“off the beaten path...”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

We were at the Casa Iguana for a week in February. This was our second visit there - the first being several years ago. Things had certainly changed. The last time the place was bustling - with busy poolside, bar and restaurant activity and a nice comraderie among guests. This year we had the place to ourselves. It felt like we were 'between seasons'. The place is under new management and as such, there were some glitches... hot tub not always hot, restaurant and bar not fully stocked or attended. HOWEVER, that being said.... we really enjoy this 'off the beaten path' resort . The staff is so nice... they go out of their way to accommodate and be helpful. The grounds are beautiful and well-maintained. We had a good breakfast everyday - cooked to order. The bus ride to town or to the Botanical Gardens is easy. The town of Mismaloya is quiet - but with a couple of good restaurants: El Patio and Tony's. The surroundings are lush - with interesting bird watching and flower viewing. The walk to the beach is less than five minutes - though we didn't swim there as the water was cold during the time we were there. Puerto Vallarta - though a great town - was madness during these late days of winter. We were happy to return 'home' to Casa Iguana after a busy day of touring or shopping. If we get back to PV, we'll return to the Casa Iguana for the restfulness and friendliness it affords.

Room Tip: We prefer one of the top floors and the end away from the office. There are not elevators so a lowe...

My wife and I stayed at Casa Iguana from Feb 4 to 18 and as usual we were not dissapointed. Although the staff were new to us this year it seemed like we'd known them for a long time. We love Casa Iguana and this year was no exception as we practically had the whole place to ourselves. The grounds were beautifully kept as usual and we enjoyed the peace and quiet everyday. We ate at the restauarant almost everyday and the food was great as always. We especially enjoyed spending our days with the hotel cat. We had seen her several years before and were happy that she is still there and still loveable. We hope that everyone who stays there treats her well and maybe feeds her also. I want to thank the entire staff for their hospitality and we look forward to going back every year for many years to come. If you're looking for a nice quiet place that is safe and has all the amenities you need right there, I highly recommend Casa Iguana. And lastly, check out the town while you're there. Stop by Tony's and have a meal and I promise you will love it, go to the beach for the day or just hang by the pool and order up pool service from the restaurant. We'll be back!

Room Tip: We always stay in 415 as we enjoy the view and privacy.

We have just spent another wonderful two weeks at the Casa Iguana Hotel in beautiful Mismaloya. This was our fourth visit and by far the best. Most of the hotel staff is new this year. Their friendly, caring and accommodating manner was a pleasure to observe. Without exception all were very attentive to our needs at all times. Jose, the reservations manager had many new suggestions for us to try such as the Ocean Grill restaurant which was opened about a year ago. As usual, the suites and grounds were exceptionally well maintained and we enjoyed using the lovely pool and hot tub every day.

The restaurant on the premises is under new management and is now called La Enredadera. The chef and his staff provide great breakfasts and lunches and, although we did not eat dinner there we were told by others that their evening meals are just as good.

If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing stay in the area of Puerto Vallarta, we highly recommend Casa Iguana Hotel and Suites.

Room Tip: We enjoy the corner suites on a higher floor but for those who have difficulty with stairs we sugges...

While stopping in PV during a cruise we had the fortune to stumble across this wonderful place. The grounds were impeccable and set within the beauty of the Jungle. We spent most of our day here enjoying incredible margaritas, eating shrimp fajitias, and swimming in the pool. The location is quaint and has you feeling like a local. Great access to all of the local attractions and the service was some of the best I have ever received. This is not a huge party resort but an intimate and beautiful stop. A great place to stop by for the day.

While not staying in the Casa Iguana Hotel we did have the pleasure of dining at the Serrano Restaurant one evening during our stay in the Misaloya area. An absolute delight and the manager/seronader Jorge was such a dleight. Wonderful food and an overall grand experience. While dining we could not help but admire the grounds of the Casa Iguana Hotel and if the interior is equal to the grounds and outside condition I'm positive the facilities would most definatley appeal to those who want a little hide away from the all inclusive or party areas of PV

This is our third visit to the beautiful Mismaloya and to the Casa Iguana Hotel.
Mismaloya is a friendly village situated a 5 minutes walk from the sea and the lovely Playa Mismaloya beach. It’s a 20 minute, 7 peso bus ride south of Puerto Valarta making it a perfect base for enjoying both the holiday atmosphere of Puerto Valarta, the rural laid back experience of a typical Mexican village set in the jungle or listening to the waves roll onto the golden sand.

A perfect place to stay in Mismaloya is the Casa Iguana, an attractive 4 storey hotel positioned at the bottom end of the village and across the road from the amazingly clear Mismaloya river. Most of the Mismaloya rooms are suites consisting of a sitting room, bathroom, 2 bedrooms and a kitchen with a fridge, 2 burner stove and kitchen utensils. These rooms surround an exquisite landscaped swimming pool and jacuzi; the hotel’s position at the base of a soaring jungle backdrop lends a sense of escapism when staying at this hotel. On top of this near perfect experience is the top notch service offered by all of the staff whether it is the manager, the front desk staff or the maintenance people, every request is responded to quickly and effectively making this a happy place to stay. The manger, made our wedding anniversary even more perfect by booking us the best table at Le Kliff restaurant. The extra touches to our suite provide by the cleaning staff made our return to the room after a long day of touring or sitting by the pool a very pleasant experience.

We highly recommend the Casa Iguana Hotel for its peaceful surroundings and its ideal location.

Room Tip: We prefer a suite on the upper floors. Great place for viewing the sun set.

I have been coming here since it opened. It has been a healing, saving grace for me. I noticed the beginning of the decline when a wealthy Guadalajara family bought it about a year and a half ago. They closed down the laundry room, causing us take the 20 minute journey into town to get our laundry done and then return to pick it up. The Guadalajara management also shut down the computer room. Not all of us have laptops. The WiFi service does not reach all the rooms. When I mentioned this to the "manager", who is a cousin of one of the owners, she did not know. The hot tub, which worked wonderfully under the old management no longer works properly. It is never filled to capacity. Also, it is always cold.

What really frightened me, however, was the type of people that the "manager" tolerates, much to the frustration of the excellent staff and other guests. There was a very noisy family whose five children were still screaming in the pool at 7:00PM at night and only stopped when the manager told them it was time to settle down.

That same family allowed their three-year old son to run around the pool area naked. The naked child was also permitted to sit in the whirlpool naked. Other guests and I felt very uncomfortable with that. So did the staff. Also, there is a clear sign that no children are allowed in the whirlpool. However, this was never enforced. Guests wantonly ignored it. I do not fault management, as their hands are tied by the "manager", their boss. Under the previous management, this and other noise issues would have been strictly enforced.

Late at night, after 11:00PM the adults were yelling and screaming on the balcony, obviouslly drunk. I called the security guard and was promptly told there was no rule concerning noise. Rather than argue with him, I simply hung up in his face. There is a noise policy posted in the rooms. However, it is not posted prominently. Its small print is hard to read. There is one version in Spanish and an entirely different one in English. In short, there is great confusion of noise policy. The guard insisted that I change my room the following morning, which I did. However, I failed to see how that would help and protect me against the unpredictability of drunken guests. I also noted that the family was gone the next morning. They were planning to stay longer. Did they get kicked out again only to be tolerated again? I do not think I want to take the chance, especially when the security guard was afraid to stand up to them or even politely suggest that they turn down the volume or go inside the apartment.

The fact that the family was gone was interesting, as I heard from reliable hotel sources that they are regulars with their regular bad behavior. I heard that "Management" has kicked them out before but allows them to come back.

The staff, including the gardener, maintenance, housekeeping and desk staff are doing an excellent job befitting the service of a 5 star hotel in spite of all these obstacles and egregious lack of managerial support. The "Manager" is never on sight. If you speak to her when she is on th epremises, she claims not to know what is going on.

Given the type of behavior that seems to be tolerated by management and with the staff's hands tied to do anything about it, I am afraid that I will have to find another paradise. My paradise is being invaded by indifferent management who tolerates loud drunks after 11:00PM and naked children running around in all areas, even those where there is a clear sign that even children wearing bathing suits are not allowed.

There is also a conflict with the hotel and the town concerning the use of a courtyard backing up against the wing opposite the office. When there is an event there, which is frequent, you can forget about getting to sleep before 2:00AM. If there is not an event, there is always a soccer game and an aerobic dance class going on in the late afternoon or early evening, making the room rather uninhabitable if you are looking for peace and quiet or an afternoon nap. There does not seem to be a solution to this problem. I did not have this noise problem until the current management took over. I gather from sources that the previous management worked out something with the town on this issue. Now, anything goes. Over a long weekend, there was a birthday party that I was told would last until 4:00AM. Fortunately, it was over a little after 2:00AM

The jungle paradise will soon turn into a green hell unless the indifferent, fatcat owners in Guadalajara, a four hour drive from Puerto Vallarta, get their act together and start running the place like a resort instead of a welfare hotel.

Room Tip: My review says it all. Do not get a room in the wing opposite the office
