“Fantastic!”
Reviewed November 18, 2009

We stayed here early November and absolutely loved it! We stayed in the Maximilliano and had to use the AC room twice. No problem with mosquitoes or bugs. We did find the beds a little too hard, but we kind of got used to it and this is pretty standard in Mexico, it seems. We never wanted to leave the room! We saw most of the other rooms and they are all great. There are a lot of stairs and narrow hallways, although they didn't bother us. Despite all of the "openness" sound was surprisingly contained and noises from others didn't bother us. Breakfast was very good - same every morning but different options to choose from (various eggs, french toast) plus fruit, granola, yogurt. Great fresh orange juice. The pool is very small and 5 ft deep, although there is a ledge to sit on in the water. Not much room around the pool for chairs, but there is some. Like others have said, don't go here if the pool and swimming in the beach are most important to you. The walk to La Playita took us less than 10 minutes. We found the food just okay and would recommend going elsewhere if you have the time (but not El Set, another restaurant within walking distance), but the drinks are good. The walk into town along the beach took us about 15 minutes and is a nice walk. We spent a lot on cabs (50 or 60 pesos min each time); next time we would take the bus more - there is a stop at the top of the hill and down (away from town) the road just a bit. Staff were so friendly and helpful - Roberto was wonderful!

My partner and I stayed 5 nights at Quinta Maria Cortez (QMC) and had a wonderful stay in early October. The inn is a wonderful collection of ecclectic suites, all unique, that cascade down to an almost private cove. Yes, there are many steps (who needs a gym!) but all those steps are worth the effort and reward of staying at this charming B&B. The location south of town is the best as it is a short taxi ride into town with all its restaurants, clubs and shops (around $5 for the taxi ride each way) but you are staying in what is an exclusive residential area on narrow quiet cobblestone streets, with villas and boutique condos and hotels... just lovely!

The only time that the beach saw some sustained action was on Sunday when the local familes come out and enjoy the beach as well. If you are familiar with the beaches in Mexico with the annoying never ending sales pitch from vendors, you won't find that here. It is very relaxing. The beach right in front of QMC is sandy with rock formations on shore where you can find places for a dip and we also saw people snorkeling beyond the rocks. For some serious ocean swimming you just have to walk south about 2 minutes to a lovely stretch of sand.

The staff at QMC, particularly Robert and Jose, is very helpful with all your needs from restaurant and activity recommendations to other needs that may come up. You get a sense of their pride at offering you a great experience. Breakfast is very good, served al fresco under the palapa and cooked to order from fruit and yogurt to mexican specialties to basic american fare and all delicious. Julian is at the ready during breakfast providing excellent service.

Our experience was really wonderful and shared by mostly couples (both straight and gay) and quite a few honeymooners... this is quite a romantic place what with the ambiance and the gorgeous ocean views.

The Quinta Maria Cortez is a wondefull bed and breakfast with a uniquely styled interior and wonderful rooms so big that you can almost call them apartments, all the rooms come with refrigerators and most of the rooms have stoves. Breakfast is prepared to order everyday except Sunday and is delicious and filling. The people who work there are very nice and very helpful with any kind of tour arrangements. The hotel is located within walking distance of town, a 20 minute walk along the beach during the light of day will get you into Old town Vallarta and cabs are every where about $4 from old town restaurants back to the QMC. Can't beat it.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at La Quinta Maria Cortez and it was truly an amazing place. We spent 10 days and wish we could’ve stayed longer. We stayed in the Maximilliano and loved everything about it. Our room was warm since it was mostly open air, but it was never too warm where we had to sleep in the A/C room even in late June. Our room had some iguanas that liked to sunbath outside near our balcony. We had amazing sunsets from our room and amazing views of the bay and the ocean. We in essence had our own private beach as QMC is not located in a hotel zone and many of the surrounding buildings are amazing private villas. The beach right in front of the hotel is nice, but not good for swimming as there are many rocks and seaweed. If you walk 2 minutes south on the water there is a larger beach much better for swimming that we used daily.

We would always have breakfast at the hotel as they are included. We then usually went out to lunch or dinner and ate the other meal in our room. There are some nice grocery stores (Mega) that a taxi can take you to or right by the hotel is a Oxxo (Large 7 Eleven) that has quick meals.

It is a short and easy $5 cab ride into town or a somewhat challenging (depending on the temperature) and a little rocky 20 minute walk along the water.

The staff was amazing and very helpful. If you needed something they made sure to help you, but they never intruded on your privacy. The breakfasts were amazing! They are made to order and they are also a great place to meet the others staying at the hotel.

When we were deciding where to go on our honeymoon either the Caribbean or Mexico we wanted to find a hotel we liked before we chose our location. We read reviews of QMC (Quinta Maria Cortez) on Trip Advisor and in Lonely Planet. We were not disappointed and would recommend this hotel to anyone who isn’t looking for the package resort.

We tried to find things we didn’t like about the hotel and really couldn’t find any.

On a side note I brought my wedding dress for honeymoon pictures and we found an amazing photographer Paulina Ulloa who came to the hotel and took our pictures. We had a great time working with her and highly recommend her.

We broke right out in giggles when we pulled up to this quaint, little villa in Conchas Chinas, it's just so lovely. Then we were shown to our room by the FANTASTIC manager, Jose, who made us feel so very welcome - as if we were old friends who'd been there before. When we got a load of our room, our jaws dropped. A HUGE veranda all to ourselves. Floor to ceiling glass windows open directly on to a sea view and sea breeze. (There is an air conditioner but we never turned it on so we could appreciate the sound, smell and breeze from the ocean.) Antique tile and original appointments make QMC a little tucked-away treasure. Ask Jose for the tour of the place. Maria was quite a character and used this villa to entertain the stars back in the day. Almost all of the finishes, furniture and decorations are original. There is a sort of little cove-like area on the beach here between the rocks. Granted there's some seaweed - but it is clean and oh-so private. You won't feel like you're in a tourist town. A 10 minute beach-walk gets you to downtown. But why would you ever leave?

This is place is full of charm situated along the beach with great views. No worries about having your room resemble a beige box, each room is unique. The location seems a bit remote at first but you quickly find out how close to town it is and are thankful not to be staying in town. The manager, Jose, will help arrange outings and reservations - his suggestions are always good. I've recommended this place to several friends and all have come back thrilled with their stay.

Extraordinary sunsets on the roof, excellent breakfasts, great service night and day, flying sea birds over our heads, nice beach walkers, short walking distance from the crowded downtown area, original design for rooms (ours was the Rafael) and overall building cleanliness outstanding, what else could we ask for ? The only drawback: the ocean bay water sometimes smelled and looked dirty on top, mainly due to sewage outlets nearby (less than 500 meters). Swimming and snorkeling was much better in Riviera Maya. However, the Quinta Maria Cortez Hotel is a must place to stay on the Mexican Pacific Coast.
