My family has been coming here for years snd the place is falling apart if you lean on your balcony rail the old paint will stick to you and many of the balcony posts are crumbling too. We did the bracelets for $65 a good value but was going to extend them if game 1 of the Stanley cup was on? I waited and waited and they would never give me a straight answer they even got the hotel manager to look and they couldn't figure it out! It was like they were stringing me a long so I wouldn't leave. Over all place needs a major makeover!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments.
We are constantly working on the maintenance of our property. Being basically on the water means it is a 24/7 job as the salty water tends to deteriorate paint very fast. How ever we take your comments as an opportunity to improve and i am sure you will notice major improvements on your next visit.

Have a great day!

We had a wonderful time in PV and loved staying at Costa Sur. It is an older poperty but it is very clean. The kitchen was well stocked with all the dishes you would need and a coffee pot, although, I would recommend Coffee Cathedral near the OXXO bus stop. The room was very comfortable and the beach view was awesome! We had amazing sunsets. Our room was in the older tower on the 13th floor and we were a little concerned about street noise but had no problems. We slept with the slider open and the sound of the ocean was wonderful.

The pool areas were really nice and it was never a problem to get a spot at either pool. We used the heated pool in the morning an later at night and the unheated pool during the day. The bar is a fun spot to hang out during Happy Hour and they have AWESOME popcorn. I recommend ording a "Bull" from the bar.

The very best part of Costa Sur is their beach. Although it is on the small side we never had a problem getting a chair. We really enjoyed snorkling and found it to be most clear when the tide is out. I would recommend water shoes as the beach sand is rocky and it hurts getting from your chair to the water.

The staff at Costa Sur is wonderful. Everyone was very friendly and we were fortunate to get a lot of great suggestions from Carlos on what to see and where to eat.

I would highly recommend taking the bus from the airport it is only 13 pesos. You just need to get through the crazy sales people and taxi drivers out to the street. You wait right by the sky bridge on the airport side of the road. It is a blue bus that says "Centro" let the driver know you need to get to Mismoloya and he will let you know where to wait for the organge bus that will take you to Costa Sur. Once you are on the orange bus let the driver know you are staying at Costa Sur and he will let you off right in front. I can't say enough about how easy it is to take the bus while you are there. The local people are very friendly and will often ask where you are going and make sure you know which color of bus to get.

One last thing, the rooms have hair dryers =)

We really liked PV and were so happy to stay at Costa Sur. The world is huge with so much to see that I usually don't think about returning to the same place, but we will definately hope to go back to Costa Sur. It was a great vaction with a nice balance of plenty to see and do and plenty of just relaxing!

This was my second time to Puerto Vallarta, first time we spent closer to downtown. We were happy with the hotel. Nice staff, not too pushy about the time shares, but we did end up unplugging our phone as some guy from the front desk asked us multiple times to go on the presentation. Felt like it would be a waste of our time and of the hotels' time, as we had zero interest in a time-share. Watch out at the airport as you leave, there are many different companies that solicit you as you leave to give you discounts on tours, as long as you go to their presentation on timeshares.. we were roped in to this, but we didn't know better, that was a huge waste of time. overall, great place, i would return, rooms all have ocean views! happy hour could be longer, it was only an hour... and if you're looking for a party place, with a lot of college kids, this is not the place.

Room Tip: great rooms all have ocean views! we were on the 13th floor and could hear the ocean at night. we di...

I recently stayed at PV's Costa Sur Resort & Spa for my Birthday (last week 5/3-5/10). I LOVE PV & had a BLAST. Costa Sur is a nice hotel to stay. It is located away from the hustle & bustle of downtown & has a nice private beach/lagoon. We took the bus everywhere. The bus stop is right across the street from the hotel & takes less than 10min to get to the malecon (first stop for only 7pesos.)

When you get off the bus at the first stop, BEWARE of the little booth of guys at the "tour" agency trying to book you on a timeshare presentation. They are scammers & very unethical & unprofessional. DO NOT do business with these people. BEWARE of Jose AKA Francisco AKA whatever his real name was & Marco. Total Scammers!

Back to Costa Sur: The staff are EXTREMELY friendly. It was my first time staying here & unlike others have said, I was treated as if they had known me from previous vacations. Everyone was extremely helpful, polite, professional & friendly. The staff really want to ensure your stay w/them is the very best.

Although I rate the room so-so due to some upgrades that are needed (bathroom could use a makeover) and I had a constant ant problem in the bathroom & a few on the kitchen counter. I expected this from prior reviews I read before booking the room.

All rooms are ocean front, the studios are very spacious, and again the staff are amazing! I would suggest adding a couple of theme nights to bring the guests together a little more, but hey, happy hour sufficed for this. A lot of the guests are returning owners who love this place and I would stay here again.

Thanks for a great time Andres, Carlos, Eric, Alicia, Juan & Carmen (housekeeping)! Buen dia mi amigos!

Room Tip: I stayed on the 5th floor and you only hear street traffic from the bathroom. Keep your patio door...

Just returned from our fourth trip to PV - and our first stay at Costa Sur. We found the staff to be without exception courteous, attentive, well informed and eager to help in any way they could. We felt like they genuinely cared about us and wanted to make sure we had a wonderful time. One unexpected bonus worth mentioning is that we could exchange our dollars for pesos right at the hotel front desk and get almost the exact same rate of exchange offered by the banks! During our stay, the hotel was giving 12 pesos per dollar and the banks downtown were giving 12.59! Other folks we met told us their hotels didn't offer such good rates. Most said they were offered right around 10 pesos per dollar.

Upon check-in we were informed that Costa Sur is part of a timeshare consortium (queue that,"Oh GOD, here we go again - prepare for battle - stomach in knots - fight or flight feeling). But remarkably, the battle never came! Unlike other places (including the gauntlet of timeshare vultures one is forced to walk through upon arrival at the airport), we never felt pressured into attending their presentation. They simply informed us of the incentives available should we choose to go - a free breakfast, 500 pesos in resort credit, a free city tour and a 15% discount on hotel charges - and that was it. Several days into our stay we did, in fact, decide to attend a presentation. It was brief, pleasant and very low-key. The salesman explained the program, patiently answered all of our questions in clear and concise terms then showed us the price and asked us 2 questions; whether we thought the program would suit our needs and desires as travellers and whether the cost would be comfortably within our means. He even excused himself so we could talk privately for a few minutes, then returned and accepted our responses respectfully and without question, thanked us for our time and wished us well.

Our room was a studio suite without the "all inclusive" package. Our room was on the 9th floor and the view truly lived up to the claim of "full ocean view". The hotel is literally on the beach, rising 14 stories up the steep slope of the mountainside. We sat on our balcony every morning and evening watching dolphins at play and drinking in our unobstructed view of the entire expanse of Banderas Bay...tranquil and stunning at the same time! The room itself was simple but lovely, immaculately clean and spacious with a sitting area, breakfast table and a luxuriously comfortable king-sized bed. The kitchen area included an apartment-sized fridge, 2-burner gas stove, coffee maker, toaster, microwave and (a pleasant surprise) a more than adequate assortment of pots, pans and utensils. After a pilgrimage to WalMart (yes, all road DO lead to WalMart, even in paradise!!!) there was ample space to store everything we needed for our week's meals.

About the food and beverages...well stocked fridge aside, we did eat breakfast and dinner at the resort's open-air restaurant a time or two. The food was, to be honest, overpriced and solidly mediocre. Two notable exceptions were the wonderfully seasoned cheeseburger ($800 pesos and the outstanding guacamole ($650 pesos). My husband and I aren't big drinkers, but when in Rome...well, let's just say we indulged in a cocktail or two! They certainly don't skimp on the booze, but some bartenders seemed to know how to make 'em, whereas others employed the strategy of "when in doubt, mix rum & any fruit juice that's at hand". Mai tais aren't supposed to be pink!

The resort's pools are quite lovely and we had little trouble finding lounge chairs when and were we wanted them. Since I'm quite fair-skinned, it was nice that there were plenty of shaded areas close to the pool and beach. Speaking of the beach...yes it's smaller than at other resorts and the sand is a bit coarse, but the fact that you can swim in the ocean without worrying about being blindsided by a rogue wave and snorkel to your heart's content in the crystal clear water of a large, protected lagoon the resort created more than compensates for the lack of sandy acreage. By the way, Costa Sur's lagoon is the only one of its kind in Puerto Vallarta!

So...while Costa Sur may not be all things to all people, the lovely room, attentive service, welcoming pool area and terrific lagoon more than make up for it's minor flaws. We will be back and we will be recommending Costa Sur to our friends.

While you're there..."Tony's Place" in Mismaloya is a must for superb seafood served in a jungle setting by the friendliest wait staff in PV. Ask the concierge for directions. Also, take a bus to Boca de Tomatlan (7 pesos) & catch a water taxi to Quimixto (about 100 pesos round trip) where you can rent a horse (150 pesos round trip) for an easy 30 minute guided ride though the rainforest to a gorgeous waterfall where you can relax at the little cafe, swim & even slide down the rocks. Go early in the day to avoid the crowds.

Room Tip: The hotel is right on the main highway about 3 miles south of downtown PV. There's also a lot o...

Costa Sur is a bit like wine. You can buy a crappy bottle of wine that tastes wonderful with good food and good friends or you can drop $200 for a bottle that tastes like the $8 stuff. Costa Sur is the $8 bottle that with the right people feels like much more. Think of it as the place where your sort of sketchy uncle goes when he's on vacation in mexico. It's not elegant and is rough around the edges, but it by no means is it unclean, scary, dangerous or unwelcoming. Like others who reviewed it, we landed there as the place that had availability for a time share trade (a sign of imperfect). Our refrigerator took a long while to get going (36 hours), but once cool it worked great, the stove was from the Brady Bunch era, we didn't always have hot water, and the floors looked like they were from an old high school locker room. With that said, the beds were VERY comfortable, the balconies large and comfortable, and the maid service was outstanding. When we had random requests (i.e. we need a sewing kit, matches, an extra pillow, or bottle opener) they were quick to respond and had it at our door in minutes. The hotel staff pretty much knew our names by the end of the 1st day, and the common areas (pool, spa, lobby, and beach) were VERY clean, well kept up, and very comfortable. These areas more than made up for the rooms that are best described as "tired." The food is actually pretty good (although it's one menu all the time). The drinks were well mixed and well priced, and daily happy hour was just that, very fun, lively, and had some pretty good deals. The beach is a bit strange. At high tide it's a pretty small sliver of sand, but do you really need miles of sand to cross to get to the water? It is nice in that they have a breakwater that stops the sometimes large waves from washing you away and you can snorkel right in front of the hotel. It's enough to keep kids occupied for several hours during the week. Would I stay there again? Probably not. I would go for a VERY good last minute deal deal. But I would look elsewhere in the future. But if you are jonesing for a beach, warm weather, and a feels like the comfortable dive bar down the block feel, this is your place!
