Rivera del Rio Boutique Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 23, 2014

Getting to the River del Rio from the airport was a real adventure. We hired an official taxi at the airport (read:big bucks), thinking that we would get reliable service. Wrong! The driver got us in
the general vicinity of the boutique hotel, but could not find it. He asked perhaps a dozen other taxi drivers and locals before finally arriving. Elapsed time: about 1 1/2 hours (for a 25 minute trip). We were totally frazzled after this ordeal and flying all day.

Alexander, the young owner, welcomed us with a wet towel, guacamole with chips, coconut, and offered us a margarita (which we declined)--very nice reception! He sat us down and gave us more information than we could process. Importantly, he marked a map that allowed us to find an ATM to get pesos and find a vegetarian restaurant where we would eat dinner.

Rivera del Rio is located at the edge of the Cuale River in a residential neighborhood right in the old city. It is totally convenient to restaurants and tourist attractions. The renovated hotel has the feel of a mansion, with several floors containing four suites and four rooms, with a common kitchen. Special amenities include an inside and outside pool, jacuzzi, air conditioning, cable TV, wi-fi, and a purified water system. Also included is a freshly prepared breakfast, and calls to the U.S. and Canada.

The normal time for breakfast is 9-11 AM, but when Alexander learned how early we woke up each morning, he offered to serve us breakfast at 8 AM, an offer that we greatly appreciated and immediately accepted. Although routinely accommodating mainstream diets, Alexander did not hesitate to take on the challenge of our vegan diet. His cook prepared us vegan breakfasts that were nutritious, satisfying and simple. It was obvious that they had acquired special food items especially for us, like almond milk and tofu.

Our room,Maria-was on the second floor, accessible by elevator or stairs. The public kitchen and inside and outside dining rooms are on this floor. Our spacious lavender rooms is boldly and unusually appointed. An unusual configuration is the claw foot bathtub built into the walls separating the sleeping area from the bathroom, with shower curtains on both sides. there was an abundance of storage space. the king size bed was extremely comfortable, and we slept well all four nights.

In Puerata vallarta, if you want comfort, an individualist room with character, a freshly made breakfast each morning in the city center, we strongly recommend the Rivera del Rio.

My wife and I stayed here in early to mid December of 2013 and had the best time. We spent a few nights in the Maria suite and then moved up to the penthouse for the rest of our stay. Both rooms were great and it was fun to try out the different options in case we're back during higher season.

Our stay started out with a maragarita and a cold towel which was appreciated given that we live in Seattle and aren't accustomed to the hot and somewhat humid. Breakfast was served in the morning and you have your choice of a few classic Mexican breakfasts which were tasty and filling.

We swam all but one day we were there because the pool was so inviting and accessible. My wife loved spending hours in the pool tooling around in relative privacy. The balcony views were very nice, especially when we woke up early because of the proximity to the hills where dozens and dozens of hawks float about en masse. We really enjoyed the wildlife around the place and I think being by the river helps with that. We spent a few hours on our trip just watching and commenting on the various animals that flew or crawled or slithered by.

Alex was a great host who was intuitive to our personalities and preferences and he really made us feel welcome and fancy.

We will definitely be coming back in the future.

Rivera del Rio exceeded my every expectation. As soon as we arrived we were greated with a margarita and chips and salsa. Our room was unbelievably spacious and the staff went out of their way to be helpful and accommodating. I can't wait to return next year. I highly recommend Rivera del Rio.

We really enjoyed our stay - despite the worst weather in PV for 140 years! The Hotel is really different; each room has it's own style - so we stayed in two different ones over a 9 day stay. The first (Cortez) is huge and luxurious with the most fantastic bed I've ever slept in, amazing ceiling heights and luxurious decor. We then moved to the Candelaria suite, which has the advantage of easier access to the pool area (it's a bit tricky from the ground floor - you have to go up a very tight outside staircase). We loved Candelaria more - it has a divine little terrace of it's own adjacent to the pool and with a view of the mountains.
The reception / breakfast area is a ovely place to hang out too - more like a grand sitting room than a hotel lobby.
Some issues to be aware of: it's in a residential area, up an unsurfaced road. If you're more of a tourist than a traveller it might not be for you. We loved it. It was amazing feeling part of the town rather than just hidden away in a tourist complex. However that comes with noise - children, local parties, cockrels, trucks - Mexico is noisy! The other thing to be aware of (probably not a problem if you are from the US) is that the local staff have no English and struggle to read from google translate too (we tried that on our phone). So if yu want to order breakfast or arrange anything you really do need to speak to Alex the owner or get his mobile number. Otherwise you're lost without some Spanish. To our shame neither of us can speak a word. We loved the hotel - Alex the owner is an absolute gentleman, always helpful, makes great suggestions and can rustle up taxi at a moment's notice. He met us late at night with a margarita when our flight was delayed - with a big grin. Lovely guy. It's clearly a happy ship - you can tell that everyone is proud and happy to work there - big smiles everywhere. A great location too to wander down to the beach through the interesting parts of town without being beseiiged by tourists everywhere. It's a guesthouse though, not a hotel; it would have been nice if there had been a bar - maybe even an honesty bar would work, given the interesting nice customers Alex attracts to his place The hotel has a fascinating history, it's decorated in an artisinal, hand-made style, everything is luxurious without being manufactured or corporate; this place really is a gem. A gem ever so slightly in the rough - but still a gem.

Room Tip: Bring a Spanish phrasebook! The upstairs rooms have better pool access. There's a handy OXXO st...

My daughter and I stayed at Rivera del Rio for four nights and it was perfect. We had the Maria room on the main level and it was just right for us. The hot cooked breakfasts made to order breakfasts in the mornings were exceptional. The location was great. We had an easy walk through the island along the river to the beach. A very easy and scenic walk! We were also in walking distance of many very good restaurants in the old town. We wish we would have had more time to try them all. There is an interesting history attached to this area, including the Elizabeth Taylor influence! Much better than staying in a "sterile" resort setting. So much local culture and great food! Alex and his staff are the best at service and recommendations for things to do and places to dine.

Our booking experience could not have been easier - Alex is very responsive via email, and the photos and information online for each suite make it easy to see what you're getting. We chose the Candelaria suite, partly because we really wanted a comfortable king sized bed.

When our trip drew near, we emailed Alex to inquire about tours to Las Marietas. He answered our questions, and we then took him up on his offer to book the tour for us.

Arrival day - I think we won the award for earliest arrival ever. Due to transportation arrangements beyond our control, we arrived at the hotel around 9 AM. We had let Alex know in advance. When we arrived, Chayo was the most gracious hostess (although she does not speak English) and prepared breakfast for us. She showed us to the green room so that we'd have a place to relax while we waited for our suite to be ready.

The suite - just lovely. The king sized bed truly was comfortable (we had heard this can be a problem in PVR). The giant tub (painted concrete) was incredibly comfortable and big enough for two without anyone having to sit like a pretzel. We liked that we could exit out onto the street without having to go through the hotel. Be aware that for any room or suite, you will have to navigate stairs, and some are spiral stairs. I could see this being a problem for some people, but it was not for us. The Candelaria is on the street side, so there is some noise from vehicles, children playing in the street, the rooster on a nearby rooftop, etc. It didn't bother us, and it seemed very quiet at night.

Location - fantastic. This place is right on the river, and we enjoyed sitting at the "breakfast bar" on the balcony overlooking the river each morning. It was an easy walk down to the beach, the Malecon, the island with the vendors and artists' area, and many nice restaurants. I would highly recommend El Encanto, only a block away, for a very nice dinner experience. We also found several great street vendors within a block or so. The Candelaria has an outdoor bistro table area by the pool, and one night we got great "take-out" food from a street vendor and brought it back there to eat - very nice. If it's your first trip and you're unfamiliar with the area, I would recommend printing directions and/or a map, because none of the taxi drivers we had seemed to know how to find the place.

Condition - great. According to Alex, Benjamin has been the property's maintenance man for 40 years. He was there every single day and always busy with something - cleaning windows, fixing little things here and there. It is clear that he cares about the condition of the building and treats it with loving care. Most everything was in good working condition for us, and when we did encounter any little things Benjamin jumped right on it in no time. The pool and hot tub were in great condition and the pool was always kept at a nice temperature. Lovely to return after walking around half the day, and lounge in the pool.

Service - Alex, Diego, Chayo (and her helper, whose name we didn't catch), and Benjamin were absolutely excellent. When we had a boat tour scheduled, they arranged for a taxi at the right time and let us know the rate. They also arranged a taxi for our departure, and took care of bringing our luggage in and out. Can't say enough about how friendly and helpful everyone was. We felt right at home.

We enjoy places like this so much more than generic hotels. This place has character and charm, and we would definitely return.

Just booked my third vacation stay at Rivera del Rio; I couldn't be more excited. I'm looking forward to seeing our gracious accommodating hosts, Alex and Chio. This place truly feels like my second home. It is so comfortable and you are treated like one of the family. Each room is unique and beautiful. The beds are amazing and the had painted walls are stunning. The terrace jacuzzi tub will makes you feel like royalty.
It's only a few blocks walk to the beach and all the fun bars and great restaurants. Don't hesitate to book your next stay in PV here. I've stayed here on my own and with a large group and each time was perfect! This next trip will be a romantic getaway!!
