We enjoyed staying at the Sunset Plaza. We had a great view of the ocean and enjoyed our lg deck. The service was the best ever, never had a butler before. Not much of a beach, but plenty of room by the pools. We had a 2 bdrm, 3 bath suite. Our king size bed was very comfortable. The only complaint I had was they needed new coffee pots. The one they have is a 4 cup, and you have to buy their coffee @ the price of $4.00. The location is very good also.

We loved this hotel. Every room has an ocean view with a balcony. The rooms are great.(a jacuzzi tub in the master bath). As with any new hotel/resort, there are still some bugs to be worked out (the balancing of the hot water demand/zones from the boiler room), but this is an engineering problem that can be easily resolved.

The staff was wonderful and friendly, especially two bellhops I nicknamed the twins (or twinkies), Gustavo and Eladio. Raymondo, another bellhop, and our butler, Ricardo, were also extremely helpful and friendly. Although we loved the hotel, it is the staff that has us looking forward to another visit at Sunset Plaza.

The only detriment I could find is the price of the food at the resort. It was very expensive, but there are plenty of good restaurants to visit in PV, many within walking distance (Blakes Sports Bar and Pregos Italian are just two of our favorites).

My wife and I stayed at the Sunset Plaza for a week and really enjoyed our time there. Overall, it is an excellent value and has the potential to be one of the best all-inclusive resorts you could probably go to. However, there are some things that prevent it from being "excellent". To be concise, here are the positives, negatives, and things to know:

Positives:
- Not a major push on the "timeshare". The concierge will mention it when you get your "hotel introduction", but didn't push us on going through the talk.
- Excellent Food @ Mirador - Very good, freshly prepared with excellent flavors. Gained some weight from all the good food I ate while I was there
- Bar/Drinks - very easy to keep them coming, but sometimes it helps to tip
- Rooms - excellent with great views over the ocean. Plenty of room on the balcony
- Pool & Chairs - There are plenty of chairs, no major need to reserve early in the day. Pool was great, love the infinity falloff into another pool below. There are about 15 pairs of chairs that sit in the pool itself.
- Spa - Great service and I would highly recommend the massage in the beach cabana (take advantage of the get 80 minutes but pay for only 60 minutes massage if you can!)
- Butlers - they do a good job overall. Dario was excellent! Gonzolo was good, but forgot to make our reservation for Luciano's (which should have told us something about that place! Just avoid it unless you want an "experience")

Negatives:
- Water temperature & pressure fluctuates - Hate to say it, but it does. Even when taking a cold shower after working out, it would switch to scalding hot with no warning (and nobody else in the room). Be careful!
- Meal Service - during our time there, the staff switched. You could tell they were trying to improve the service, but even still we had some long meals. Long meals = 2 hours. It was common for breakfast to take an hour, lunch about 45 minutes (depends on how busy it is), and dinner to be 1.5 hours. Now, it will take longer because everything is freshly prepared, but service could be improved. There were times we waited 45 minutes just to order!!! Other times it took 30 minutes before we got our drinks.
- Beach - it is rocky, especially compared to other beaches around the Caribbean. Lots of vendors and they do call out "senor" or "amigo" to get your attention. To me it was a minor annoyance, but not horrible.
- Luciano's - Many of us (being the guests) joked by the pool that it is an "experience". NOT A PLEASANT ONE! The night we went, we were the second couple to be seated. It took us two hours to finish our meal. A couple who came in right behind us still had not received their entree when we left. Another couple we met down there received the wrong food or had bad food. For my wife and I, we HATED our food. Her pasta wasn't even cooked (crunch pasta), my osobucco was nothing but fat, the mozzarella sticks were cold, the soup was cold, and salads came out with nothing on them (no dressing, nothing but lettuce and cheese). Desert was the only good thing about the place. Not worth going to.
- Shortages - How does a resort this size run out of canned beer, wine, and bottled water? Go figure, at some point in the week, they ran out of all of them. At dinner, they never had the prawns and ran out of the short ribs, filet, ribeye, and shrimp at some point during the week.
- small gym - two treadmills, an elliptical, a stair climber, three bikes, and a bench for weights. Nothing that special, and hope you understand spanish to use the equipment (but not too hard to figure out). Was completely busy at times during the week. Prop open the door to get some air circulation in there!!

Overall, this is a very good resort to stay at, but is not excellent. It has the potential to be though. I think this is a very realistic review where I focused more on the negatives because some people think this place is perfect. It's not, but if you know what the negatives are going in, you won't be shocked by them. All the positives that others mention are true for the most part. I really enjoyed the Sunset Plaza and would come back in the future!

I can't believe how negative a few of the reviews have been!!!! I have travelled around the world and easily rate this resort as a 5 star....my biggest shock is the poor reviews for the quality of food at Luciano's, the Italian restaurant,...obviously these reviews have been written by people who have no exposure to haute cuisine...the menu....the presentation of the food and the quality of the food was definitely among the best cuisine I have ever had..the table service improved significantly by the end of our week's stay...we found out that some head staff had been replaced which greatly improved the overall wait staff service...our 1bedroom ocean suite was impeccably decorated....our butlers Roberto and Pedro could not do enough for us....we tipped where we felt appropriate but we never felt that the service we recd from any staff diminished if we didn't tip them...the beach was beautiful...we were able to walk in both directions for a very long time...there are places where it is temporarily rocky but with our water shoes this was not a problem....the vendors on the beach work so very hard and I was happy to spend a few dollars on a lovely dress and several anklets...they were never rude or aggressive...the music was NEVER too loud!!! ..the sax player at the bar in the evening was a real pro....it was sooo romantic!!!...the spa service was the best I have ever had...we will definitely return very soon...this is definitely a 5 star resort ...don't listen to the negative comments...they are completely inaccurate!!!

We were very impressed with the facilities, service and food quality. Pools were beautiful, spa service (massage) was great, and all employees were very friendly, although constantly looking for tips which we provided abundantly. We unfortunately had an adjoining room with a smoker, so this was an annoyance. Water temperature did fluctuate in the shower and was hard to regulate. I would not recommend walking into the city on the beach....way too rocky. Also, we asked the concierge to recommend a seafood restaurant with local flair and she recommended the Blue Shrimp.....horrible food and service, and outrageously expensive. Overall a great resort with great people.

The resort was beyond words, it was beautiful, and for being brand new it had some ups and downs, but none worth mentioning. We were met by our butler Dario and he made us feel welcome as soon as we stepped through the door. His English is perfect.very knowledgeable,He is an excellent butler.
He met all our needs and more he even managed a room upgrade for my husbands birthday. He was the best butler we have ever had in all the time we have vacationed.
Everyone was so pleasant, called us by name.
Information we needed was there before we knew it.
The food and service was beyond fantastic. the pool staff everyday made us feel like we were the only people that were at the pool and they made everyone feel the same.
Door staff and security made us feel very secure and we will certainly recommend your hotel and staff to any travelling to Puerto Vallarta
Thank you so much
