“Relaxation at its best!!”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

Have been going here approximately 15 years. It's quaint and the staff is wonderful. Antonio was very helpful and informative. The spa is small, intimate and the ladies are all very good; the facials and massages are well worth it. I love the lagoon and spend hours there floating on a noodle and watching the fish. The pools are great. The location is great; you can catch the bus going north or south right at the hotel. It's way quieter than the Marina or downtown. The rooms are spacious and clean. The views and sunsets are magnificent. I'll definitely keep coming back!!!

Room Tip: I always get a corner studio on the south side of the north tower; lots of cross breezes.

I went to Costa Sur for the first time, Sept 19th through the 26th from the time I got there and until I left the staff knew my name and were very nice and went out of their way to help me any way they could. It is beautiful everywhere, I could not get enough of the scenery and the rooms are very clean and comfortable. I want to tell all the staff that I had a fantastic time and will definitely be coming back, Abel, Flavio, Clemente, Osbaldo, Gerardo, Victor, Janet, Fabricio, Enrique and last but not least Captain Antonio all of you made my stay wonderful. Hopefully I will see you all again!! If you want to relax and de-stress this is the place to be. There are not enough words for me to explain what a rainforest hideaway lovely place this is!

Room Tip: I liked the 1st floor I had a studio and it was perfect for me!

We had a very nice stay at the Costa Sur Resort, September 5-11, 2013. The resort is located right on the beach with a very small private lagoon. We saw some amazing sunsets and sunrises from our 11th floor balcony! Although the rooms are somewhat shabby and need updating and new furniture, the bed was large and comfortable. We had some maintenance problems that were immediately addressed when we reported them. We had to change rooms mid stay because of some mold and mildew problems, probably caused by the dripping air conditioner. The next room was satisfactory. Our room was cleaned every day and we always left a tip for the housekeeping staff. Unfortunately, we could only get Wii-Fi from the pool area but that was not a big deal as we needed to be generally "unplugged" from our crazy life back in Dallas.

The on-site restaurant serves up excellent food. We ate there often and never had a meal we did not enjoy. It was such a sublime pleasure to sit on the patio overlooking the beach and eat a leisurely delicious breakfast. The servers were friendly and spoke English. The restaurant manager, Antonio, was particularly friendly and helpful. He suggested places we might want to visit and how to get to them. He always made time to come over and chat with us and provide some useful information. He helped make our stay even more of a pleasure as we felt like we had made a new friend. As mentioned in previous posts, the bees can be very annoying. However, we found that if we placed an open container of jelly on the ledge by out table the bees congregated around it and that seemed to solve the problem.

My husband had a great massage from one of the massage therapists at the spa. The concierge was patient as he helped us plan some excursions (Rythmns of the Night, a bus trip to San Sebastian). A bus stop right across the street made it cheap and easy to get to town to more exciting restaurants, the boardwalk, beach, bazaar, etc. All of the hotel staff spoke English and were cordial and helpful. We will definately stay here again.

If you want to get away from the real world and just chill this is a great place. If not let me warn you of 2 things. During our 3 nights we were never able to connect on the Wi-Fi although given log-in information. Second, the fitness room was tiny and antiquated. However, Costa Sur has a lot to offer. This is an older resort located on the highway south of Puerto Vallarta and close to Mislamoya. We had an efficiency room with a kitchenette. It was clean and provided all the space we needed. The king size bed was very comfortable. Every room has a fantastic view of Bahia de Banderas. There are 2 pools on the deck overlooking the the bay. Both are nice, and there are few activities so it is generally quiet. We had lunch and drinks by the pool several days. The service was quick and efficient and the prices reasonable. You can lose your self from the rest of the world and still be 5 minutes from Centro Puerto Vallarta and plenty of great restaurants and shopping.

We picked this place at random off of intervalworld.com and couldn't have been happier with our selection. We wanted a quiet and relaxing vacation and that is exactly what we got. We picked August, so it was less touristy, which was great. It was hot, humid, and a little rainy, but nothing so bad that it made it uncomfortable or miserable (besides you are right by the ocean and two pools.) It also made for some really great thunder and lightning storms! We got a room in the south tower on the 7th floor. The view was incredible. Going to sleep and waking up to the sound of waves, was amazing. You are about a 15 minute taxi ride from Boca or Downtown, which is also awesome, because you are set apart from most anything, which keeps this place quiet. I could go on and on about how amazing this place is, but before I get carried away, I will say that 100% the reason why this place is so amazing is, because of the staff. Literally everyone we met was incredibly nice and helpful. They all remember your names (wish I could say the same haha,) remember your favorite drink, what you like to eat…even your birthday (they left a super delicious piece of cake in my room and a nice card from the staff.) If the amazing ocean view from your room isn’t enough to make Costa Sur your vacation first choice, the staff should be. I look forward to going back next year!

Our studio unit was large, with a small balcony and a great ocean view. We arrived during the very low season so the resort was nearly empty. So I was surprised they gave us a room that needed repairs. For example, we had to ask housekeeping to replace two of the main light bulbs (only bedside lamps had working light bulbs).
But most surprising is the shower door had a large crack across the entire shower door and was held together by duct tape! We were very careful not to touch the door during showers as well as us opening/closing the door. (There was no tub - only this shower stall with the duct-taped door!).
We did thoroughly enjoy:

We ate at Costa Sur our first evening but the food was just ok. We were surrounded by bees whenever we ate or drank there. I noticed that the bees were attracted to food that was left in some of the potted plants near the tables (which never was removed), and the bar was always plagued by bees around the uncovered drink garnish tray and the bar top felt sticky, which also attracted the bees. The bees also foraged on the place mats at each table. So each day, we made the decision to leave Costa Sur and eat at restaurants in Old Town (a short bus ride for 7 pesos).
Loved La Palapa, El Brujo, Fredys Tucan, El Mole de Jovita, Joe Jack's Fish Shack, Kaiser Maximilion. These restaurants were all stars! Each for their own cuisine, service and price range. (pls see my comments on triip advisor for restaurants).

Each day Costa Sur offered a "drink of the day" but we found their drinks all watered down with little alcohol. So we resorted to ordering shots and wine or beer whenever we went to the bar in the afternoon upon returning from our daily adventures.

The staff at the main desk and tour desk were nice and helpful.
We think Rafael is their best waiter ever.

We did organize a tour through the hotel - it was the City Tour and Botanical Gardens Tour.
The City Tour was good, the Botanical Gardens tour was nice, and we went to a local Tequila Maker which was absolutely excellent!!! Our tour guide also took us to a jewelry store specializing in Mexican Opal jewelry and "guaranteed" the validity of the gold and silver quality. I purchased two pair of earrings - guaranteed to be sterling silver - well, it's NOT!! My ears became infected..the sterling silver isn't what they say it is (I am allergic to nickel, which is commonly used to mix with silver - so if you are allergic to nickel, avoid the silver because nickel is mixed in with the silver in their products).
Upon reading the "certificate of authenticity" handed out when we purchased the jewelry, upon translating it, the paper is actually a bill of sale. Do not believe this silver vendor.
IF YOU PURCHASE SILVER OR GOLD JEWELRY FROM THE VENDOR WITH THIS TOUR, PLS BEWARE. THEY DO NOT SELL TRUE SILVER OR GOLDER JEWELVRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you asked me if I would never stay at this place again, bottom line is that I would say NO!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: By-pass the scheduled drinks and food. Downtown has much better food and drinks. Look at Trip Adviso...

My husband and I just got back from Puerto Vallarta and we are so glad you stayed at Costa Sur. It's a nice hotel for its age, the staff was very friendly, and went out their way to help us a couple of times when we needed. It's also conveniently located (10 min from the Malecon and the downtown). Also, the lagoon in front of the hotel was just amazing, we really enjoyed it, and spent many hours swimming in it. Because it's not a mega resort we felt we had a real Mexican vacation. We'll certainly go back.
