My husband and I stayed week of July 14th. The rooms are beautiful and the resort is also. Unfortunately it was vacation for Mexican citizens and their kids. I have never seen or heard so many screaming children. You can hear everything in your room. We were woke up every morning by noisy children, either screaming next door or outside. I would have stayed at Secrets next door if I had known better. We enjoyed the food at the French and Japanese restaurants. The buffet was average and nothing special, the Mexican restaurant food was just awful and the Italian restaurant had terrible service we left early because we got tired of waiting for someone to come to our table. Also had to call twice to get our room cleaned. The cleaning lady never did show up.

Room Tip: I wished I would have got a swim out room. There were many days I wished I could just go out and sit in water. Or a room high up and away from elevators because of the outside, screaming kids and elevator noise.

Dear DebbieMc1960,

On behalf of Now Amber Puerto Vallarta and staff we would like to express our sincere apologies for not fulfilling your expectations. We honestly regret that you did not enjoy your stay with us; please understand that it is not easy to control the noise of kids on vacation; of course if they go beyond control, destructing furniture or wild behavior we always take measures to secure other guests comfort.

Be sure that our staff from our Italian Restaurant does their very best to greet you as you deserve and sometimes it can become challenging to serve over 200 guests at on time.

The housekeeping lady makes sure that our guests have their rooms cleaned once every day and confirms that no guests are in the suites with our light system in the door.

Once again, we regret that your stay with us was not entirely of your satisfaction. We truly hope that these inconveniences will not stop you from coming to visit us once again.

We look forward to welcome you to this your home!

Sincerely,

Mauricio Martinez

My mom and I (27y/female) stayed in the Now Amber at the Preferred Suites from July 13 to July 20. It was a great experience. We had stayed in the area before near Punta de Mita and enjoyed it but overall we found this resort much much better. (We stayed in the Royal Suites section of the Palladium last time)

This resort is adjacent to the Secrets and they are connected via beach and matching lobbies, they share restaurants and everything else except pool areas, the only difference is price and secrets does not allow kids, I recommend booking the Now amber to save money even if you prefer adults only. The two lobbies are raised and overlooking the resort and are a wonderful place to relax with a nice breeze blowing through and a bar w/ waiter service.

Check-in was fairly easy, as a preferred club guest we got escorted down to the preferred suite lobby which is down in the resort rather than in the main tower's lobby (Preferred Club is closer to the beach, nicer suites, its own bar, and building they also ALL have a Jacuzzi tub on their balconies except for the swim up suites)

The only small problem with check in is after you check in they give you coupons which are okay, if you plan on using their spa services or private romantic dinners, you can get I think 40 dollars off. They will give you about 400 dollars worth of coupons but you can only use one at once and they are split up into small denominations, while the VIP services explains this they will attempt to convince you to come to a time share pitch meeting where you can get another spa gift certificate. Anyone from VIP services is trying to sell you their Vacation Club package (which as I understand is basically paying a large sum of money to get guaranteed vacation time at any of their resorts for something like 10 years but no airfair included) If you’re interested in that sort of thing its fine and i think they will give you some other nice perks while trying to pitch it to you. I told them no right away and as I know what they were on about before I got there and did not have much trouble, they did call us once the morning after check in to ask if we wanted to attend and I said no and that was the end of it. If your firm the first time it’s not really much of a bother, I have read that some people have more problems but really this was the only very minor negative of the whole experience, our sunwing guide also warned us that the hotel was known for aggressively pitching their time shares. I will strongly note that this was not very big of a deal once we said no and showed no interest- as long as you do that you will have a great time here as well :)

The room was beautiful, double sinks and a tub inside the room as well as a shower, and the Jacuzzi outside on the balcony. The bathroom is intergraded into the room but has beautiful wood paneling that can be slid into place to block the room off and provide more privacy for the wash room area. The amenities inside the room were wonderful- the robes and slippers luxurious, and the products provided for bath and shower were very generous, larger bottles and they even provided us with a toothbrush and toothpaste on turn down the first night, a comb- and more! it was quite nice. The mini bar was stocked up regularly, the only times it wasn't was when we had our "do not disturb" light on for most of the day until late afternoon. In addition to using this light system instead of a doorknob hanger- they also have a light to request made service- you flick it on when you're leaving your room for the day if you happened to miss maid service- and they will come while your gone and tidy up, and reset the switch. Its quite nifty and we found it very useful as we slept in until noon most days!

The view from our 5th floor Preferred club room was amazing, it looked out onto the bay and mountains and resort, I kept waking up every morning and taking a new picture because it just looked so spectacular.

The Pool area on the Now Amber Side was fairly busy and bustling with families and kids, lots of locals and there was always activities going on. the pools we really nice and it was still easy to find a spot on the edge of the pool to keep cool while the waiter brought you drinks- they had a swim up bar in the main pool that adults would normally keep to as well. The other 2 pools on the Now Amber side were more for play and kids - that’s fine we didn’t mind too much, even with the activity it was never to loud and there was never anyone screaming or anything like that.

The Pool area of the secrets side was quite lovely- much more quiet and more sun beds, and all the pools were a little easier to relax in. One of the smaller pools had stone sun beds in it to lounge on in the water. It was quite lovely. To make use of the Secrets side of the resort you can walk a couple meters in the sand or you can go through the lobbies of the Now amber and Secrets (this is a pretty long trek from the Preferred Club) so as long as you don’t mind a little sand it was no big deal.

The restaurants were all lovely, and had very good service, we only had a small hiccup with service while visiting their Mexican restaurant maybe a little too close to closing, there was a large group seated beside us who wanted a lot of extra attention and it took up our waiters attention, but the rest of the staff still tried to keep us happy and we didn’t mind all that much. Otherwise the staff in the restaraunts were all very nice and lovely, and often remembered us. The Food was really delicious, Even if you didn’t find anything that really appealed to you on a menu in the ala carts there was always a steak dish that was done to perfection. The deserts and appetizers were quite nice and the buffet was much better than I have seen, they have chefs waiting to cook special things up for you and lots of dishes already prepared- I found really all the meat dishes to be quite tasty and all well cooked. The desert selection at the buffet was fairly impressive and non-standard.

The beach area did have vendors but they weren’t much of a bother- you just don’t respond or if your right on the beach tell them no firmly and they leave you alone. There is security always on the beach also to ensure they aren’t bothering anyone, I expected this to be a problem but it really wasn’t at all, even when i went out to the ocean a few times to dip my feet in once I said no and walked past them no one bothered me once. There was only ever 2-4 at once in front of the resorts beach.

A note on location: the resort is about 15 minute drive during rush hour to the airport, and about 5-10 minutes from downtown and the malecon, this was great, we went out a couple times to the flea market although it was so hot in July it’s hard to wander far! It only costs about 60 pesos (about 4-5 dollars) to go anywhere downtown- and you can get a cheaper fair coming back.

The staff here was really quite exceptional and friendly, they all seem to make an extra effort and seem very well trained. We did tip a fair amount- our maid service and bartender/waiters not every time but often about a dollar a time, and we tipped pretty much every visit to a restaurant about 2-4 dollars. You don't have to do this and it seemed most people were not but of course you PROBABLY get better service and I'm sure they appreciate it greatly.

Overall we had a really great visit, our goal was mostly just to relax by the pool and read and that was certainly accomplished. Everything was more than expected and we would definitely go back or go to another NOW/Secrets property to try it out after our stay went so well.

Room Tip: If your staying in perferred club any floor 5 and above is really nice for view. The 5th floor (it has a hallway thats open to the outside) was close to the hotel next door's AC unit but we could hardly hear it once inside the room and It did not bother us at all.

After reading the reviews, we expected to find a true 5 star hotel with over standing service throughout. Unfortunately, we found a rather mediocre hotel in most aspects. Service from employees was generally attentive but slow. It is fair to say that most of them are friendly, with some exceptions, especially at the front desk, for example: We were two in a room and we were denied to have a key per person arguing "hotel policies" there was no argument that would make them help us. Of course, we asked in a correct and cordial fashion (no stress appreciated when one is traveling). But even so, no more than one key per room. Tips are not only well appreciated, but fundamental if you want things to work. It is an all-inclusive resort, food is nothing extraordinary; pools and green areas are nice and well spaced-out, nothing to be excited about. Complimentary Internet was much appreciated. The hotel is at a good 30 - 40 minutes walking to charming downtown, and no, it is not a pleasant walk unless you enjoy walking on a busy street full of old buses and honking traffic. The hotel is brand new, and rooms fairly well appointed. But I would not come back, having some (not too many) better choices to choose from in Puerto Vallarta.

Dear WorldYeye,

We truly appreciate your comments in regards to your recent stay with us which was not of your full satisfaction or expectations. It comes to my attention that you mentioned in your review that you were denied for a second key in our Reception Area; our policy states that we can provide with 2 set of keys per room. Please note that we will take preventive measure to avoid these types of situations with our future guests.

We understand that not all our guests enjoy of the traditional town of Puerto Vallarta, instead we offer many activities in our Resort such as our Mexican Fiesta, Caribbean Fiesta, Desires Sports & Bar Lounge, Aqua Activities with our entertainment staff and many more for our guests to enjoy during their vacations.

We honestly hope that you can give us the opportunity to serve you once more in the near future.

Kind regards,

Mauricio Martinez

We travel alot and the only hotel even close is La Costa in California as far as top of the line finnishes the resort is beyond beautiful. Bring long pants for any male over the age of 12 or they will not be allowed in any of the restaurants for dinner. My husband only brought Tommy Bahama Shirts and dressy shorts and ended up running around Mexico looking for size 48 pants. It was a little stressful. Being a beach resort we didn't expect such a strict dress code. But they only inforce it on the Americans and Canadian. That angered my teenagers to see spanish speaking guests in flip fops and shorts and tee shirts while they were being told their dress shorts and leather sandals were not acceptable. Food and drinks are very high end we stayed in the prefured section of the hotel only complaint was a strange foul smell by the elevator that improved as the week went on. Alex our Beach server was great and Carlos the food service supervisor took care of us as well. The Mexican resuraunt was the only one I wouldn't go back to the others were amazing. Kids and teen club were top notch. And private dinner on the beach is a must!!! All the guests we talked to had the same two complaints service was sometimes a little slow and there is no place to get even a bottle of water by the pool or beach after 5:30 ( pool bar closes at 5 servers take last orders around 5:30) that was hard when you get back from zip lining around 4:30 and the kids want a soda and Dad wants a beer and there is a dress code for the lobby bar. Overall the resort is a strong 9 out of 10 and for everyone wondering I will put it in caps THIS PART OF MEXICO FELT SAFER THEN ALOT OF PLACES IN AMERICA!!! Our hotel, flights, and excursion were filled with young families and the locals were helpful and kind we took cabs went to ATMs and Shoped outdoor markets never once were we nervous.

Loved it so much we’ve just re-booked for end of August! Need I say more? (I will anyway)

Pros:
• Wonderful staff that seem proud to please you. (Thanks Johann, little Juan, Alfredo and so many more!)
• The food! The wonderful dinners alone are worth the price of the room. The buffet is fairly standard with pretty much something for everyone. The restaurant desserts are yummy and hard to select just one! We enjoyed Oceana, Bordeaux, Himitsu, and Market Café in that order. I think the small portions are a good thing. You can always order more if you need to. House wine is good enough unless you are a real connoisseur.
• Beautiful décor, new so it is clean and things work.
• Comfy bed, great tubs and shower. Love the classic rock station!
• The little things: peephole, do not disturb switch, screen door on the patio, iPod dock.
• Lying beside your partner in a spa tub in the moonlight listening to the waves: priceless!
• A lot of activities: great yoga instructor, rifle shooting!, plenty for kids; well appointed and air conditioned fitness centre.
• close to town (30-40 min walk, $5 taxi) and airport (10-15 min taxi) and excursions

Cons:
• Nothing special about the linens & towels, although robes are nice. Need a place to hang the towels so they don’t need to be changed each day.
• The pool and beach area seemed almost busy at 30% occupancy and might be too crowded in busy season. No shade at swim up bar.
• If you want pristine beaches with crystal clear water, PV is not the place to go. They rake the beach, but it is rocky in the water and drops off quickly. Walking along the beach means scrambling over rock piles sometimes. The vendors can be annoying if you are in the front row of chairs or closer to the water.
• Early nights: pool closes at 8, lounges at 11, disco at 1 (maybe this is a pro)

Tips:
• All rooms are ocean view so don’t really need to pay extra. Higher floors = better view. Get at least above floor 3. (Some have said ocean view = higher floor)
• Preferred club is not really necessary. The little buffet and extra bar are not much of an advantage as there is food everywhere. The special check in might be more special during busy season. I doubt the “upgraded” amenities are really that much better.
• We did enjoy the private spa tub on the balcony that the suites have. This is in addition to the large Jacuzzi bathtub inside. (Another review said 6th flr master ocean view has a huge balcony. Other rooms all same size.)
• The swim out rooms might be nice if you want your own pool, but are not at all private.
• The VIP desk is the time share people. They will call you to show up. Be polite but firm. The “coupons” are not worth getting as they are for discounts on over priced extras that are not needed. (Same as in the airport. Walk right by those “officials” and out the door. See other reviews.)
• Spa looks lovely if you want to hang out inside for an afternoon, but the prices are out of my reach. You can get great massage in town or close by for $40 an hour or less. (Metamorfosis is worth the taxi into town.)
• Dress code for men in some restaurants: need long pants and close toed shoes. Women can be as skimpy as they like as long as it looks dressy!
• Wear some mosquito repellent if eating outside in the evening at the Market Café or the seaside Oceana. I was bitten several times. :(

Room Tip: • All rooms are ocean view. Higher floors = better view. Get at least above floor 3. (Some have said ocean view = higher floor) • Preferred club not really necessary. The little buffet and extra bar are not much of an advantage as there is food everywhere. The special check in might be more special during busy season. (Another review said 6th flr master ocean view has a huge balcony. Other rooms all same size.) • The swim out rooms might be nice if you want your own pool, but are not at all private. Farther from elevator = less noise from fans next door and more ocean wave sound
