“Great Week”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

Stayed one week starting March 16 at this lovely hotel. Spacious, well appointed room, balcony, great shower and spotlessly clean. Very good food, lots of fresh fruit and variety in Quetsal buffet, both for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Palapa also very good. The Italian was our least favorite, although presentation and service was good. Mexican resto good. The staff at all the restos and bars are very anxious to please and work very hard. (Please tip them). Resort & beach area kept perfectly. Only drawback to this vacation was SUNWING who we flew with. They were 1 1/2 hours late leaving Wpg. (baggage mixup) and upon return found they had ripped two tabs off my luggage. When I called them (took 4 calls before returning my call they said "sorry we're not liable," click. I almost always fly with WestJet and this is first and last time with Sunwing, they do not care.

Room Tip: Stayed in tower 1 on 7th floor, "deluxe ocean view, nice view of ocean, resort & shoreline.

A 25 yr resort ....great location close to airport
Staff is great ....awesome service .
Good variety of food and the bar drinks were too good.
at first we thought it was a bit tired. but the staff in the resort have made the effort to make it a great resort.
We enjoy the nightly performances.
It was a fun place to be at.
Great location: close to the marina close to Walmart really close to the airport

We spent March break at the Melia with our three and our five year old. We enjoyed our week. Good food with lots of options at the buffets. The hotel was clean and staff were warm and timely with everything. The beach was clean and the hotel was not busy so you could always get a spot by the pool or the beach. We had a kids and co. room with a bunk for the kids - which they loved and they enjoyed spending time at the playground. We did a few of the crafts at the kids programs and our younger son enjoyed spending time at the daycare. The envening entertainment was great - a very talented group of performers. Our kids liked to take part in the nightly mini-disco as well - although it did start later than we like at 9:00 pm. Weather was gorgeous and the marina across the street from the hotel was a short walk and a fun place to visit.
Spring break was going on full swing beside us with loud music between 11am and 5pm. But other than the music it didnt impact our stay.
The hotel said it was non-smoking but they didn't enforce it.

16 of us from MN went down to Puerto Vallarta and had the best time! We are middle class younger people and we wanted a nice place at a reasonable price. This place was perfect. We enjoyed the pool and the beach everyday. The staff was awesome. We were not bothered with the sales people for timeshares at all. The view is probably one of the best views I've ever seen in Mexico. I would definitely go back again. It was perfect!

We arrived at the hotel and were provided with a garden view room. The room layout was nice but the couch had big stains on it. We went back to the desk and were moved to an ocean view for no charge.
This room had a great view but the same date furniture just cleaner. Our safe would not open and it took several staff and three days to resolve the issue. There was no alarm or coffee maker in the room. When we asked we were given a coffee maker. However, despite tipping the cleaning staff did not leave coffee supplies, clean the maker or leave cups.

We used the free lobby internet but it was not reliable.

The overall resort is beautiful but needs an complete update. Some staff are fantastic and others don't seem to care. Frequently our drinks were not what we had ordered.

The food was good no concerns and great variety. We made reservations for the two restaurants. The italian was the best by far but no shorts guys or you won't get it.

We enjoyed yoga and acquasices daily and this was great.

We also had massage while we were there and this was great too-one of the best.

Unfortunatley, the Westin next door had kids in for Spring Break. The music was extremely loud and the kids kept comng over onto the beach in front of our resort. As a result one of the one shore dining areas was moved. We complained numerous times about the noise-you could hear it in your room. The desk said management would call the Westin but the result was nothing was done. This made the overall experience difficult to enjoy.

This could be a great little resort is it was updated and staff standards were raised as well as consistent services. However, the value for the money is not there given the rates they are charging.

We stayed for 2 weeks in mid-December. Our ROOM was clean and comfortable. The garden view was great because it looked over the garden to the ocean. The beds were fine - but the pillows were lumpy. We found the staff to be lovely and helpful. I've lost the book I wrote his name in (sorry) - the front of house - taxi guy was wonderful - good humoured, helpful and thoughtful. Generally, the FOOD was good. My partner is a vegetarian (no eggs or fish) - he was able to have a variety to chose from at all meals. There was one particular evening (last dinner) where we wondered if there was some kind of serious kitchen staff/management problem. This was, however, the exception. Dining areas were generally well maintained - though the lunch buffet area by the pool - the giant urn statues in the middle - need a good scrub. Actually, this was the case for a few places like spots under some door handles, bases of tables, for example. Yes, it's picky - but it would also help the resort to not look 'tired'. Which it does. POOL area - the cushions and many of the chaise lounges need replacing. The cushions are showing wear and tear - and several of the lounges were broken. Enough so, that it became a challenge to find usable ones, if you arrived during busy times. That said, we really appreciated how large the pool was - we could be in there - with lots o other folks - and still have a ton of personal space. The location of the resort: about 15 minute taxi ride to PV. We went into town every couple of days. I have no problem with staying at a 3 star place if that's what I pay for and chose. This is not a 4 star, as it is listed. I would go back - but likely will not, for no other reason than the world is big and there are other places to try out - and this one, while a good holiday, was not exceptional. Not the staff's fault rather the management - invest some pesos and upgrade and update.

Good value and good service with mildly underkept but perfectly acceptable facilities. Melia really hit the spot for a couple of chilly Canadians on a budget.

We loved the short trip from the airport(less than 10 minutes door-to-door). The huge, open, airy lounge was delightful when we arrived and was always a nice spot to hang while using with the free wifi. The room was par for the course and well kept by the housekeeping staff. The quiet lounging atmosphere was much more to our liking than the constant thumping party next door(we could hear them but it didn't bother us). The layout was good. I've read some people complaining about the sprawling grounds but I have no idea why. It was perfectly well-spaced and we certainly didn't mind the short walks to help combat the calories from the buffet and the margaritas. There was entertainment every night but we never went. Some have complained about the volume from the entrainment but we had no issues.

This isn't a luxury resort but it was still pretty good….just know what you're getting into. The mattress was kinda hard and the pillows a little lumpy but we slept just fine. The shower was borderline too high-pressured but if you just turn the taps on just a smidge, you get more than enough pressure. The pool was missing a few tiles but it was large and clean and wet. We spent a lot of time reading and relaxing there. We also played a lot of pool and ping pong. The pool cues were a little crooked and after sinking one in the side pocket, the pocket fell right out. We reported this(twice) and later saw it was been replaced but not repaired(twice). The pocket fell right out because it was only balanced in the pocket but not secured. So, we played on the second table, no big deal. Of course, it's hard to be too upset about any of this when the weather is so great, the drinks are included, and the staff is nice and polite and helpful and fluent in English. Bottom-line: if you're picky, there's plenty to pick on, but, if you're easy-going, you'll do just fine.

The food was perfectly serviceable but somewhat challenging for us as vegetarians. The biggest problem was that many dishes had superfluous meat in them(bacon in the green beans or mashed potatoes, ham in the scrambled eggs, etc). There were a dozen ways to eat meat at every meal so this was completely unnecessary and a little frustrating. There wasn't a single tofu or Indian dish all week(usually staples of buffets with veggie options) and the snack shack didn't offer veggie burgers. The buffets had decent size and variety but vegetarian protein was often in short supply. Breakfast was always great but they sadly started adding chicken to the chilaquiles halfway through the week(but the omlette line was always short and the quesdillas and refried beans were delicious). Lunch was almost always pasta with cream sauce and parmesan for protein or pizza which was fine but got a little tiresome(lots of meat options though). We had a couple of dinners of mixed vegetables and rice, bread, or potatoes, with beans of cheese from the salad bar for protein. Not the most exciting for veggies but meat eaters will do fine. Vegans beware, you will not do well here.

Tips
1. Take the bus downtown. It's super cheap(7.50 pesos) and takes you right downtown. Takes 15+ minutes. The driver will make change for you too.
2. Tip the bartenders and housekeeping staff. They work hard, it's cheap for you, and it'll probably earn you a stiffer bourbon and coke or some frills in your room.
3. A cocktail and popcorn(a brilliant bar snack) at the lobby bar makes for a nice pre-dinner routine.
4. They're going to try to sell you a timeshare. It's their job so just be nice and keep on walking through the lobby if you're not interested. We got asked 3-4 times. They did offer a heavily discounted couples massage and city tour if we did the 90 minute breakfast presentation. We skipped it but it's up to you.
