“Once in a lifetime trip”
Reviewed March 14, 2009

The Quinta Maria Cortez is a true gem. It is a funky little boutique hotel that is just minutes away from the best beaches and restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. We had the best time exploring all the nooks and crannies of this crazy little bed and breakfast on a cliff. (I am not really sure they had any architectural plans when building this place - just lots of imagination).

The only room available for us when we reserved our space was the smallest room, the Jessica. It did not have the grand, sweeping, balcony views that the other rooms had, but it was also $100 a night cheaper - not a bad thing. It was still one of the best rooms I have ever been in. It had a sitting area, small kitchen, and loft bedroom with whimsical artwork, mexican tile, antique furniture, and candles throughout the space. It also had a fun window seat with a gorgeous view of the bay.

They served a luxurious breakfast every morning (except Sunday) on the beautiful palapa style balcony.

The walk to PV was about 20 minutes over some rocks - but it is very safe (stairs) and it is a good way to walk off the huge daily breakfast. I like the fact that it is on a secluded section of the beach but has close access to the more lively parts of the city. Plus it is only 5 buck by cab to town.

I would absolutely stay here again. But, if you have problems climbing stairs, this is not the place for you. Definitely not ADA compliant.

My husband and I just returned from an incredible week at the Quinta Maria Cortez. I stumbled across reviews for this amazingly unique property while trying to find a quiet hotel in Puerto Vallarta. We were very impressed with the photos and positive reviews, but even our very high expectations were exceeded when we arrived and saw the QMC for ourselves. It was absolutely the perfect place for us. If you are looking for a generic chain-hotel experience or a rocking time in the center of the PV resort action with loud music and an insane, Tequila-fueled pool scene, this place is completely wrong for you. We wanted something quiet, off the beaten track, away from crowds, kids, and partiers, and we were not disappointed. We loved the cool architecture of the villa. We stayed in the Maximiliano, the top floor suite. It was huge! There are 2 bedrooms, one is near the open air balcony, and that is where we spent every night. There is an air-conditioned bedroom also, but we didn't need it, since the weather was delightfully cool at night. I can imagine you might take advantage of the AC if staying in the summer. The suite is beautifully decorated with antiques and art from the area that have been collected over the years. We loved the older, artsy look that some reviewers describe as gothic. The beds are very comfortable. The living room was airy and comfortable, but we spent almost all of our time sitting on the balcony. Contrary to some of the comments in other reviews, the only "critter" we ever saw in our room was a little green lizard on the wall one morning. Not even so much as an ant showed up. It was wonderful to experience the perfect harmony of a beautiful suite open to the beauty of the beach and sky, the breeze, and the gently sound of the waves at night.
The staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive, but not intrusive at all. If you want recommendations for activities, dining, or excursions, Jose is happy to assist. If you want to spend all day relaxing in your suite, napping, and reading on the balcony, that is fine, too, and your privacy will be ensured. I have never met hotel staff that were so genuinely nice and friendly! Breakfast each morning is delicious and made to order. It is also a lot of fun to meet the other guests over the breakfast table. Other than seeing everyone at breakfast each morning, we felt that we had the whole place to ourselves. The beach is private, the pool is tiny but adequate for cooling off on a hot afternoon. There were no vendors this far down the beach, as opposed to the almost constant parade of them down on Los Muertos beach. We walked from the QMC to the malecon every single morning. It does only take about 15 minutes. While I would say it is too strenuous for the frail or elderly, it was not too bad for us. We found the walk beautiful and enjoyable. On several days we walked there and back twice, once in the morning to walk the malecon and shop in the Old Town, then again in the evening to go out to dinner. We did not walk home at night after dinner and I wouldn't recommend it. Walking through Los Muertos beach on the way is a hoot! Excellent people watching! One tip to make your beach walk to the malecon easier is to keep to the right side of the beach, on the side away from the water. Whenever you can, utilize the walkways and driveways that run in front of the villas on the way. There are only a few places where you actually have to walk on the sand. If you get somewhere that looks like you will have to climb over rocks to get past, just look to your right. Whenever there is an outcropping of rocks, if you look, you will find a footpath that goes up and over to the right. Sometimes there are actually steps and sidewalks past places that at first glance look like there is no way past except over the rocks. We climbed a lot of rocks the first day, but soon saw other people off to the right on the concealed paths. It makes the going much easier, and I actually did it often in dressy sandals and often carrying bags of stuff we bought shopping.
We usually like to go somewhere different each time we travel, and so far we have never been to the same destination twice. However, I think in this case we will make an exception just so we can return to the Quinta Maria Cortez.

  • Liked — The location and the beauty of the inn and the beach
  • Disliked — Steps - 103 from beach to Maximiliano. Older people or people who have difficulty with steps should consider a room on one of lower levels.

The QMC was perfect! We took a cab from the airport right to the QMC travelling down cobble stone streets with beautiful trees and villas surrounding us. Once at the QMC we were greeted by the nicest staff that made us feel right at home. We were given a tour of the property and were amazed by the beauty of each room. We stayed in Guadalupe and it was perfect. The AC worked like a charm, the kitchenette was perfect for our snacks and the few steps to the beach and the sound of the waves all night was wonderful. Some people commented on the beach that it wasn't that great but we found it to be just the opposite...very few people walked by so it felt like our own and the surf was great...We loved the rocks and swimming out past them to look back at the QMC and the beauty that is PV. Oh and you can't forget the breakfast...it was terrific! Each morning we happily rolled out of bed for the great food and perfect view! We hope to go back soon!

  • Liked — The unbelievable charm, close but not too close to town, beach
  • Disliked — No TV in the room...but actually that was really a nice change of pace :)

It's hard to know where to begin reviewing a place like this.. I've never really seen anything like it and couldn't have imagined it would be this pretty. It takes perfect advantage of the beauty PV has to offer, and has such a fantastic take on Mexican culture. While off the beaten path, it's certainly not sitting alone.
The interior design struck me first. The art (described negatively in one review as "gothic") is a fascinating composite, in my opinion, of the Mexican culture. I disagree that it casts a dark shadow (this is a culture, after all, which celebrates the dead!) - to me it was a fun, artful, and sweet commemoration of Mexican past and modern art.
Okay so beyond the fantastic decor is the architecture of the actual place --- we learned that it was a woman's home before bought by the owner of QMC. The joke was that only someone on drugs would have designed such rambling Escher-like stairways and corners, yet (to me) that was possibly the most stunning feature. The first time through it just feels other-worldly.
Our room was at the bottom of the building (it literally is a vertical layout) and we loved it for it's proximity to the beach. In the future I'd like to be higher up in the building to get a more cozy feeling. But there was nothing to fear as they have an on-site security guard at night. If I really had my choice and money was no option, I'd come back with a bunch of my friends and stay in the building next door (same owner), which has 3 giant, stunning suites (bigger than a lot of condos) and on-site chefs. And, honestly, it might be cheaper than it was this time! It's a fantastic deal.

The beach was great - it had a cove feel. It wasn't really swimable because of the giant rocks in the water, but those same rocks provided little safe spots to float or just cool off.
The walk to town was probably my biggest issue. My husband and I are young, athletic and adventurous, but we could see right away that this pathway was only for nimble, daytime hiking. However, a cab ride to and/or from the downtown was exceedingly simple and cheap, at any time of the night.

The two things I'll remember most about PV are the boisterous downtown and the people that live and work there. The staff at QMC are simply fantastic, sweet, and knowledgeable. I truly look forward to a return visit.

I stayed at QMC during a family vacation (no children in our group) and we had a wonderful experience. The 7-room B&B is in the quiet, upscale Conchas Chinas neighborhood on the south end of Puerto Vallarta, and we were thrilled to be staying off the beaten path. As another poster mentioned, we did not feel it was walking distance to the downtown or romantic zone, but this was very much to our liking, as it meant that the beach at QMC had a very tranquil feel. We did enjoy the short (5 minute) walk in the opposite direction, past many small B&Bs and rental villas, to a nearby beach restaurant.

QMC's rooms and public areas are whimsically, eccentrically decorated, and we found them charming. The other guests were all interesting, and the *delicious* breakfast each morning made for great conversation and exchange of tour and daytrip ideas. The staff, and particularly house manager Jose, were gracious and helpful, including helping us search for and retrieve a misplaced item.

I can't recommend QMC enough for travelers looking for a unique, quiet B&B, outside the resort and timeshare scene that makes up much of Puerto Vallarta.

Breezing through the internet one evening I came across pictures of QMC. I instantly fell in love with the room Alejandro, and as luck would have it, it was available for the 4 nights that I wanted it for.

It met all our expectations.. Romanically situated on the ocean with two balconies over looking the sea. it was a fully open concept,...yes no air conditioning..bonus for us. It had a fully equipped kitchen, and a frig with stocked drinks. The bathroom was wonderful with fluffy towels and complimentary bath robes.

The white curtains fluttered with the sea breezes and the fireplaces were lit with several candles to give this room that romantic flare it deserved.

This is not a modern hotel, it is an older villa, and that is why it is so charming. If someone is expecting new, this is definetly not for them. It is the charm of the old mixed with the art and mexican decor, that give this place its ambiance.

The breakfast was excellent, you could not ask for anything better. You could have your choice of anything you wanted. The service was excellent in all areas, and very friendly.

I do hope to return there in the not so distant future.

This property is lovely and quirky, Jose the on-site manager is a pleasure, and the QMC dealt graciously and generously with a scheduling difficulty that arose for us.
