have a regular rotation of restaurants that we like to eat at and we recommend to others. La Palapa has always been spotty but the location is so wonderful we recommend with a disclaimer...I can no longer recommend this restaurant to anybody.

We went on Sunnday night with a reservation for 6 people...we were seated immediately and then waited 15 minutes to get a menu???? We got menus and put in our orders and had to wait 45 minutes to get the appetizers. We looked to get help from a manager but none were to be found. The waiter forgot 2 salads for the next course. The main courses were delayed but only about 15 minutes. The deserts took 40 minutes and we were still missing one.

The biggest issue was that nobody came to talk to us or made mention of the horrific waits.
It is very frustrating to have major issues in your dining experience and not to have anybody to go to for help

If you want a wonderful dining experience go to the sister restaurant Vista Grill it was spot on.

Hola DCZ-6,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review of La Palapa. We are as disappointed as you are to hear about your experience! We have looked over our service standards and had a long discussion about the long wait times and poor service and are committed to greatly improving our communication with our patrons. Thanks again for your feedback and we hope to see you back soon, hopefully with a better outcome!

I was in Puerto Vallarta for a work event, and we had an event planned in Las Palapa last night (February 27, 2014).

Overall: AWESOME! You should go if you want some American-ish food and a beautiful setting.

Atmosphere/Location: Oceanside -- so inherently beautiful, with very bamboo-inspired decor and comfortable seating. We closed off over half of the restaurant that night for our work event, so there were other people dining around us but it felt like the entire restaurant was just for us. We went around 7:30pm and near high tide so there were waves lapping really close to our tables, but it didn't bother anyone (at least I don't think so?).

Food: very good - I was talking to my friends and told them that I'm not sure if I enjoyed it because it was good or because it was reminscient of bistro-style American food or anything else, but it was delicious. We started off with a spinach salad with shaved jicama, some local cheese, and a light dressing - so light, refreshing, and satisfying. Our main course consisted of these jumbo shrimp (really big, each shrimp was probably the 5-10 count size =P) with a plantain mash and a coconutty sauce - so good - best thing I've eaten in Puerto Vallarta so far. For dessert, there was a coconut panna cotta - this was meh - not enough coconut flavor, haha. My friend was vegetarian and they were very accomodating - she said her vegetable lasagna thing was delicious also.

Drinks: We had an open bar (wooo!), so we had lots and lots of options, but the drinks were so good. They had tamarind margaritas (really good), cucumber cilantro margaritas (my favorite of the night), hibiscus margaritas (I don't care for flower drinks), and more. They were strong, but it was nice because the drink remained tasty as the ice melted.

We had lots of fun - there was live music and live entertainment :). It's probably a little more expensive than the normal restaurants around, but with the terrific ambiance and great service, you get what you pay for.
