Getting to the River del Rio from the airport was a real adventure. We hired an official taxi at the airport (read:big bucks), thinking that we would get reliable service. Wrong! The driver got us in
the general vicinity of the boutique hotel, but could not find it. He asked perhaps a dozen other taxi drivers and locals before finally arriving. Elapsed time: about 1 1/2 hours (for a 25 minute trip). We were totally frazzled after this ordeal and flying all day.
Alexander, the young owner, welcomed us with a wet towel, guacamole with chips, coconut, and offered us a margarita (which we declined)--very nice reception! He sat us down and gave us more information than we could process. Importantly, he marked a map that allowed us to find an ATM to get pesos and find a vegetarian restaurant where we would eat dinner.
Rivera del Rio is located at the edge of the Cuale River in a residential neighborhood right in the old city. It is totally convenient to restaurants and tourist attractions. The renovated hotel has the feel of a mansion, with several floors containing four suites and four rooms, with a common kitchen. Special amenities include an inside and outside pool, jacuzzi, air conditioning, cable TV, wi-fi, and a purified water system. Also included is a freshly prepared breakfast, and calls to the U.S. and Canada.
The normal time for breakfast is 9-11 AM, but when Alexander learned how early we woke up each morning, he offered to serve us breakfast at 8 AM, an offer that we greatly appreciated and immediately accepted. Although routinely accommodating mainstream diets, Alexander did not hesitate to take on the challenge of our vegan diet. His cook prepared us vegan breakfasts that were nutritious, satisfying and simple. It was obvious that they had acquired special food items especially for us, like almond milk and tofu.
Our room,Maria-was on the second floor, accessible by elevator or stairs. The public kitchen and inside and outside dining rooms are on this floor. Our spacious lavender rooms is boldly and unusually appointed. An unusual configuration is the claw foot bathtub built into the walls separating the sleeping area from the bathroom, with shower curtains on both sides. there was an abundance of storage space. the king size bed was extremely comfortable, and we slept well all four nights.
In Puerata vallarta, if you want comfort, an individualist room with character, a freshly made breakfast each morning in the city center, we strongly recommend the Rivera del Rio.
