I have to respond to management feedback on a poor review. I have been coming to this resort since 1991. Years ago it was a five star resort and called the Costa Vida. Over the years it has changed ownership twice and the property has deteriorated greatly. This year timeshare owners received a very large bill over and above maintenance fees for upgrades. Upgrades were being made to other resort holdings in Puerto Vallarta not the Howard Johnson. As an FYI we have been told every year for the past seven years that the rooms were going to be upgraded. As of our last visit everything, including the bedding and decor has remained the same as when the resort was called Costa Vida. The only rooms that I have seen upgraded are the studio and one bedroom model used for time share sales (which are the pictures on the Howard Johnson website). If you want to see how the rooms really look - check out the pictures on trip advisor.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your review. Regarding your comments about our remodeling, rooms are currently being remodeled...and they won't look like the model rooms used for time share nor are those the pictures on our website. The pictures on our website are the new studio as it will look on January 2011and the regular one bedroom suite.

We are aware the hotel needs this new look, 2009 and 2010 have been tough on the destination itself and we are looking forward to a great season 2011.

Thank you so much and have a great day!

This resort is old but well maintained. The staff was friendly and very quick to respond to requests. The ocean view from each room is unsurpassed. We came to relax and that is exactly what we got. In September, the resort was low in occupancy and every service/restaurant/bar/spa/staff was very accessible and quick. The food is very good and you can dine eloquently in the restaurant dining area or casually in the bar area - don't miss the 2 for 1 happy hour at the bar! Make this trip what you want.

Without exception, the staff was not only helpful but also seemed genuinely concerned that guests enjoy their stay and provided whatever assistance was asked for. That being said, it's a shame the place is so run down. There has clearly been no investment in the place in quite some time. Wifi is only available in rooms adjacent to the pool area, but is available all over the pool, bar and restaurant area. At first they wanted to charge me extra, but eventually gave it to me for nothing. Still, kinda inconvenient to have to go all the way downstairs to hook up and then have to listen to other guests shouting at each other and making noise while you try to focus on your task. The computer room had two old machines in it, with a sign saying they are for email use only. Lumpy mattress and pillows; old bedding, old furniture and fittings with obvious repairs, needs painting, etc. All of this is an ownership issue, not a management issue or a staff issue. Ownership is not taking care of its employees or guests by not keeping the place up. Apparently, ownership has recently changed. At any rate, I knew I wasn't booking a luxury hotel, but the pictures on the web are not accurate. Yes, the place is clean, just kinda run down. Though I did have to spend 20 minutes cleaning some encrusted crud off of the TV remote, which I gotta say really grossed me out. There's a bus stop across the street and cabs are readily available. Location is pretty good, as it's a short bus or cab ride into old town or Centro and you can get to the beach easily from there, or catch the bus to Mismaloya and other points south.. Beautiful sunset views from the rooms with a small but adequate private beach and a snorkeling lagoon. You can see how it was at one time a real gem and could be again with some updating. As is, you can find nicer places for the same money.

With regards to your comments, we are in fact remodeling our rooms, we expect to have them ready by January 2011 - within 3 months. Remodeling includes "heavenly bed type" mattress and bedding, 32" plasma tv's, Ipod dock stations, new sofabeds and new drapes.
We hope you come back after the remodeling is done and give us a second chance to meet your expectations. Please email me directly gfadul@playadelsolpv.com in order to give you a special discount on your next visit.

Thank you and have a great day!

We have been going to Costa Vida for over 20 years, and this time will be our last. It has been bought by Howard Johnson, and the rest is history! Unbelievable lack of maintenance, still have "sales jobs" put on you when you check in. The rooms have not been upgraded in forever, and the filthiness is very visible. I watched housekeepers "clean" the rooms. Dishes were not washed, they were rinsed out and put back in the cabinets. Toilets were not swabbed out. My traveling partners and I became very ill the day we got home - I was diagnosed with salmonella poisoning. BE AWARE THAT WE NEVER ATE ANYWHERE BUT AT THE COSTA SUR RESORT. We own 3 units there but will let them go, because no one wants to go there, including us, and they are almost untradeable. Management was pleasant, but not helpful. NOT FOR US AGAIN. DON"T TAKE A CHANCE AND GO THERE!!!

We recently spent a week at Howard Johnson's Puerto Vallarta. We enjoyed the hotel, the location and the attentive service. There's cheap public transportation. We stayed in a one bedroom unit. The air conditioning works, the furnishings are a bit dated but everything is clean. They should replace those old TVs and gas stoves (you have to use a match to light it, like in the Dark Ages). The restaurant is very nice and the food was decent and reasonably priced.
