“A Welcoming Haven”
Reviewed April 8, 2012

Hotel de Catedral proved to be a welcoming haven from a busy albeit fun and sun filled week long holiday in Puerta Vallerta. Excellent service doesn't happen by accident and accommodating foreign guests with different cultural expectations of what a hotel should be, can't be easy. But it is a business after all, and the responsibility starts at the top. With a genuine smile and charming demeanor that would do Mexican mamas proud, hard working manager Carlos de Leon makes running a successful hotel look effortless. Client requests are treated efficiently with respect sans drama. That same attitude is apparent in his friendly, knowledgeable and competent staff. Other reviews elevated my concern about the Cathedral bells interrupting a good night's sleep, but once there, didn't bother me at all. I brought ear plugs, just in case. If anything, the bells served as a sweetly gentle reminder of the stunning cathedral nearby. If your priorities are a breakfast buffet or elevators, don't go there. The 3rd floor room "El Ray" does not have a mini-fridge or coffee maker, but it does have the oft mentioned "sink in shower" set up that's more of a curiosity than a challenge. If you're into a free cup of coffee and cookie before 10 am, delightful Mexican decor, soothing ambiance, cell phone, some great views, entertaining and/or enlightening conversation, very clean room, fresh linen and towels, and a convenient location to the markets, beach, art, restaurants, Malecon, massage, banks, ATM's and other glorious sights and sounds of Puerto Vallerta, de Catedral is the truly cultural hotel experience for you mis amigos.

Listen, we stayed here for one night during a quick business trip. So, we were not looking for a resort hotel. This was very reasonable in price. We read good reviews. Upon checking in, we were greeted by a very friendly person. The common area was clean and somewhat charming. That was where the positives ended.
Our room faced an interior court yard, so anyone in the common area could look into our second floor room. Our room size was adequate in size and furnished with the essentials. So far, we were not surprised since the nightly rate was so reasonable.
We noticed an odor that smelled like old body oder. Our bed was hard and uncomfortable. In the bathroom, the sink was actually in the shower. Upon trying to take a shower, there was no hot water. After letting the water run to make it warmer, it gradually started to dwindle and eventually there was no water at all in the bathroom. It actually stopped running, including the toilet.
So, we got what we paid for. Next time we will spend more and stay at a resort. I do want to say that the staff at this hotel was very kind and always had a smile to share.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the street. Not the court yard

First I like to say that the room we stayed in is a standard 3* accomodation with a to small bed for 2 people, but with a safe in the room, kitchenette if you need one. and some pots and pans.
When we booked it last november thrue bookings.com we could choose between a room with a balcony or the penthouse. They are both the same price, so we thought the penthouse would be convienent for us so we would not have people living above us. 2 weeks before our arrival to Puerto Vallarta we received a mail from Carlos the owner that there was a little problem and he could not provide us the penthouse for the total stay of 11 nights and he gave us 3 offers.
1. stay 2 nights in a other room and mover later to the penthouse.
2. stay in the other room and get a free one way taxi ride from the airport to the hotel
3. get a free diner in a restaurant at the beach.

I replied.
1. Or you provide us with the room we booked
2. give us a better offer
3. We just cancel and look for some other hotel to stay, no worries!

Carlos replied, sorry to have spoiled your pre holiday fun and I make sure you get the penthouse!

So, we happily went on holidays.
We checked in and the lady at the reception askes us to pay the ammount for the stay in advance. I replied that she could make a copy of my credit card, but not the ammount for the stay.
We arrived in our room............... Not the penthouse with 2 balconies as discribed on the add! Not even a penthouse but some room at the 3rd floor. We asked for Victor and 1/2 hour later he arrived and told us this was the penthouse. I explaned him that a penthouse would be on top of the building and not having other rooms on the 4th floor.
My advice, Don't trust Victor!!!!! He tries to Convience you that he is right....... What a fraud!!! Would never ever go back again to his CASA Fraude!!

If you're looking for a hotel that's traditional Mexican and in the best location of the city, this is your hotel. Decorated traditional Mexican style, this hotel is small, with very small rooms, and even smaller bathrooms.

Location: The Hotel Catedral Vallarta is located two blocks from the ocean boardwalk, which is filled with restaurants, bars, tourist shops, and local artists. The boardwalk is a mecca of activity at night! I felt very lucky to be located so close to all the activity. The only time we needed a cab was to/from the airport and to take our canopy zipline tour.

Sleeping: Our "Superior Double" room had a full-size bed (which doesn't accommodate tall or large Americans very well), made with two pillows and a sheet. The pillows were horrendous, but they gave us a "pillow menu" to help us choose better ones. Upon request, they also gave us a blanket for our bed. The room temperature was easily controlled by using a ceiling fan (the settings for which were high and very high).

Bathrooms: The bathrooms here are tiny, which I've found is common for most Mexican hotels. The sink is located in the shower (behind the shower curtain), so you must step into the shower when you're washing your hands or brushing your teeth. They gave us homemade soaps, which didn't seem homemade at all, and mostly smelled like discount soap with a hint of chocolate or mint.

Noise: Our room didn't face the street, but we could still hear all the noise from the clubs. There was a ceiling fan and an AC/heater unit to help block the late-night noises. It did not block the sounds of our neighbors having late-night fun though. We woke up every morning around 7am, when the church bells start ringing.

Theft: Someone went through our things on our first full day here. Thankfully, we were smart enough to not leave anything in our room. They did provide us with a locked safe in the room, but it didn't seem secure or safe, so we ended up carrying our important documents and money with us at all times. I highly recommend this to anyone traveling in Mexico.

Safety: Overall, this hotel felt safe. It's located about two blocks from the ocean boardwalk, which felt like a safe walk at 2am. The entrances are locked after 11pm, but there was always someone at the front desk to open them up for us after our late nights.

Beach: This hotel doesn't have a pool, but we were happy to find out they offer free access to a local beach club (Amapa Sunset Beach Club). This "beach club" was probably the most crowded and worst looking one we saw. It was packed and only had a few beach chairs for guests. Also, you don't need an access card or even to tell them what hotel you're staying at...everyone is welcome at the Amapa Sunset Beach Club. We ended up getting some beach chairs at a bar/restaurant a few blocks away (beach chairs are free if you're buying drinks or food).

Concierge: Our concierge spoke only a few words in English, but tried very hard to figure out what we needed. We were not given the local cellular phone as was stated on the website. We were given a hairdryer for use while at the hotel. We found it was cheaper to get our own cab, than to have our concierge get us one (as cabs from the concierge cost 100-200 pesos more). Check in to our hotel was simple, as was checking out.

Overall, I'd recommend this hotel if you don't expect luxury and are only staying for a few days.

Room Tip: All the rooms listed as "double" are full size beds, and are usually too small for most Am...

This was our second stay at the Hotel Catedral and we couldn't have been happier... Clean rooms, good air conditioning, and a very pleasant environment. The hotel staff was first class and very friendly. The location of this hotel allows walking to almost any restaurant or cantina on the ocean. We will return to the Hotel Catedral on our next visit to Puerto Vallarta this December.

My husband and I are a young couple that stayed at this hotel from March 21st 'till March 25th of this year and it was great. The staff was above and beyond nice and helped us with every single question we had with a smile on their faces. The location of the hotel was great, we could walk to the Malecon where all the retaurants and bars are. The hotel is very rustic and colorfull. It had a great patio space that was comfortable to rest during the day after long walks. The only drawback was the noise from the street. The rooms are not quite sound proof, so if you wake easily at night, this might be an issue for you. Also, the hotel is 2 blocks away from the famous Vallarta Cathedral, so you will hear a bell sound every 30 minutes from the Cathedral. My husband and I got used to it and enjoyed our stay. I highly recommend this hotel for its friendly staff and great location. I can't wait to come back

Room Tip: rooms with patio view are quieter. All rooms are rustic and colorfull.

My wife, children and I just returned from PV. We had two wonderful nights at Hotal Catedral. The staff was fantastic and very helpful. We were not bothered by the noise. The bell does ring in the night, but did not keep us up. The location is great and easy to navigate around. Again, the staff was very helpful.

The room was clean and hot water worked fine after a little wait. Just what one needs for a nice stay.

A bonus is the roof area. We ate our breakfast up there and enjoyed looking out over the city with it all to ourselves in the morning. For the money this is a great little hotel and would definitely stay there again. Thanks again to the staff for being so helpful and flexible with our children.
