Quinta Maria Cortez

Reviewed May 27, 2013

My husband & I jumped on this living social deal for this quaint B&B. Having only done a resort before in Mexico, we were excited to see this place. The photos on the website do it the justice it deserves - exactly as you see!
We stayed for 5 nights - more than enough time for a quite, restful vacation. Here are some thoughts and tips:
- airport ride is approx. 25 mins ($260 pesos from the airport, only $160 pesos to the airport)
- walk on beach to Old Town Puerto Vallarta is 20 mins; but in the heat, recommend taking a $5 US taxi ($40-$60 pesos, depending on where in Puerto Vallarta you are going)
- staff were excellent: meeting us on arrival, carrying our cases, always friendly and helpful, cleaned to perfection almost daily, breakfast served exactly how we want it, relaxed atmosphere, even nightly security to meet you when you come back from dinner
- Room: we stayed in the top floor (Maximiliano Suite) - OH MY GOODNESS! - what an amazing suite! No bugs, didn't need the air conditioned bedroom, had to adjust to the sound of the waves every night, fridge was stocked with drinks, mosquito coils, candles, stereo (no tv) with ipod connection. The views were spectacular, and the stairs up were not terrible.
- Facilities: pool was definitely small (which we knew before arriving), but with so few people staying in the villa, you can get the quick dip you need to cool off, or head down to your lounger by the ocean. Rooftop terrace was a highlight, both at night and during the afternoon - great spot for a drink and reading.

There is one restaurant that is a 10 minute walk on the beach, that you can easily get to without a taxi. Not the best food, but the best location for a sunset.
There are no vendors, time share people or anything 'touristy' on the beach, or close to the B&B - which is EXCELLENT!

It is an older building, so if you like modern/contemporary, then this is not for you. If you like rustic, original lavish furnishings, then this is the place for you.

If you like the 'all-inclusive' feel of a resort, this is not for you. At Quinta Maria Cortez, it feels like a home, so you don't have this urge to have to go out and do all these excursions, or to escape the resort.

We personally liked the flexibility of exploring the town and going in for dinner without the sheltered out of the way life of resorts.

We'll be back!

Room Tip: I would recommend any of the top three suites for accessibility, views and space; but read the websi...

My husband and I have been going to Quinta for the past 5 years and when we leave, we are already looking forward to our next trip. When we arrive from the hotel, Roberto or Jose are in the street to greet us, and we are always warmly welcomed back by the entire staff team -- who take such good care of us during our 2 week stay. We love our room, which looks out onto a private beach and Banderas Bay. We feel completely safe there as we do when we walk into town for dinner (or walk around town). The breakfast are FABULOUS. So much variety, you could have something different every morning. Counting the weeks until we go back again!

Room Tip: I love all the rooms and would stay in any of them except for -- Jessica (no balcony), although our...

My husband and I spent 7 nights in the Alejandro suite over Easter week. While the main beach and Old Town PV were crowded shoulder-to-shoulder with tourists due to the holidays, the Quinta Maria Cortez was an intimate oasis of privacy and luxury.

I could write an essay on why this will be the only place we will ever stay in Puerto Vallarta, but the main points are:

1. First rate staff - Everyone on staff had a smile and a friendly greeting; our room was made up first thing in the morning while we were at breakfast so we always returned to a spotless room; the manager Jose and the houseman Roberto gave excellent restaurant recommendations and Jose even made a couple reservations for us; when we expressed our intent to visit Quinta Maria again, we were taken on a tour of several vacant rooms so that we could decide which would be the best for our needs

2. Unique and beautiful decor - Our large room was completely open-air with 2 lovely balconies overlooking the beach. Our bathroom was huge, we had a full kitchen with a bar and barstools, as well as a daybed and small dining table. The entire property was decorated in a traditional Mexican hacienda style, which made it feel like we were staying at a private home rather than a bed & breakfast. The rustic design may not appeal to those who prefer modern "chain hotel-style" amenities, but the historic authenticity was right up our alley.

3. Attention to detail- Every time I thought of something I needed or would've been nice to have, I noticed it was already there (ex: lighters to light the candles, portable fans, hairdryer, bottled water, icetrays, pots and pans and utensils, bugspray and mosquito coils, mosquito netting around the bed, bathrobes, even a cd in the cd player and the radio preset to the best local radio station!)

4. Breakfast - Served every day exc Sunday from 9-10. The cook, Ines, prepared wonderful large breakfasts starting with fresh fruit, granola and yogurt, and then we had our choice of several main entrees. The view of the ocean from the dining area was incredible. There was no need or desire to look elsewhere for breakfast.

5. Location- The beach was wonderfully private, and although publically accessible, was secluded enough that there was hardly anyone on the beach while we were there. We never had to wait for lounge chairs, which were set up every morning with fresh towels. The malecon and old town were a very easy walk along the beach and we made the trip to town every day. We enjoyed the convenience of being able to walk to "the action" while being able to return to solitude.

6. The only downside for us is that children are not allowed. We had hoped to return as a family. But perhaps it will just have to remain our own couple's getaway. We'll have to search for alternate accomodations in the same area when we want to return with the kids. Chances are, we won't find anywhere we'll like as much as the Quinta Maria Cortez.

Room Tip: If A/C is important to you, make sure you request it at the time of reservations.

If you are looking for a place to stay that is eclectic, romantic, and feels like your own place, look no farther! On the best beach in PV, "Conchas Chinas", and within walking distance to downtown. Well appointed open air rooms, with living rooms, kitchenettes, and some with full kitchens. We have stayed at Quinta annually for the last 10 years and love it. Every time we step out of the taxi when we arrive, we really feel like we have arrived home. The staff are like family, Jose, Julian, Roberto, Ricardo, and Edwardo to name a few. The same employees for the past 10 years, that says a lot about the care the employers have for there staff and for the great job the staff does. They make sure your stay is like no other. If you need a car, supplies from the store for your stay they can arrange that for you. Margret and JJ the owners have created a special place that makes everyone feel welcome and comfortable, and are constantly maintaining, and improving this lovely B&B.

You better book in advance because Quinta books up a year in advance.

Room Tip: Be sure to check out photos of each room as they are all eclectically unique, something for everyone...

We stayed in Puerto Vallarta for weeks this winter. We stayed at the Quinta Maria Cortez for the last 3 nights of our vacation. It is located in the conchas chinas area. It is a beautiful hacienda -like B and B. The views are fabulous, the beaches nice and it is a very relaxing place. The service is excellent as are the breakfasts. They do not serve breakfast on Sundays however. If there is any drawback to staying here is that you really need to take a taxi when going into town for dinner in the evening. You can walk into town along the beach in about 20 minutes to "old town". We really enjoyed our days here and it was a great ending to a fantastic vacation. I can't say enough about how wonderful PV and its people are. We have been going tfor 18 winters.

My wife and I just returned from our second stay at the Quinta Maria Cortez, 10 years to the day after our first, and it remains as special to us as ever. There's just something about the QMC that is so unique, so timeless, and so soulful. The architecture of the hotel is ever-changing and endlessly fascinating, but always true to it's origins as classic, cliffside Mexican villa. And it's furnishings have been chosen with such an expert eye that everything feels perfectly harmonious. But most of all, the QMC needs to be applauded for it's fantastic staff, nearly all of whom have been there for years. We can't say enough about their courtesy, friendliness, and professionalism. One more thing: True Story - I forgot my cell phone in the taxi on the way to our airport departure. Imagine by distress when I realized my mistake! But by the time I called, the taxi driver had already returned it safe and sound to the QMC office. I think that speaks to not only the respect that the staff and management garner in their community, but also to the good people of Puerto Vallarta and Mexico in general. To all of you contemplating a trip to Mexico, and particularly the Quinta Maria Cortez, you won't be disappointed. It remains a forever a magical place.

We wanted to find a comfortable and quiet place right in the beach, and we succeeded! Quinta Maria Cortez is a lovely, small, old-school place with extraordinary views, great accommodations, and a wonderful staff. We've been sleeping (in our open-to-the-air) room with the sounds of the surf not 30 yards away, relaxing at the pool and on the beach, and strolling into town for food and sightseeing. If you're looking for an all-inclusive that caters to your every whim, this probably isn't the place...but if you want beauty and simplicity and a great breakfast, I think you'd like this as much as we do!

Room Tip: Can't go wrong!
