“Oasis in the heart of the "Zona Romantica" in Puerto Vallarta”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2011

This is a great boutique hotel in the center of the "Old Town" of Puerto Vallarta. The rooms are well sized, attractive, clean and well appointed. Attention to detail is evident with such extras as incense, a stocked refrigerator with a complimentary bottle of champagne along with fruit and chocolates awaiting your arrival. A delicious a la carte breakfast is included in the price and served in the Hotel's courtyard dining room. Mike, Irma and their daugher Tatiana make you feel like you are a welcome guest in their home. This is our second time to visit Hacienda Alemana and we look forward to returning next year for our annual gallery and shopping trip to Vallarta.

This was only our second trip to Mexico - our first was in 2008 to a large all-inclusive resort on the Mayan Riviera side, and we were originally planning to do a similar vacation this year, until I happened upon a review in which someone mentioned Hacienda Alemana. It sounded so intriguing that we completely changed our plans and chose an entirely different kind of holiday. We were not disappointed! This is a lovely place in a great location. The hotel is beautiful, we loved the location (great access to places on foot or by bus), and it has the BEST staff and owners. Every morning, either Tatiana or Irma would stop at our breakfast table to find out how we had enjoyed our previous day and to help us make plans. Their help was invaluable. Here are some of the highlights of our week:
- Breakfasts in the hotel. Delicious and as hearty as you like. Great way to start each day. (We also had supper at the hotel twice, including their German buffet on the day we arrived. Everything was great.)
- the beach at Boca (just a short bus ride from the hotel, and much quieter than Los Muertos beach)
- going through the little town of Yelapa up to the small waterfall. What an interesting little community there.
- snorkeling at Las Caletas (with Vallarta Adventures. They also serve a spectacular buffet. We also liked the Rhythms of the Night tour.)
- dining at Mexican Joe's. We went there twice. It's on Basilio Badillo not far from the beach. The name and the front of the restaurant don't look like anything special, but they have a lovely little courtyard in the back surround by high brick walls covered in vines. You can dine there by candlelight under the stars, listening to live music. The food was fantastic and the prices were great. Apparently it has only been open three months, so their prices might go up once they get more established, but we couldn't believe the value. We had a lobster dinner for two, including appetizer, bean soup (delicious!), main course with lobster tails, fish, scallops and shrimp, and dessert for about $35. And the staff are really friendly and very proud of their restaurant and their food.
- just wandering around old Vallarta at any time of the day
- relaxing and reading on the balcony outside our hotel room
We wouldn't hesitate to book another holiday here. It's a very different experience than an all-inclusive resort, but our total expenditures were comparable and we liked this better in so many ways. Overall, there were only two "cons". We found the bed mattress a bit hard (but lots of people prefer that), and since the hotel is on a busy street, there was a fair bit of traffic noise at times. But Mike and Irma have done a good job of designing the place to muffle that, by setting the rooms back behind the restaurant, using good quality doors and windows, and having lots of plants. And actually we kind of liked all those sounds - they were the sounds of Mexico.

I have been coming to PV for six years in a row now and this has been my best place to spend time.. A great hotel , friendly staff, and great hospitality from owmners Mike and Irma.
We rented a car and Irma arranged averything, car deliverred at hotel and pick up by rental company the next morning.. The restaurant is very good , especially for the buffet twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday.
Pool is small but great as it is heated..
It is a cool place to relax in private.. Our room was big, clean and very nice..
Highly recommended!!

Could not ask for more in a boutique hotel--------except an ocean view, but then it would cost twice as much and you'd have to book a year in advance.

Hacienda Alemana is a jewel in the heart of Vallarta's Romantic Zone. My wife The place runs like a Swiss watch.

Visually, this small hotel is stunning; the layout is superb, the materials first-rate, the food and service excellent. All in all, owners Mike, Irma, and their daughter Tatiyana, make you feel that you're a visitor in their home.

Heartily recommended!

We stayed here for eight nights and just returned yesterday. I expected this place to be very nice based on the reviews here and in Fodors but it was even better. It is an oasis in the middle of Puerto Vallarta. The restaurant, the pool area and the rooms are all beautiful, modern and quiet. As a recent reviewer said- detail, detail detail- the brickwork, the stonework, the granite , the landscaping, the 85 degree pool and even the quiet air conditioner all combine to make this a a perfect place to stay. You can walk anywhere in Puerto Vallarta or take buses to beaches from right outside the Hacienda. We went to Sayulita, Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlan by bus easily and cheaply.
The review of the Hacienda in Fodor's Puerto Vallarta is misleading. You now eat breakfast every day except Monday (when you get a ticket to eat at Lagostinos on the beach) in the Hacienda's restaurant and you can choose from the menu- every breakfast was superior. Fodor's also says that the Hacienda might be better for independent travellers because there is no front desk after the restaurant closes. Well the owners Mike and Irma and their daughter Tatiana are there all the time. We talked to all of them every day and they will give you advice and book trips for you. They live at the Hacienda. You don't have to go to a front desk-they come to you every day at breakfast to see how you are doing. If we stopped by the bar late at night for a drink one of the family was always there. Tatiana was our tour guide for a trip to San Sebastian and she is great. The staff is also very helpful and extremely nice- thanks to Julien for serving our breakfast every day and answering our questions about Puerto Vallarta. I don't want to repeat the best comments in the previous reviews but they are all true. We hope to return to Puerto Vallarta and hope that we can stay here again.
P.S. When you check out the website remember that the Hacienda is even better in person than it looks on the website.

The writing of this review is to thank our hosts Mike and Irma for their vision and hospitality and to compliment their outstanding staff. You couldn't ask for a better location. Hacienda Alemana is located in the older part of PV known as the romantic zone. You can walk to many shops, the beach and the malacon, it's all right there. My wife and I stayed at Hacienda Alemana for four days and enjoyed every minute. We have been going to PV since 1985 and the Hacienda is by far the best place you could ask for. If you want outstanding comfort, ultra modern design with an on site restaurant and bar, this is it! Mike, the owner is a master chef and he and his wife Irma both pay attention to the smallest of details and do their utmost to make your stay their highest priority. They have an outstanding staff on site for the rooms, restaurant and bar and are only too happy to accommodate you... all you have to do is ask. Should you want to plan a day trip or tour or whatever, Mike or Irma will arrange it. Want your dinner in your room or your balcony, ask and it will happen! Hacienda Alemana is truly the best of the BEST and is so affordable. The rooms are outstanding, super quiet A/C, a magnificent bathroom with marble floors and granite counter top, flowers, king size bed with super linens, 32" flat screen, in room safe and a fridge stocked with beer, water and cold drinks. As I said "DETAIL! DETAIL! DETAIL!" There is an absolutely beautiful courtyard area with a swimming pool. You can sit and relax here and have a cold beer or margarita from the bar. If you are searching for a fantastic place to stay and are reading this review....you should stop and book your reservations ASAP. There are only 9 rooms at this boutique B&B and those who have stayed here will always return again and again as we are about too. As for crime we have been going to PV since 1985 and it is the same wonderful and friendly town now as it was then. We are planing our next trip there very soon and look forward to seeing Mike and Irma and their great staff who made our stay so amazing and memorable.
