Reviewed June 22, 2012

I recently stayed at this all inclusive hotel. The staff was outstanding! The hotel was very clean and nice. I have to say that our favorite person there was Miguel Moreno Becerra who was a server at the pool. He was always happy and friendly. We looked forward to going to the pool every day because of his great service. This place was so fun and not too big but not too small so the service was excellent. I highly recommend this place if you want to stay in a place where all the restaurants have good food and the staff is second to none. I also suggest talking to Scuba Lisa before you book any activities. She is very honest and helpful. I will stay at this hotel again and again. Thank you to Adrian also, he was very sweet and helpful! This hotel is the best!

Room Tip: Stay on the preferred side in Now Amber the staff is great.

The staff is great and the resort is beautiful, but not the greatest place to stay if you have kids. Kids are not aloud in three out of the five restaurants that they have. We were here for two weeks (sadly) we kept eating in the same two restaurants because that's all we could eat from with our baby!
Also we got food poisoning from the the scallops that weren't cook properly. The staff is great and the resort is modern and new but I would never ever, ever go back here again!
They just don't make it accommodating for families with children. They have baby-sitters to look after your kids so that you can eat at the restaurant that don't allow kids, but the point of going of going on vacation is to spend time with family and eat dinner together. I hate this resort. Too many rules And I got sick because they rush to cook food! Scallops and eggs were runny! Yuck!

This hotel was immaculate and had a wonderful location. The staff were very attentive and pleasant. The food was very good, and the house wines weren't bad at all, typically we find the wine undrinkable at most all inclusives. We would definitely return, our only complaint is that we travelled with children and some nights we had limited dining options as the Japanese restaurant is no kids, and they would also rotate other restaurants making them adults only. Since this hotel is connected to the adults only Secrets resort my thought would be all the restaurants on the Now Amber side should be kid friendly as any adults on the Now side are welcome to eat on the Secrets side for a kids free meal.

Room Tip: If you can upgrade get a swim out room!

Visited this new hotel May 2012. Wonderful customer service from Andres at check in to Fernando at poolside. Very comfortable room with modern furnishings. I found the firm bed to be comfortable. The coupon deal for visitors is ok if you plan to spend money on wine or spa treatments. You have to spend money to use the coupons. Not a great deal. Otherwise restaurants and facilities are top class!

Room Tip: I doubt there's a bad room in the place. It is a beautiful facility.

This is a new resort in PV which one must try! My husband and I travel quite often and have had the privilege of experiencing a wide range of hotels and resorts around the world. We've experienced an amazing five star in Cancun and in Los Cabo recently, but we both agree Now Amber has surpassed both of our expecations. The staff take such pride in their work and it really shows from management to the lobby bartenders, the wait staff, the chefs, to the entertainment team - everyone prides themselves on their work.

We've had some great conversation with the night time Now Amber Lobby bar staff. I'm so sorry I've forgotten their names! But what great personalities! Each night the lobby hosts such talented live music groups which adds to the great experiences the Now group provides to their guests.

Being from Vancouver we have access to award winning global cusine and have yet to experience a consistency which we can find easily at home- until we ate at the restaurants at Now. We are staying for seven days and are currently on day five; to date I've had the best breakfast and buffet and was impressed with the Himitsu restaurant. They make a teppanyaki that competes with the top Japanese restaurants we've been too at home. They provide great performances, amazing cuts of beef and a fantastic show! We've been to teppanyaki around North America and wow can the staff here compete! It was a great dinner!

I was blown away with our experience today at the French restaurant, Bordeaux, at the Secrets side of the resort. The wait staff, Alex- Alejandro, and manager (I forgot his name) were spectacular hosts and we will be coming back on Friday. We just had the best food I've ever experienced in Mexico. I felt so fortunate to be able to dine at such a fabulous restaurant for dinner, especially, considering, it is a part of the resort experience. Each appy was delightful and each main we tasted made our taste buds melt and considering I make wedding cakes as a part time job, the desserts were spectacular!

This resort will be the number one resort in PV very soon! Definitely take advantage of any opportunity you may have to visit here! The architecture of the resort is unsurpassed. The attention to detail from everyone at the resort begins at the moment you step onto the property. Each room is remarkable and beautifully designed!

We had the opportunity to meet Daniel Navarro, the resident manager, who made sure our stay was up to his personal best, and he did an amazing job of ensuring that it was! Since Now Amber has only opened in the past 3 months or so it seems that everyone is doing their very best to ensure each guest has an amazing experience. I definitely recommend spending your vacation experience at this resort as each day seems to be getting better then the last!

The entertainment team are doing a remarkable job in ensuring they include everyone with the daily activities. The conceirage and housekeeping have entertainment newsletters which they leave in each room that gives everyone the opportunity to know the days events before they even leave their room!

I'm positive I've left out the names of some fantastic staff members but it's so hard to remember when every moment stands out! I'm having the best time I've ever had in Mexico and would like to thank all the staff at the Now Amber and Secrets resorts in PV. Great Job! We will be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in the preferred club area and definitely recommend staying in this area. The second floor...

New Hotel in PV best food yet both a la carte and buffet all drinks top shelf good selection of wines. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful especially Johan in Concierge. We stayed in the preferred side best room so far on our trips down south. While the pool area is very good with lots of chairs etc the beach is bad typical for the area dont go to Puerto Vallarta (PV) for the beaches.
Thye beauty of this Hotel is that its 5mts walk away from thr bus and local stores we went into tthe town many times by bus 7 pesos each .Going to the Malecon on a Saturday night is a must to see real Mexican culture local theatre foods and all the families out at night entertainment free at the new ampitheatre, also they have a mass bicycle ride through the town. Lots to do and see.
always felt safe. Also went to the Marina but things are very quiet there off season. We have been to Dreams hotels before and this ne is right up there also nice that you can go to Secrets Hotel same complex.

Some time back my wife and I, along with another couple, had planned a trip to the Vallarta Palace in Nuevo Vallarta. Unbeknown to us the VP had plans to change over to a Hard Rock resort. As our time came near we were told that our reservations were being transferred to the Now Amber/Secrets Resort and Spa in Puerto Vallarta. After going through numerous phone calls, emails and information gathering our visit to PV was set. We arrived at the airport, found our transportation and made it to the Now Amber where we were greeted with “Welcome to your new home.” We were placed in rooms in the preferred section of the Now Amber on one of the upper floors. While talking to the concierge I found that our friends were scheduled to be on a different level but in the same building. He was very accommodating to us and arranged it so our friends were on the same level and down the hall.
The rooms were quite spacious. Having most all the amenities we have been accustomed to when traveling. The entry to the room came off and open-air passageway and we could look out over a neighboring resort. Occasionally we could hear activity from neighboring resorts but most often it would end around 11pm. We had read that some people had had difficulty sleeping on the hard beds. Not so for us. However, due to humidity I felt the need to take a shower upon waking every morning. The AC worked well but I feel that the AC system could have been designed better to remove humidity in the rooms. The shower in our room also needed a better design. It had a swing type door that leaked along the bottom edge. Also, you could not place the floor mat (towel) there. Either it would get soaked or be pushed out the way when opening the door. A sliding door would have been a better idea. Inside of the shower it was another story. Well designed (except for the water leaking out under the door) and spacious.
In our building there was a small lounge on the first floor behind reception. In the lounge there were a couple of tables a seating area with couches and a TV. Also along one wall was a buffet that generally served a selection of cold and warm foods. This selection changed regularly during the day (maybe 3-4 times/day). There was also a stairwell that lead up to the second floor bar/computer room. It was there mainly for the bartender to service both areas but we occasionally used it as well. One day we and our friends went over to the Secrets Preferred building to see if what we had read about chickens and dogs was true. Well, yes it is. There was someone’s home and a bar/restaurant near the beach. Chickens were wondering around the home and dogs were wandering around a trash pile where buses park during the night. The Secrets bar and lounge were on the same floor behind there reception area. Being there only once is not proof, but a quick look at their buffet and bar stock, it looked higher end than that at ‘Now’.
Yes we were on the family side of the facilities and yes we were all adults. So of course we would go over to the Secrets side of the resort to use the pools. To get there through the main lobbies was tedious. So we could either go out and along the beach or use the ‘secret’ door that connects the restaurants Castaways and Oceana. The sand along this section of PV is a large grained sand with rocks closer to the water. My wife likes to take walks and found the walking difficult and hot. Not at all like the beach in Nuevo Vallarta. I’m not sure the restaurant workers liked our walking through the ‘secret door’, but they were polite and smiled at the Gringos as they made their pilgrimage to pool. We generally could be found in the infinity pool with the swim-up bar. Here we meet a number of Palace transplants and shared experiences, lounged in the sun, sampled various concoctions, read out books (kindles), or slept.
The trinket salespeople were out on the sand trying to catch your eye, but unless you went to the boundary of where they were allowed, they did not cross it. There was also a group that offered banana boat rides or parachute rides. These people were not a part of the resort.
Service around the pool was good to fair. Some days there were enough servers and others not. Those that were there hustled to bring people drinks and/or food almost but not quite running from guest to guest. These servers earned any tips they were given. The bartender at the swim-up bar could have used some help at times. He would take care of people on the stools and the servers needing various refreshments to deliver.
Service throughout the resort is obviously a priority. All were friendly and courteous to the guests. It was also obvious however that a number of workers needed further training. For example, in restaurants servers should never pass through the doors to the kitchen empty handed. We often observed servers going either way empty handed. Another thing is that servers should try to anticipate the needs of a customer. One time while carrying a bowl of soup from a buffet line to my table I noticed a) that the tables had no spoons, b) there were no spoons on the buffet near the soup, c) two ladies at a near table had soup and pointed it out to a server when I was sitting down. Here’s what happened, after some delay the waiter brought spoons to the ladies and did not bring one to me. Did he not see that I too had a bowl of soup? Many other similar events took place that would simply make you scratch your head and wonder what was going on in theirs. We felt that many of these things could have been corrected with more and better training.

There were a number of staff members that we felt deserved recognition. I’m going to put these in alphabetical order so as not to offend any of them should they read this report. Alfredo, Preferred Building bartender and food attendant. Excellent service and personality, should be moved to one of the main lobby bars. Ecker, head waiter at Bordeaux and at the Market café. Always attendant at being sure service was the best from himself and his crew. Very professional demeanor. Edvin, Market Café , back waiter to another waiter. Young and hardworking to always improve his service to the guests. Took instructions well from his lead waiter. Gilberto, lead waiter/manager. Great personality. We encountered him on our first evening and then kept seeing him at other restaurants during our stay. Very helpful in dish and wine recommendations. Gil, waiter and tapenyaki (sp?) master at Himitsu, We ate here often, the sushi was fantastic! Great service with an extra appreciation in their welcome each time we returned. Guilermo, Himitsu, understudy to Gil. Eger to make sure your desires were met. Communicated well with us and provided great service. Heiremberto, lead waiter, Bordeaux and Market Café, Edvin’s leader. Great command of his English. Made sure Edvin and others were being sharp in their duties. Should be a Head waiter somewhere. Sylvester, food services manager. Saw him all over the resort most any tine of the day. Jumped in with the waiters on busy night in one of the restaurants. Opened a special bottle of wine we brought to share with our friends and offered him a glass. Before opening the wine he had it chilled to a proper temperature. After tasting the wine he expressed a favor full opinion of the wine. Suri, cocktail waitress in the Now Amber lobby. Never made a mistake in an order. Quickly brought us each order without forgetting whom ordered what. Great smile, great service. Yoana, restaurant greeter. Go to the Market café for breakfast each morning and you will meet her. What a bubble of personality. After our first visit she would greet us by ‘Good morning Mr. and Mrs. ______’ and a pleasantry each day. Always making the extra effort to ensure the guests had a positive start to their day. Many others helped to make our stay pleasurable but these individuals really stood out to us. Generally speaking we found that service on the ‘Secrets’ side of the resort to be at a higher level than on the ‘Now Amber’ side.
Now for the dining facilities and some of our choices. Oceana and Castaways share a common menu. Only difference is one is on the adult side and the other on the family side. Poolside lunch fair during the day, great food in the evenings. Skip the club sandwich at lunch and go anything else. It was severely lacking the club sandwich name. Salads, soups, seafood and the filet were all great at dinner. Himitsu had a great raw selection in sushi’s, nigari’s(sp?), and sashimi’s. The tempura tasted great but the batter was still a bit undercooked below the crisp crust (probably too thick). We ate here three times. Sometimes going elsewhere for desert. Capers is the Italian restaurant. Our experience here was less than enjoyable. Overcooked fish, non-tender veal cutlets caused us to dine there only once. They did do a good filet there though. Bordeaux for French cuisine. Best service restaurant on the property. Even the chef came out to greet the guests. For breakfast we found that the Market Café was superior to Carnival. The staff at Market Café was a few steps in front of that of Carnival. Carnival was always buffet for lunch or breakfast. Sometimes Market Café was ala cart and at others it was buffet. Try the ‘green juice’ at breakfast, we felt it was pretty good. We missed eating at the Tamarindo, Mexican, and the evening fair at Market Café, Mediterranean. Both menus looked good but we so enjoyed some of the other restaurants that we kept going back to them. Can’t go wrong ordering filets or shrimp dishes at any of the restaurants. Hamburgers and fries seemed to be the staple at poolside, but the fish taco’s were pretty good too. Never made use of Room Service dinning so we have no comments there.
The efforts by the staff to keep the resort looking good was great. Rooms were kept up daily with turn-downs in the evening. The maintenance of the grounds all around the resort never ceased. Sweeping here polishing there, constant attention to the facilities was noticeable. Poolside servers made great efforts to not only deliver your orders but to clear away service ware and other trash people left behind. Kudos to the poolside servers and the rest of the maintenance people.
I did notice a safety concern that the Resort may wish to address. Outside the gift shop and the silver shop are recessed patio areas. In a short time I observed three people not see these depressions and trip in them. I also noticed a woman at poolside one day in a wheelchair with and ice bag on her ankle. Did she also trip there?
Each evening the lobby area would acquire a following of guest to observe sundown. We even were able to enjoy a partial eclipse of the sun one evening. While sipping our libations we found it very relaxing to watch the sunsets before going to dinner.
As others have stated it is a beautiful resort. Great views, employees working hard to make your stay a pleasant one. Unfortunately there were still a number of staff members that needed further skills training. The big question is ‘would we go back to the Now/Secrets Resort’? As more people use the resort things should get better, but at this time - no. There’s a lot of room for improvement. Beware, at 25 – 35% capacity it seemed the pool was getting crowded at times.

Room Tip: Upper rooms - better views, lowest rooms - swim-out pool.
