“very clean but old”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2013

Let me begin by saying this was our second time in Puerto Vallarta, first time was at Canto Del Sol and we knew Villas Vallarta is only a 3 star hotel.
Cons:
Bare light bulb in the bathroom and I could see straight through to the outside through the hole in the ceiling. We needed 3 new bulbs in the first 2 days in various places. The hairdryer was also missing from our room (619) but they provided one in short order (and made darned sure that it was still there when we checked out).
I had to practically beg the front desk for a room near the pool but after much conversation back and forth (in Spanish) the two desk clerks gave us a room overlooking the pool on the second floor. Our room had a small kitchen with a fridge but the sign on the wall said that the use of the kitchen appliances was restricted to time-share owners only. The food is so-so at either Villas or Canto. Between them they have 3 al-a-carte restaurants. The best I would say is the Italian only because my parmesan chicken dish was really good. The Grill boasts filet mignon, spicy fish, ribs, t-bone steaks and a mixed grill with mexican sausage. Sausage is just another name for weiners and they show up in many dishes at the buffett. Don't expect Alberta beef at the Grill but but my "filet" was tender. If Westjet offers you a city tour, free of not, I would advise against it. The tour guide will take you directly to too many expensive stores where you spend too much time instead of touring the city. Included is a tequila tasting experience which is fun but after that, you are expected to order lunch from the tequila business owners. Ours was really pricey so we just had a beer and a coke. If your not eating, there is nothing to do but wait however, the bus trip into the mountains was very nice.
Pros:
This really is a clean hotel and the lobby and staircases are lovely. The staff (except for the front desk) is exceptionally friendly. Our balcony was huge and offered 2 chairs with still plenty of room. The king sized bed was very comfy with high quality pure white sheets. The location of Villas Vallarta was perfect. Mega store is about three blocks to the south, Soriana 3 blocks to the north, Walmart is walkable in about 40 minutes but it's entirely do-able, same with Costco if you are up for it in the heat as well as downtown and the Melacon. We walked back from the "romantic zone" in 30 minutes. Try the bus! It's so much fun and it goes everywhere. Take the one called TUNEL and you see another side of PV. It stops in the romantic zone and only three blocks to the ocean but HOLD ON, these things practically fly! The nightly entertainment at Canto is quite professional and enjoyable and the pool there is beautiful. Really pleased that we could go back and forth between the two hotels. The pool at Villas Vallarta is quiet and restful with its own bar. The drinks are good and they will try to make anything you ask for.

If we visit PV again, I don't think I would stay at Villas Vallarta again. It's just too old.

Seriously I cannot believe some of the negative reviews for Villas Vallarta. Obviously these people don't travel much or expect 5 star service and accomodations for a 3 star price.
TRUTH: This hotel is a 3 star, located in a busy section of town and it is old.
It's not a cushy resort, but basic and clean. The staff is great, if you can manage to dodge the timeshare people. Just tell them up front that you are bankrupt or have no credit, or are not 'a couple'... whatever. They are only looking ot earn a living like everybody else. That is I think the worst part of staying there.

We travelled there end of November, got in late evening and were put in a room that looked like it hadn't been used for a long time. It was by the staff elevator and although it had a huge balcony, it was dusty and noisy. In the morning we changed rooms... no problem whatsoever.
No evidence of bedbugs anywhere, and our cleaning lady was super thorough.
This hotel is huge enough that no one should have to stay in a room they are not happy with.
Our second room was overlooking the pool, far enough over that our balcony was very private and quiet.

Our package included use of Canto Del Sol, which we did on a daily basis. We have stayed there before but found it to be sometimes noisy depending on where your room was.
Food was ok, my favorites were actually the snack bar tacos made fresh by the pool. Delish!

Our deal was soooo reasonable... our entire westjet package for 2 weeks was same price as 2 flights, so almost like staying and eating and drinking for free... watch the deals and book about 6 weeks before your holiday, and always before the xmas rush.
We toured around on the bus and did a couple day trips. One to Mariettas island was particularly great, saw whales, dolphins, sea turtles and went to a hidden beach.
Puerto Vallarta has alot to offer, much of it off the beaten track.
We also found a wonderful dentist and paid less than 1/3 for our dental work which was excellent.

This check in was not express, do not pay for that option. The front desk personnel were not friendly and did not crack a smile. Once it became apparent we were not willing to sit through the timeshare presentation our service went downhill.
The rooms were dirty and run down. The lights did not 'always' work and hot water came and went in spurts. The cleaning staff however were friendly.
The food was excellent over at the canto del sol and was hardly edible at the villas. The only meal offered at the villas was breakfast.
The sister hotel is very close and you spend all your time there (it is like walking from your living room to your kitchen)
The villas is very noisy. On one side you have the golds gym, the other the Main Street and finally the back side where you listen to the secrets hotel until 3am.
It is a close taxi ride to the market and marina for excursions....a cheap 5 USD.
The evening shows rate very high and the drinks were not watered down.
I would not stay at the Villas again.

Nice clean rooms, beach very near by. Pool was perfect, nice and quiet!! We had a king Junior suite with a kitchenette and balcony. Breakfast needed some variety from day to day. Soon after you are in your room you will get a call with information on how to get your "pool towel keys" Once you go to the lobby to pickup keys/passes, you get hit hard with upgrades/all inclusive and timeshare opportunities.....lol..... I suggest to just grab and go

We stayed at the villas for 7 nights and had a great time. Its the best of both worlds if you want to party you go across the street to it sister hotel and eat, drink, party. when you want to relax go to the roof top pool at the villas its very relaxing. There is a poolside bar with a very nice bar tender (i promise you will never go without a drink). We asked for a poolside room and the girl behind the desk said no problem, the room was clean and everything worked as it should. We had a little fridge, microwave, coffee maker ect. The pool was about 10 ft from our room and we had 2 loungers. The canto del sol had very good food and its easy to get a drink. we like to sit on the sea wall and shop, we would sit on the wall and drink and they would take turns trying to sell us stuff. Some guest were rude and tell them to go away but we enjoyed them they were funny and we ended up buying lots. Just a tip if the guy wants to sell you a hat or whatever for $30 you can get him down to $12.
Check out was fast and they didnt want a cent from us , the girl behind the desk is very helpful and we enjoyed talking to her (we gave her a $20 tip and told her she was doing a very good job). We travel to pv alot and i can say this was the most relaxing hotel i ever stayed at.

Room Tip: If you need anything go to the beach but prepare to hagle

Not a good place to stay. fist of all they mis lead on their website and they really having nothing to do with canto de sol, they actually won't even let you go over there and use their property. Second they did have keys for our room and we had to ask for someone to open our room every time we wanted in our room. The room was clean, but very kitchy and smelled very bad. no view unless you like a parking lot. There is nothing at the place except a small pool and a free breakfast. No bar, no other restaurant. If you like Jersey shore then you might like this place. We checked out after on night and had no regrets on losing the money for the other 2 nights we paid for.

This was our first trip to Puerto Vallarta and we had an amazing time! We stayed at Villas Vallarta but you spend all your time at Canto Del Sol. There is only 1 small pool and the restaurant was very simple at the Villas; all we did there was sleep. I’m posting under both hotels.

Currency:
You get a much better deal using Pecos. Just a short walk out the hotel there is a HSBC; local ATM’s have higher service fees. Tipping is not required while on the resort, but there were a few employees who deserved it. Whoever we tipped seemed very happy with any amount given.

Travel:
(Don’t forget a pen) WJ flights are always enjoyable; if you are a TV watcher, the satellite TV’s stop working somewhere in Texas. After you clear Mexican immigration – DO NOT STOP WALKING UNTIL YOU SEE A WESTJET REPRESENTATIVE. They will be wearing WJ shirts and have signs. There will be a lot of people telling you that they represent WJ and your hotel – they don’t! They are trying to sell you travel, tours, and timeshares. They are VERY pushy, you need to be rude and push past them. We went to the flea-market and the boardwalk; we even went into a local nightclub one night and felt very safe. Taxis are $50pecos into the downtown. Of the 8 cabs we were in, only 3 had seatbelts. If you’re a very nervous traveler know that the drivers are crazy, fun, but crazy.

Hotel:
The hotel rooms were a great deal for the price. The hotel(s) don’t have a lot of “extras”, it more than makes up for it with its staff. I really can’t say enough about how good they are. The pool was really warm (bathtub warm), there are two small kids’ pools and one big pool at Canta. We only spent a few hours on the beach. There are a limited number of lounges and they are very shaded. The beach is narrow at the hotel and very rocky in the water. At night you can’t walk on the beach. Beach vendors will approach you even when inside the hotel’s roped-off area. They do accept “no thank you” but you have to shoo one away every few minutes.
