“Had a great time.”
Reviewed March 3, 2005

We were there Feb 9-16th of 2005. The place had had a lot of improvements made since 2003. They now have a full sized bathtub along with all the ammenities we are used to seeing in the US, ie., Hair dryer, coffee maker and makeup mirror. We received two waters each day from the maid, some of the comments on this subject made it seem that getting bottled water was tough. It's not. I drank the water right out of the tap with no ill effects. They do purify the water and it does not stink of chlorine. This hotel is right next to the Marina where many of the excursions leave so that's quite handy. The other reviews we read about the French, Italian and Japanese restaraunts is right on. The french is outstanding, the Italian so-so and don't even bother with the Japanese. The beds are extremely hard and shorter than normal. I am 6' 2" and had to lay corner to corner on it and still hung over a little. I had 5 pillows brought to the room and layed on them to soften it up. We were very happy with the hotel and the price we paid and will go back, but will demand a queen size bed next time!

My partner and I just returned from a 3 night stay at the Crown Paradise Club. It was my second time there and just as wonderful as my first visit last year.

We can say nothing but wonderful things about this place. The staff is so very friendly and helpful. The food is great - especially Salvador's (make sure to have the Sexy Coffee) - but the snack bar by the pool has great tacos as well as other stuff. There was also an Empanda station, a pasta station, numerous grilled snacks to enjoy. The tiki bar around the corner in front of the ocean front units has great sandwiches and even sushi!

We were made to feel as part of their family. We had a ceramic tile hung by our door that said Casa Speer...a simple gesture that made us feel special. We don't understand complaints about how terrible it is to HAVE to walk to the towel hut to make a dinner reservation for the fine dining venues...or to complain about there being a tip jar on the bar. Yes this is an all inclusive resort but it seems that a $1 here or there that is SO appreciated by the staff shouldn't be a problem.

Please remember if you're considering staying here there will always be someone to complain about some little thing. If you can get past that and aren't a completely uptight person yourself you will enjoy yourselves.

We'd like to give a big thank you to everyone at the hotel but especially Ramirez and Sol (pool bar wait staff), Danny (activities), Arturo (The Pub bar), for their exceptional attitudes and service. Hello also to Gary and Judy from Vancouver Island and their family. You all are a hoot and we really enjoyed hanging out with you.

I've read reviews on this hotel that said that it caters to the 40 and up crowd. I agree. But that's not a bad thing. We are in our mid-20's and we still had a nice and relaxing time. A real "party scene" would have been fun, but wouldn't that get old after a few days?

They did have several activities during each day that included things like water aerobics, and wind-surf lessons. Let me warn you, if you don't like getting all "touchy feely" with strangers, don't participate in the water aerobics. It starts out with simple exercises, but ends up in this circle of holding hands, and then hands on the shoulders, and then much closer! Way too much "togetherness" for me! I was wierded out by it and swam away. But everyone else seemed to be enjoying it.

The activity directors are very enthusiastic. But not too anoying. They work very hard, I think harder than any of the employees there! You'll see them in the morning working out in the Gym (which, it turns out is required to keep their jobs), and then during the whole day they'll be encouraging people to participate in this and that, and then they keep working late into the night putting on the shows over at the disco. It's no wonder that they are all in shape and beautiful! We were too sleepy every night to make it to any of the shows, but everyone said that they were great.

A few tips: If you want to hang out around the pool all day in comfort, get up early (like, before 9am), and lay some towels on the lounges by the hedge that borders another resort next door. The temp there has to be at least 10 degrees lower. There are umbrellas around the pool, but the really don't offer that much shade.

And another: I know that they say that there is "no tipping allowed". But I don't think they take it as seriously here than they do at other resorts where they say the same. There's even a tip jar at the pool bar! I don't think you defiantly need to tip to get good service tho. Everyone around the pool got waited on just as fast as us, even tho we thru a tip to the girl that was delivering drinks every now and then. But, when we tipped the bartender once, only once (and I mean only a dollar!) the drinks from then on were superb! Although the drinks were nice before we did that. And this especially applies to room service. They are defiantly on "Mexico time" when it comes to delivering it. The first time we ordered room service, it actually took 2 hours!! But we tipped him anyway, a dollar, and the next time we ordered it took 20-30 minutes to arrive! This may annoy some, but think, they do not earn very much money down there, and a dollar here and there wont kill us! By the way, their burgers are yummy off the room service menu. And you have to try the shrimp stir-fry off the room service menu, excellent! But know that anywhere in the resort, the milk is instant milk, not real milk.

The restaurants are excellent. And the food is excellent. You must make a reservation at Salvador's. It's a bit of a bummer that you have to walk almost to the beach to make the reservation, but you will not be disappointed with the food. When you get there, order the "sexy coffee", a show in itself, and very good. And make sure to try the restaurants in the "sister resort" next door. It is called Crown Paradise CLUB, the side that allows children. There are some very good restaurants over there as well.

Another tip: When you book you trip here, book it as a special occasion of some sort (birthday, wedding, anniversary, etc.). You will get bumped up to the best room that they have at no extra charge. Usually including a mini-kitchen, ocean view and hot-tub.

Over-all we had a great time. The place is small, and if you are looking for a non-stop party, don't bother going here. But where they lack in size they make up in service, quality, and relaxation.

We booked this resort, because of our last year holiday in Cancun. We stayed at The Crown Paradise in Cancun. Because we are travelling adults without children we had the option to "stay at one and play at two" so my husband and I shuttled daily to the Golden Crown Paradise the adult sister property for a few hours during each day. None the less both properties were specatular in Cancun. Neither property in Puerto Vallarta came even close to Cancun. Not in rooms, service, food, nor ammenities. It is not that our expectations were too high, we have travelled throught Mexico and other areas for 25 years and know what to expect. You do not give a property a 4 1/2 star rating and have holes in the sheets: have the maid take all the towels from the room at 9 am and not replinish with clean ones until 5pm. Leave me my towels, I dont mind using them again during the day until the clean ones are ready. Booking for dinner was a nighmare, having to stand in line is absurd. There should be some system in place where a simple phone call from the your room can take care of a dinner booking. It worked in Cancun, why not here. We had a suite overlooking the pool, bad idea. The noise level until midnight is for the most part very loud. The throught the night, people who decide to wander the pool area kept everyone else awake. For the most part the staff were friendly and helpful. One of my major complaints here is the tipping issue. There was NONE of this in Cancun. Nowhere was there a glass on the bar with American dollar bills in it, obvioulsy for tips. All were treated the same in Cancun. Being Canadian, at an all inclusive, we did not bring that many American dollars , and I resented the idea of feeling obliged. We met with a Canadian couple who had stayed at this property last year and they had noticed the change this year. I read in one review from here,"this is a 3 star trying very hard to be a 5 star" very very well said!!!

The Crown Paradise Club is good! Erik at the swimup bar is the best! Ask about the guys from Minnesota who did the Tequila Poppers. The location is great (nice beach)! Great beach volleyball. There is a really really good restaurant downtown called Celia Palos! Ask Diego at the front lobby for details and directions. Very good authentic Mexican food! We went on the pirate ship and the bar crawl. Pirate ship good.. bar crawl ok. We met a guy by the name of Victor at a bar downtown and he brought us around to other bars for cocktails and music. Our room only had hot water 1 day out of 7. I told the front desk four times to fix... they never did. Our friends did not have water all the time. Our patio door did not lock and it was never fixed. FYI -If you do not leave the maid a tip - she does not give you new towels. The Jap restaurant is not very good! French and Italian is ok. GECKOS EVERYWHERE... Some friends we met from St. Paul, MN had a Gecko on her leg when she woke up. Crazy huh! Great place for cocktails and meeting people from Minnesota and Canada. Had a blast! Watch out for water polo you might get hit the face. Ask for the drink "Oasis" its great! MAKE SURE YOU ASK DIEGO ABOUT PLACES TO EAT! Some of our friends came back to their room after cocktails and found fake spiders on the floor... joke?? We are assuming!

All in all, its still a great place!

We visited this property Feb 5 to Feb 12/05.

This hotel is a smaller (approx 150 rooms), well-kept, adults only, near the cruise ship dock and wal-mart (approx 5-10 min walk). Not to be confused with the sister property next door, the crown paradise club which is a family resort next door and was formerly the club playa d'ore.

Our room was 1620 and called casa chalmers. It was a 1 bedroom suite on the 6th floor (of eight) with 2 single beds, fridge, stove, dining room table and sitting area with TV. This room(suite) is unusuall as most rooms are bedrooms only. But we asked for a room with an adjoining room for our parents (1621). Our room was at the back of the resort, square on overlooking the pool. All rooms are ocean view, with one wing being ocean front. Everything worked fine, maid service was fine.

The food was quite good. There is not a buffet (small one for breakfast), and all meals are a la carte. The menus do change a bit, and do not be afraid to try to order off menu. We ordered club sandwiches, and cheesburgers for lunch when it did not show on the menu. For dinner there is Salvadores and Paradise. They are both fine dining menus and similar. You book dinner at the activities center on the beach. The other restaurant (Bellavista) is where you usually eat breakfast and lunch in the courtyard. It is also open for dinner and no reservation is required at any time. You are also allowed to use all the facilities next door at the crown paradise club next door including the restaurants. There is three fine dining restaurants (Japanese, Italian, French) which we did not try, and also a buffet which we did the first night. We did not like it. Was limited and not to our liking. Also whenever you use things you must also sign for it. Not a big deal but do not be surprised.

There are acitivities in this resort but it did not appear to be a focal point ot it. They did have daily water volley ball game, water polo, or basket ball games, water aerobics, etc..

This resort skewed to the older crowd and was not a party place but they do have a disco across the street(drinks included in your package), which also has the shows at 9:30pm. Did not go and so cannot tell you what they are like.

The pool is heated and is very warm.

You get to watch the cruise ships. Close to town, wal-mart, and for me they sell the usa today on the resort and also at 2 corner stores nearby.

If you want to go to town it is about 5 pesos on the local bus which you can catch across from wal mart and the airport is close and will cost 40 pesos (be careful of the price quoted by the cabbies especially at the airport) as it is only 5 min from the airport.

Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and would return to this resort. The weather was excellent, the staff was nice, and the pace was laid back.

I did not add the usual about the flight or airport as I think you are wanting to know about the resort.

I don't know where to begin, but beware there is the Crown Paradise and Golden Crown which trip adviser has on the same review, but different hotels. The family rooms are a joke, kids room the size of a closet. The balcony was 2 fet by two feet! If you are going with children go to a resort that offers more space and a couch so you can have room to move. We changed to a standard room and our bathroom smelt like sewage. And I don't believe there are any non smoking rooms. The food is disgusting, no variety, except the Italian, but be ready to line up at 9a.m. to book reservations. No fridege, no remote for the tv, hard beds, top quilt on bed gross, old. I heard the Holiday Inn has been renovates nicely. Villa Del Palmar was nice, just don't stay here. I read reviews and was okay to stay here and thought it would be okay as it was a five star. No young family was happy with this resort and people were constantly at the desk complaining.
